POP BOOK photobooks

In the days before digital cameras I would send my films away to be developed and then I’d wait for the resulting photos to be delivered back to me by post. When the 24 or 36 prints arrived it was always very exciting to see how they had turned out and to show them to my family and friends.

These days I take so many photos that although I share some of them on this website and on social media I never print any of them and very rarely look at them with my friends and family. So when I was invited to review the POP BOOK app I thought that it would be a good chance to share my photos like I used to do.

POP BOOK app

POP BOOK is a free iOS app (there’s an Android version coming soon) that lets you select, edit and arrange a photobook using your Instagram, Facebook and iPhone photos. You can order a  printed version of your photobook for £4.99 or share the link online for free. The app works on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch as long as you have iOS 6.0 or later.

I downloaded the POP BOOK app to my iPad and decided to make a photobook of our trip to Sicily last summer. Choosing which images to include in the book was the hardest part of creating my POP BOOK. The photos from our Sicily trip were no longer on my iPhone or iPad as I take so many pictures that I store them on an external hard drive. I used my laptop to choose which photos to include in the photobook and then shared them to iCloud so that I could access them from my iPad to make a POP BOOK.

I found the POP BOOK app itself easy to install and to use. After selecting the 21 photos which you’d like to use you just click ‘Create your POP book’. You can then adjust the order of the photos, choose between black or white photo borders (I opted for white), crop individual images and add filters and text if you want to. I had actually edited my photos already in iPhoto and so didn’t need to do much more to them. Once you’re happy with your creation you just register with your email address and password so that you can share the book online or order a printed version.

The website says that delivery takes up to seven days. I ordered my book on a Thursday morning and I was surprised when the postman delivered the finished book to me the following Monday. The book is 13cm x 13cm square and would easily fit in to my handbag. You can also opt for a 10cm x 10cm version which would probably fit in to a pocket. The colours of the photos in my book look good and it’s printed on thick, high quality photo paper. I didn’t add any text to my photos when I created the book but now I think that I should have done. The book would look better with some captions or at the very least an indication of when and where the photos were taken.

Verdict

I’ve enjoyed looking at the book and it’s a lovely memento of our family holiday in Sicily. I think that I’ll definitely try to print out more photos like this in future to remind me of our travels and also for special occasions – and next time I’ll definitely include some captions.

Lowdown

If you’d like to print a POP BOOK of some of your photos you can do so by downloading the POP BOOK app here.

Love the idea of an app – I’ve tried a few similar ones online but this sounds really simple. Hope they bring the Android version out soon.

I prefer photobooks to albums now as they are far less bulky. Will check them out after our holiday in May
