If you’re planning a day to uncover some of Crete’s most iconic sights, this Heraklion city and Knossos Palace tour is a solid choice. We’ve looked into what travelers are saying, and it seems to deliver a well-balanced mix of history, culture, and local flavor. It’s a chance to wander through ancient ruins and lively streets without feeling overwhelmed or rushed.
What really appeals is how the tour combines the famous Palace of Knossos with a guided walk through Heraklion’s vibrant city center. Plus, the option to explore the Old Market or visit the Archaeological Museum adds some flexibility to your day.
The price point—around $40—feels reasonable considering the guided experience and transportation included. But of course, some might find the timings or the busy crowds at Knossos a little challenging.
Went with my mum and two children aged 9 and 14. It was hot and not much cover at the palace of knossos but our guide Cristina was amazing at finding our group shade and she knew so much that with the ear pieces in we were able to learn from her the history of the place with ease. After this the coach took us into the old town where we were able to independently visit the Archeological Museum and have a very quick bite to eat before catching the coach back to our hotel. We had a wonderful day and can recommend this tour.
Our guide was excellent. Our group was ‘number 1’ and we were first at all the sites at Knosses Palace. The museum was amazing and well worth the 12 euro entry fee. Our pickup transfer was on time and the van was very comfortable. We were big group of 50 but were able to manage without too much discomfort.
Bus: aircon cool, Guide: friendly & informative, really improved seeing Knossos Palace by having a guide, the group was a good size, Heraklion city was a quick tour, plenty time given to explore before return. I explored city and left the museum to explore the following day myself but if you cannot; I would recommend the museum as it gives a richer context to Knossos. Great tour, great day.
This tour is best suited for curious travelers who want a comprehensive snapshot of Crete’s history and culture without the hassle of arranging everything on their own. If you like a mix of guided storytelling and free time to explore at your pace, it’s likely to fit well into your itinerary.

Visiting Knossos Palace
The highlight for many, Knossos Palace, is a must-see. Known as the legendary labyrinth of King Minos, it was once the hub of Minoan civilization. The guided tour here lasts about 80 minutes, giving enough time to explore the expansive ruins without feeling rushed.
Visitors often comment on the incredible architecture and the sense of stepping into history, although some found the crowds a bit overwhelming, which made it harder to fully appreciate the site.
As one reviewer noted, “it was so busy at Knossos, we stayed longer than expected, and the tour in Heraklion was shorter.”
Your guide will share stories about the palace’s history, its myths, and its significance—making the stones and walls come alive. If you’re a history geek or simply curious about ancient civilizations, you’ll find this part fascinating.
The Knossos Palace is a must see, great history and myth. The guide Zoola was lovely and funny too.
Lovely day trip. Our tour guide was called Soula. We Enjoyed the tour guide with her amazing knowledge on everything and she ensured we saw and did everything before leaving us to go around on our own. Overall a very busy day with plenty to do.
Everything went smoothly. Pick up on time, the guide (Christina) was well informed and didn't have any issues to answer extra questions. For the Knossos palace and the city tour, we got headsets to hear her clearly. She always tried to keep us in shade, which was nice considering the temperature. The only thing I would change is to actually visit the museum during the time in Heraklion, because there is not ask much to see as I expected during the 3 hours given before being taken back to our hotel (but that was our decision). Very nice tour!
Exploring Heraklion’s City Center
After Knossos, the bus takes you into the city itself. You’ll have around 2.5 hours of free time—a window that many travelers use for a mix of activities. You can stroll through the lively Old Market, soak in the sights along the Venetian Harbor, or pop into the Archaeological Museum (which is optional and costs around 15 euros).
Several reviews mention how much they enjoyed wandering around the streets, browsing local shops, and grabbing a coffee or lunch.
One guest shared, “Eleni was a brilliant guide, and the archaeological museum was a highlight,” recommending the combined ticket for 20 euros if you want a deeper dive into relics and artifacts. The free time is quite generous, allowing you to tailor the experience—whether you want to shop for souvenirs, sample some local food, or simply enjoy the bustling atmosphere.
Practical Details
Transportation is in a comfortable, air-conditioned bus, which makes a big difference given Crete’s warm climate. The pickup points are conveniently spread across several areas, including Heraklion itself and popular resorts like Malia, Stalida, and Hersonissos.
The schedule involves some driving—around an hour to Knossos, a short stop, then more driving to the city center. Returning is also by bus, which wraps up your day with a convenient drop-off at your hotel or designated points.
More Great Tours NearbyCost and Tickets
The total cost of roughly $39.52 per person makes this a bargain for what’s included. The ticket covers transportation, a guided tour of Knossos, and a walking tour in Heraklion. The main expenses—entry tickets to Knossos (20 euros) and the Archaeological Museum (15 euros)—are paid separately. So, if you’re interested in these sites, budgeting around 35 euros for tickets is wise.

Honest reflections from travelers
Many reviews highlight how knowledgeable and friendly the guides are. As Lesley put it, “Sula was an excellent guide with a vast knowledge of archaeology.” Others appreciated the balance of guided insights and free exploration time, noting that “there was then time to do your own thing before returning to the bus.”
But a few mention that the tour can feel a little hurried, especially at Knossos where crowds can extend the visit longer than planned. One reviewer pointed out, “everything was so over-the-top hurried. I would have liked a little more time to enjoy the site.”
