This shore excursion from La Spezia to Pisa and Cinque Terre offers a well-rounded taste of both history and natural beauty. While it’s not a private, all-day deep dive into each location, it strikes a practical balance for cruise travelers wanting a snapshot of iconic sights.

What we particularly appreciate about this experience is how it combines the must-see Leaning Tower of Pisa with the charm of one of Italy’s most picturesque coastal villages, Manarola. Plus, you get the convenience of a guided tour that guarantees you’ll be back to your ship on time.

On the flip side, the tour is quite structured, which might leave some looking for more time to explore independently or to relax at the beach.

Departure from La Spezia

The day kicks off right outside the cruise terminal, where your guide, easily identifiable in a green T-shirt, welcomes you. From there, the bus ride to Pisa takes about an hour, giving you time to settle in and get some initial commentary about the region. It’s a comfortable setup, and the transport is generally well-regarded in reviews for being smooth and cool, especially in warmer months.

Exploring Pisa: The Iconic Leaning Tower and More

Once in Pisa, you’ll get about three hours to enjoy the highlights of the city. The primary attraction is, of course, the Piazza dei Miracoli, home to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, a true marvel of architecture that draws millions of visitors. Many travelers love the photo opportunities here, whether you’re climbing the tower or simply snapping shots of the tower’s famous tilt.

The tour offers an optional climb to the top of the Leaning Tower, which is a highlight for many. If you choose this, you get priority access—a big plus during busy seasons—plus entry to the cathedral. Keep in mind, children under 8 are not allowed to climb the tower, so this might affect families traveling with young kids.

Federico was our tour lead and led us to a fantastic day in Pisa and Cinque Terre. We had enough time to explore both cities and loved the commentary given by Federico. Highly recommend this tour! Easy pick up from the cruise terminal!

I made a stupid mistake with the time and we missed the departure of this tour from the cruise terminal. But we were able to catch the train to Pisa, and after contacting the tour office we were able to rendevous with our guide there. Unfortunately, there was a thunderstorm and downpour the day we were there, and because of the lightning they had closed the Pisa Tower. Our tour price included tickets to the tower, but since we couldn't access it the tour operator refunded the ticket price to us. Cinque Terre is really gorgeous, well worth seeing. Be advised, though, that the bus cannot go right down to the city – there is a 20-30 minute walk down a pedestrian-only street with a fairly steep …

Martine was super helpful and we had a great day at Pisa & Cinque Terre.

Beyond the main square, some options allow you to explore other parts of Pisa. As one reviewer put it, guides can also take you to hidden treasures like Piazza dei Cavalieri, the birthplace of Galileo, or the lively Vettovaglie market, which adds some local flavor to your visit.

The Journey to Manarola

After Pisa, the bus heads toward Manarola, one of the smallest and most picturesque villages of the Cinque Terre. The ride is roughly an hour and a half—a good time to relax, enjoy the scenery, and listen to your guide’s commentary. Once there, you’ll have around two hours to explore.

Discovering Manarola

This tiny fishing village is famous for its colorful houses and dramatic setting on a hillside overlooking the sea. You can stroll its narrow streets, snap photos of the vibrant facades, or relax at a seaside café. Remember to bring your swimsuit if you want to take advantage of the crystal-clear waters—many reviews mention enjoying a quick dip in the Mediterranean.

Some travelers expressed that more time in Cinque Terre would be preferable, especially for swimming or shopping. The limited window means you have to prioritize, but many agree that the scenery alone makes it worthwhile. There’s also the option to sample local specialties like Pesto and focaccia in small shops, which is often a highlight.

Amazing day trip ! Marina was a gem to have explaining things in the bus and was very clear with her instructions. Super kind and helpful member of staff. Bus driver George was also very helpful and punctual. Did feel like 2.5-3 hours in pisa was a bit long since we only had 2 hours in manarola and we had to spend some of it to walk 20-25 mins downhill and 25/30 back up from the panoramic sea view point. Would’ve liked more time there than Pisa to swim a bit longer ! Would recommend and would do this again!

Frederico, our guide was great! He explained much about the areas we were visiting and driving through while on the bus. Wish we could’ve had more time in Cinque Terra but not enough time in the day. The amount of time in pisa was perfect for lunch, visiting the cathedral and going in the tower. Great day!
Daniel
Everything went as planned. very easy to find after you come out the cruise terminal. My suggestion is to have 1 less hour in Pisa and add 1 more hour to Cinque Terre

Return to La Spezia

The bus departs Manarola after your free time, heading back to La Spezia in about 40 minutes. The tour guarantees you’ll be back in time for your cruise, which is crucial if you have tight schedules or flights afterward.

Other than the weather that is beyond our control, it was an amazing trip!!

Pisa was good, but I would have preferred a shorted time in Pisa and longer in Cinque Terre, which was beautiful. A very enjoyable tour, worth doing!
Olivia
Enjoyed Pisa and cinque terre. Our guide Martina and driver Seminiano are very friendly. Martins is very knowledgeable and keep us informed all the time. Manarola is very nice we enjoyed the walking downhill and uphill, even my 11 yr old daughter have no complaints but needed to go to have a dip in the river. Highly recommended and thank you martina and Semeniano for our safety and enjoyable memories of La Spezia and Manarola!!

Potential Drawbacks

Several reviews mention that the time in Pisa is about 2-3 hours, which some find a bit long considering their interest in Cinque Terre. “I would have liked more time in Manarola to swim,” one traveler commented. The bus ride can’t go all the way down to the village, meaning a short walk uphill and downhill, which could be tough for some.

Others note that the tour is quite structured, so if you prefer to explore freely or linger longer, this might not be the best fit. Also, weather can impact certain experiences, like climbing the Tower or swimming, but refunds are possible if access is restricted.
