This is a weekly Linky to share ideas for family days out.
Last week I dropped my kids off for the first day of the new school term and then went skiing – at the Hemel Hempstead Snow Centre. I’d been invited there for the launch of Go Ski Go Board, a national campaign to get more people into snow sports ahead of the Winter Olympics in Russia.
I ski very badly and am heavily dependent on a move known as the snow plough. This allows me to ski slowly, which I like. I learnt with friends when we were teaching English in Italy. We used to go to the mountains at weekends, hire some skis and go for it. Without helmets, because nobody wore helmets in those days. I never really liked it that much. Then earlier this year I skied for a day on a trip to Madesimo in Italy and really enjoyed it. So I was happy to take up the offer of a Go Ski Go Board beginners lesson at the Snow Centre. This is me (on the left) learning how to ski with one ski at the start of the lesson:
The Go Ski Go Board campaign offers value for money ski and snowboard sessions at a network of the UK’s indoor and artificial snow slopes. The scheme is run by the sport’s national governing body Snowsport England and is being supported by the Tirol Tourist Board, who are keen to encourage more visitors to their slopes. I really enjoyed the lesson and am thinking about going back with the rest of the family. The price of the sessions start from £5 including the hire of equipment, jackets and salopettes so it sounds like very good value.

If you don’t fancy skiing or snowboarding for a family day out, how about something cultural? This is the annual Heritage Open Days weekend when thousands of free events are organised across the country to celebrate our architecture and culture. Check out the website to see what’s happening near you.
