If you’re considering a way to experience the culinary heart of Faro, Portugal, a guided walking food tour through the Old Town might just be the perfect choice. While I haven’t personally taken this exact tour, plenty of travelers love it, and the reviews paint a compelling picture.

It’s designed to give you a taste of authentic Algarve cuisine while wandering the charming, historic streets — all led by knowledgeable locals who know the best spots to indulge.

A fantastic tour, the host Ester was informative, funny and a delight to spend the evening with. We were a group of 10 friends so no hesitation in helping our selves to food and wine which was plentiful. I would recommend this tour as a fun and filling way to spend an evening in Faro.

The reality with these things is that it's based on relationships between the tour company and the restaurants and it's easy to be cynical about that. There may well be better food in Faro, but our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Faro and I genuinely believe that she actively seeks out the restaurants that best represent Portugal (she even mentioned that she had recently switched to a different restaurant because of a drop in quality). It is quite expensive, but you're not just paying for the amount of food and drink (I left feeling very full!), you're paying for the variety of dishes (difficult to achieve if you're not a large group), local knowledge and to learn…

What draws us most to this experience are two key aspects: first, the chance to sample around 10 traditional dishes across four carefully selected local spots, and second, the opportunity to learn about Faro’s history and culture without being stuck in a museum. That said, the tour’s three-hour duration means you’ll want to pace yourself, especially if you’re a serious foodie.

One thing to keep in mind: it’s not suitable for vegetarians or vegans, so if you have dietary restrictions, that’s worth factoring in.

This tour seems ideal for anyone wanting to combine culinary discovery with a taste of Faro’s local life—great for first-time visitors or those keen to deepen their appreciation of Portuguese flavors.

Our food tour in Faro was a highlight of our trip, thanks to our incredible host, Ester. She was thoughtful and accommodating, curating an outstanding menu that even our kids enjoyed. We sampled local specialties like Portuguese-style pork, black pork cheek, and seafood tapas. Each dish was full of flavor and beautifully presented. Exploring Old Town Faro at night added to the magic — the cobbled streets and lively atmosphere made the experience unforgettable. Highly recommended!

We had a fantastic experience on Ester’s walking food tour. She was incredibly warm, engaging and impressively knowledgeable about the city’s history, cuisine and culture, offering us plenty of insider recommendations along the way. We sampled a wonderful selection of delicious dishes and local wines across four different stops — I especially enjoyed the chorizo (both fake and real) and the final dessert 😀 I really appreciated how accommodating Ester was, as this was the only tour I found that welcomed both children and seniors and managed to keep everyone entertained while being expertly organised. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting an authentic, memorable and socia…

Expect to try a variety of traditional Algarve dishes, with about ten samples in total. While the specific menu varies, reviews highlight the quality and authenticity of the food, with some dishes standing out as memorable, especially the regional specialties.

My husband and I were pleasantly surprised! It was a great tour with a very knowledgeable guide. She took us to three restaurants and we had the chance to try a few local dishes and wine in each. The first two restaurants were excellent and the dishes we tried were truly wonderful, whilst the third not so much. Nevertheless, it was a most enjoyable evening, with great company. We even went back to one of the restaurants and had dinner the following night because we were so impressed!

The guide’s knowledge helps you appreciate what you’re tasting, making the experience both educational and flavorful.
