If you’re dreaming of exploring the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye, this tour promises an action-packed day filled with breathtaking views, challenging hikes, and interesting stops. While it’s not designed for leisurely sightseeing alone, if you’re into walking, nature, and a bit of adventure, this could be just what you’re looking for.
What really appeals to us about this experience is how it combines the best highlights of Skye with guided hikes that go beyond just admiring the scenery — you get to walk through it. Plus, the small-group vibe (16 seats max) means more personalized attention and fewer crowds at the most popular spots.
One thing to keep in mind is the tour’s emphasis on hiking and walking, which requires a moderate level of fitness. If you’re prone to motion sickness or prefer a more relaxed day of sightseeing, this might not be your perfect fit. Still, if you’re active and eager to see multiple sites with insightful storytelling along the way, this tour tends to hit the mark.
The sites were incredibly beautiful, like nothing I’ve ever seen. Our guide Murdoch was great and entertained us with lots of history and stories during the drive. The coach was comfortable. One word of warning!! I saw a lot of reviews about how the hikes were very mild and more like walks but you really do need a good level of fitness to fully enjoy this tour. I had a lovely time overall but I may have overestimated my “moderate” level of fitness. My hikes are usually strolls through the woods and this was not that. The first two were more manageable but everything is uphill and the Old Man of Storr is intense!! I tried to make it to the top but had to give up. I’m young but I have …
What a fantastic day tripped packed with so much excitement. It definitely helped that the weather was beautiful, but Tim’s energy can’t be beat; he really made the experience fun! There are extra hiking poles if needed, which I think is great; they do help. Lunch is on the early side, but you can always eat on the bus a bit later as you move along through the tour (definitely want to fuel up for Man of Storr). Highly recommend this day trip if you’ve got limited time and want to get in some incredible views.
Our tour guide Tim was not only funny & informative, he was THRILLED about the weather on the day we took this tour. It's about a 3 hour bus ride overall, but Tim kept us entertained with stories, tidbits & fun trivia. In Portree, had a lovely lunch at Relish (recommended by Tim) & got sandwiches for takeaway dinner (which we ate on the way back to Inverness that evening). The hikes at the Fairy Glen, The Quiraing & The Old Man of Storr were moderately difficult (wear hiking boots/shoes) with stunning views. Tim checked in on our group all the way up & back on each hike. The bus was well-appointed with comfortable seats & climate control. Tim was an expert driver on the wild Highland roads. …
This experience suits travelers who value a mix of outdoor activity and scenic exploration, and who don’t mind a long day in the van—about 13 hours total. It’s a fantastic choice for those who want an immersive, adventure-focused trip with plenty of wow moments.

Setting the Scene: What to Expect on This Tour

This tour from Inverness is tailored for those who want to see Skye not just from the bus window but by walking through its landscapes. Starting early at 7:45 am, you’ll be whisked across the Highlands in a well-equipped 16-seater mini-coach—comfortable, with large windows perfect for catching views on the move.
Your first stop is at the famous Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most photographed castles in the world. You won’t have time to tour inside, but the photo opportunity from the designated viewpoint is worth it. This quick stop sets the tone for the day: dramatic scenery, history, and the promise of more to come.
From there, you head towards the Cuillin Mountains, a rugged range of peaks that define Skye’s dramatic landscape. Here, you get about an hour to enjoy the scenery, with options to walk or simply admire the view. Past travelers have loved the chance to explore nearby waterfalls and historic bridges, or just soak in the wild beauty of the setting.
Next comes Portree, the picturesque capital of Skye. You’ll have about 45 minutes for lunch—either pre-ordered from a local bakery or bringing your own snacks—plus time to wander the colorful shoreline and explore boutique shops. Many find Portree’s charm to be a highlight, with its pastel houses hugging the harbor.
Following lunch, the tour takes you to the Fairy Glen, a fairy-tale landscape of grassy conical hills, craggy outcrops, and tiny lochans. It’s a quick stop, but the scenery feels otherworldly, and many visitors enjoy a short walk here. Past reviews describe it as “bizarre yet delightful,” perfect for a bit of whimsy.
This day trip was by far the best tour I’ve ever done. As a nature lover, it exceeded my expectations. Fairy Glen is truly magical. The 3 hikes were the perfect amount of activity for my mid 60s husband and I and our 30 something son and his wife. But the gravy came with our tour guide Murdoch. He entertained us for hours and hours with engaging history and personal tales while he expertly drove us through one of the most beautiful places on earth. Do this trip! Don’t think twice.
Tim was a fantastic tour guide! Even though it was terrible weather, he showed us great look out spots and we had amazing views. I would highly recommend bringing waterproof everything!
It was cold, wet, BUT I had the BEST time. Tim, our driver/tour guide was very knowledgeable, fun, and funny. The terrain absolutely STUNNING!! The rain and the wind added to the experience but in the best way. I will do this again! if you're thinking about it…..just do it, you will not regret the decision. If you are traveling in early/mid September prep well. DO NOT wear a poncho… EVER. The wind will make your hike 10x harder. ( parachute effect) make sure you have water resistant and repellent pants, jacket, and shoes. Hats are a plus
The next hike is to the Old Man of Storr, a jagged basalt formation often called a giant’s thumb. The steep climb to the base offers sweeping views of the surrounding pinnacles and, on clear days, the Cuillin Mountains across the sound. This is a longer stop—about 1 hour and 45 minutes—so bring your camera and enjoy the sense of achievement.
Finally, the Quiraing landslip area wraps up the day. Recognizable from movies like Stardust, its surreal landscapes of landslips and rocky formations are a photographer’s dream. With about 40 minutes here, you can enjoy a short walk or simply marvel at the scenery from the coach.
The trip wraps up with a quick photo stop at Eilean Donan Castle on the way back to Inverness, arriving around 9 pm.
