If you’re dreaming of spotting whales in their natural habitat while exploring the icy waters of northern Norway, this whale watching RIB safari from Tromsø to Skjervøy might catch your eye. We’ve looked into this tour to see if it lives up to its promise of Arctic adventure, and what you can realistically expect.

What really appeals to us? First, the fact that you’re on a small, intimate group experience with knowledgeable guides, rather than a crowded boat filled with strangers. Second, the emphasis on respecting wildlife—there’s a clear stance on not chasing whales aggressively, which makes us appreciate the responsible approach.

One consideration to keep in mind: the timing is quite early in the morning, with the bus leaving Tromsø at 5:20 AM and a drive of about 3.5 hours to Skjervøy. That means an early wake-up call, but for many, the reward of being in pristine Arctic waters and catching sightings of orca, humpbacks, and fin whales is well worth it.

An incredible experience, it was a dream come true to be able to live this moment. I was lucky enough to see a fin whale, as well as orcas, which was absolutely surprising. The scenery alone is worth the trip, but what made the experience even more incredible were the orcas and the fin whale. I have no words to describe, it was unreal. The guides were attentive from start to finish, and I highly recommend this experience. Oh, and don’t forget to dress very warmly! They provided me with a second pair of socks, but I think a third pair would be very welcome haha. Also, bring a thin pair of gloves to wear underneath the thicker ones would be ideal. Takk Norge ♥️
Catalina
Amazing experience! The guides really know what they’re doing, we saw humpback whales and a pod of orcas, respecting their space.
Greta
Amazing experience, our guide and captain were absolutely great. Got to see many orcas and humpback whales. Totally worth it!

This tour is particularly suited for travelers who love wildlife, don’t mind the cold, and want a more personalized experience away from larger commercial groups. It’s less ideal if you’re prone to seasickness or traveling with very young children under 6.

We had such a lovely time with Ina, she ensured we were all warm and comfortable on the rib. She took us to the spots to find the whales and we were so lucky to see lots of Orcas!! It was a perfect bucket list day! Afterwards Ina gave us some hot drinks and some sandwiches before getting the coach back. This is nothing to do with the quality of this amazing company who you go on the rib with- but to do with the coach information: The only note we didn’t know before was in regards to the transport to Skjervøy. We got to the bus station and we waited at the signposted stand 5, and there was loads of people all at different number stops. The first four coaches turned up at stands 1-4, and we…
