Greek island hopping with kids: the lowdown

Journalist and travel writer Lorenza Bacino went island hopping in Greece with her husband and young children last summer. They travelled by boat between islands and rented rooms from locals. Lorenza wrote a lovely article about their trip for Mums do travel when she got back – you can read it here.

I wanted to find out more about their experience so I met up with Lorenza in London to talk about it. This is what she told me:

I think that island hopping in Greece sounds like a great family holiday and it’s also an inexpensive way to have a summer trip abroad with kids. I was interested to hear that Lorenza’s trip started in Athens. We were there last October and we really enjoyed exploring the Greek capital and meeting the locals. It wasn’t hot enough to go to the beach though so we didn’t think of island hopping. I wonder if there’s a time of year when the temperature would be good for enjoying both the city and the islands?

Have you ever been on an island hopping trip like this with your kids? If so, how was it? If not, is it something that you’d like to do?

I love the greek islands, but have only visited them one at a time rather than hopping – sounds like a great way to make sure you see plenty!

I love the idea of island hopping – it’s such a great way to see different places. I’ve never been to any of the Greek islands…

Wow it really sounds amazing, not sure I’m confident enough to make such a trip though as I like my home comforts. Not sure I could stay in other peoples homes. I wish I was a little more experimental, maybe I will take some inspiration from you and try 🙂

We’ve never been island hopping or to Greece which is really awful!! But we are going to Crete this summer and really looking forward to it. I’m sure Lorenza could give us some tips…

I love the idea of island hopping and I’d love to do it in Scotland (although the Greek weather is more appealing). Closest I’ve got is cruising in the Caribbean.
