However, it’s worth noting that some of the more physically limited might find the walking and steps around the site a bit challenging, especially if mobility is an issue.
Our guide Marcelo provided lots of information about the monastery, church and mountains and practical advice and tips about transport and other attractions. We had an amazing day and I highly recommend. Using the cable car and train was a bonus

Starting Point and Easy Access
The tour begins conveniently at one of three central locations in Barcelona, including Plaça d’Espanya or near the Hotel Catalonia Barcelona Plaza. This makes it straightforward to join without extra hassle.
Once you’re on board, the first part of the journey is a 55-minute electric train ride through the picturesque Catalan countryside, which is both smooth and environmentally friendly. This part of the trip sets a relaxed tone and offers glimpses of rural Spain, far from the city buzz.
The Scenic Ascent: Cable Car Ride
One of the tour’s standout features is the cable car ascent up Montserrat’s slopes. The ride lasts about 10 minutes but packs a punch in terms of views. We loved the way the cable car’s panoramic windows framed the rugged mountain formations and the lush greenery below. It’s a thrilling way to start the mountain experience and instantly offers memorable vistas that you’ll want to capture.
Marcelo was prepared, knowledgeable, and answered all questions, not only about Monserat, but also about the region. The tour was well planned around daily crowds at the church, and free time was sufficient to walk to the peaks. But 30 min more would have been ideal. Marcelo was a good source of the history of Monserat. Highly recommended tour!
Excellent day from start to finish. The weather was not the best and the day before our guide Monica texted to make sure we still wanted to go with rain expected or if we wanted to cancel. I didnt expect that and it was extremely thoughtful. We did go and it was well worth it, very interesting to take the train from Barcelona to Montserrat, then the cable car up, and the Rack Railway back down. Monica was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable and accommodating and explained everything well. Would definitely Recommend this tour to anyone in town for the day. Just note, there is a lot of walking and steps as you could expect with several modes of transport and going up a mountain.
We had the best day with the trip to Montserrat with Monica as our guide. She made us feel very welcomed and she had so much interesting information to tell us about Montserrat. I would say it beat our expectations again and again during the day. I recommend this way to discover Montserrat where you get a piece of all the good parts. The cabin cart going up the mountain, the guided tour through the monestary, free time and ending the experience with the rail train going down. Again the warmest recommendations for Monica, our guide for the day, she made us feel very taken care of and was very helpful!
Exploring the Montserrat Monastery
Once at the top, the guided walking tour of the Montserrat Monastery unfolds. The guide shares fascinating insights into its spiritual and cultural significance, making the visit more than just a sightseeing stop—it’s a meaningful experience. You’ll visit the Black Madonna (the Throne of the Virgin), a deeply revered religious icon, where tradition encourages making a wish.
Many reviews mention the special atmosphere here, and the priority access means you avoid long queues, allowing more quality time in this sacred space.

Marcelo was a fun and informative tour guide. He told us impt aspects of the tour and was so kind to give us cookies and souvenirs too as well as a good paella place for lunch! we had a fun experience and the group we had with us was great company too! Its a pity that it went by too fast i felt. I would have like to have more time in church and explore the grounds around. Thanks for taking care of us !
Our guide Monica was exceptional. The trip was perfect, allowing us to see all the beautiful scenery, experience both the funicular and the cog wheel train, see the Basilica, Black Madonna, and the museum. Highly recommend!! Our small group of 9 was perfect and the early arrival avoided all crowds!
Everything was awesome especially our very knowledgeable tour guide!!

Comments like “Marcelo was fabulous,” and “Monica was an exceptional guide,” show how much a good guide can transform a standard sightseeing day into a memorable journey filled with stories, practical tips, and special touches like souvenirs or local food suggestions.
We had a wonderful time on our excursion to Montserrat. The ride there and back was very interesting. The Monestary and grounds were also very interesting. Overall a very good time. Monica our guide was very informative and likeable. I would recommend this trip very highly.
Monica deserves more than a five star rating. She instantly became our friend well before the tour started by leaving feedback and instructions which was very helpful. She was prompt with everything and looked after us like we were her brothers and sisters or her family. In fact, if we lived in Barcelona, we would definitely be friends with her. She’s such a great person, very knowledgable and made the whole day more than we expected. We hated to see it end. She is one very special person that made our trip very extra special. Above and beyond!
Well organised by a very friendly, professional informed guide who looked after us so well with clear instruction on meeting places, timings and things to do in our free time. She was enthusiastic and helpful. The group was small and time passed quickly as no long queues at stations etc .. it was a really interesting trip made even more so by our lovely guide who was in communication before we even met ! Loved her

The Visual Feast
The views from the cable car and train are breathtaking. You’ll see the mountain’s jagged peaks, lush valleys, and panoramic vistas that stretch all the way to the Pyrenees on clear days. The scenery alone makes this tour worth doing.
Potential Drawbacks or Considerations

While overall highly praised, some reviews note that the walking and steps around the monastery and grounds can be demanding for those with mobility issues. The tour isn’t suitable for people with respiratory issues or altitude sickness, given the mountain setting and walking involved.
Weather can also influence the experience. If it’s foggy, rainy, or overcast, some of the scenic views might be obscured, but the guide will adapt the schedule accordingly. It’s worth checking the weather forecast before your trip.
Marcello did a great job providing us with a guided group tour of Montserrat. Our tour was well coordinated from start to finish. Moreover, Marcello was very knowledgeable about the history of Montserrat as well as the city of Barcelona. Throughout the tour he shared lots of interesting facts, figures, and photos which is exactly what my wife and I wanted from a guided tour. Thanks Marcello!
My visit to Montserrat was absolutely unforgettable, thanks to our incredible guide, Monica. Monica had a wonderful way of blending fascinating facts with engaging stories, making every stop along the way feel meaningful and memorable. Her passion for Montserrat was contagious, and she made sure everyone in the group felt comfortable, included, and inspired. Thanks to Monica, what could have been just a scenic trip became a truly enriching and personal experience.
Had a wonderful day with Monica! She was very helpful and informative and we loved visiting Monsersatt. Great day overall
Plus, the tour’s focus on transport and sightseeing means it’s not a deep-dive into Montserrat’s entire history or cultural offerings—if you’re seeking a longer, more in-depth exploration, you might want to supplement this with additional visits.
