Win a £50 CEWE Photoworld photo book voucher

I take hundreds of photos on my travels, and I’m always trying improve my photography skills. Three years ago I bought myself a DSLR and went on a photography course at my local adult education centre, but the lessons were far too complicated for me. Last January I signed up for a year-long online photography course, but I only managed to keep up with it for a couple of months. I think that I’ve learnt the most about photography by going to sessions at blogger conferences, where helpful people such Instagrammer Kim Leuenberger and blogger Abigail King have shared their tips. I still can’t use my DSLR properly, and I’m always on the lookout for ways to improve my photography.

CEWE Photoworld have produced this infographic showing ten of the most Instagrammed landmarks in the world, and it includes some very helpful tips on how to take better photos. If you click on the image it will show you the ten landmarks and their accompanying tips.

CEWE infographic

How to take better photos of landmarks

Here are five simple photography tips which I’ve found very helpful, whatever kind of camera I’m using. Please do let me know if you have any other easy tips to add to the list.

  1. Use the Rule of Thirds. In case you haven’t heard of this rule, I’ll explain it. Imagine that your picture contains two horizontal and two vertical lines, equally spaced across it. These lines divide the image into nine sections. Pictures work better if items of interest are positioned along these lines, or where they intersect.
  2. Change your perspective – don’t just take the obvious shot. See if you can take your photo from a different angle – from low down, or up high, or from the side. Experiment with different points of view to find the best shot.
  3. Focus on the detail. If you want something different from a postcard shot, you can get great photos of famous landmarks if you focus in on  interesting  details.
  4. If you take photos at dawn or dusk, the soft light makes for much better images than you see in the middle of the day.
  5. Avoid the crowds if you can – get to places early in the morning to capture images without crowds of people.

Win a £50 photo book voucher

Once you’ve taken some images which you’re happy with, it’s great to put them into a photo book. If you’d like to create a photo book it’s worth looking at the CEWE website. CEWE Photoworld is Europe’s top photo company and the the CEWE photo book has been voted the UK’s best. CEWE are offering a £50 photo book voucher for one Mums do travel reader.

I think the Eiffel Tower, Paris – just because of it’s romantic image and the fact that it is so different and would present certain photographic challenges.

I wish I had a camera that could be used in the water because that moment was so perfect and beautiful. It would have been so lovely to capture it. On a plus I am very lucky that I got to experience that.
