Exploring the Edinburgh to Isle of Skye and Hogwarts Express 4-Day Tour

Travelers looking to stretch their legs beyond Edinburgh’s bustling streets often find themselves drawn to the breathtaking landscapes of Scotland’s Highlands. This 4-day guided trip offers a blend of natural splendor, historic sites, and a touch of magic with the Hogwarts Express experience.
What we really like about this tour is how it balances the scenic highlights—like the Isle of Skye and Glen Coe—with cultural storytelling that keeps the journey engaging. Plus, the inclusion of the Jacobite Steam Train adds a dash of cinematic nostalgia, especially for Harry Potter fans.
We had fun and, after getting used to our local guide's (Craig in a kilt) very Scottish accent, a very informative time with a splash of dry humor. The small group felt intimate and comfortable. Lucky that we mostly had the same wants specially with the activities like walking to the different locations like the Faery pools (quite a workout!) and riding the Jacobite Steam Train. Craig tried his best to accommodate us so we appreciate him all the more.
Our guide, Rob was wonderful, very accommodating and helpful, he also made the driving portion enjoyable and entertaining with his stories and humor! Highly recommended
We had the absolute best time with Highland Experience Tours. Having never been on a group tour we weren’t sure what to expect, but it exceeded our expectations! It was extremely well organised, covered incredible locations and took the stress of planning it ourselves out of the picture! It can be hard to find the right accommodation and think of how to drive around yourself I can imagine. What we got on this tour was a fantastic guide Brodie who made the experience what it was – awesome!! Brodie had excellent knowledge and explained the history of all locations visited and added lots of humour. It was great having a smaller group to connect with. The B&B’s we were put into were also ama…
On the flip side, one thing to keep in mind is that the itinerary can change due to weather or circumstances beyond the tour company’s control. This flexibility is necessary but might mean a slight shift in what you see and do.
This tour is well-suited for travelers who want a rich, scenic experience with a good mix of history, nature, and storytelling—perfect if you’re eager to absorb Scotland’s legendary landscapes without the hassle of planning every detail yourself.

The trip kicks off inside a Caffe Nero on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile—a location that’s both central and easy to find. From there, you’re on your way into the Highlands, heading toward some of Scotland’s most dramatic scenery. The small group size ensures a more personal experience, which many reviews highlight as a big plus—you’re not just another face on a coach.
Pitlochry & Fort Augustus
Your first stop is Pitlochry, a charming town known for its scenic beauty and historic touches. Here, you’ll enjoy a leisurely drive, often with the chance to stretch your legs and soak in the views. Later, in Fort Augustus, lunch is usually on your own, giving you a bit of freedom to explore or grab a bite at local cafes.
More Great Tours NearbyEilean Donan Castle
On the way to Skye, the tour stops at the iconic Eilean Donan Castle. As many reviewers note, this castle is one of the most photographed sites in Scotland—its setting on a small island connected by a bridge makes for spectacular photos. While the castle itself isn’t always included in the ticket price, viewing it from outside is a treat, and added visits are available for those interested.

The Isle of Skye
The ultimate highlight of the trip is Skye, famous for its rugged coastlines, fairy-tale landscapes, and atmospheric villages. Many travelers describe the scenery as breathtaking, with some noting the guide’s storytelling making the landscapes even more vivid. One reviewer mentioned how the guide, Rose, made the experience special by sharing captivating tales and even dressing up as characters from Harry Potter, adding a playful touch.
The whole experience was absolutely amazing! Our tour guide John was fantastic, he took care of the whole group, giving us a lot of information about the places we were visiting (pointing out everything Harry Potter and Outlander related) adding interesting stories, legends and very good Scottish music! He gave us the chance to see wonderful spots of the Highlands and the Isle of Skye. The high-end accomodations were very comfortable and cozy as well as the hosts were all really kind and caring. We highly recommend it!
We weren't sure of what to expect, as the description of the tour didn't specifiy every exact location, but rather more general areas. Cameron, our AMAZING tour guide, managed to include every iconic spots we had researched and hoped we would get to stop at, or at least pass by. Cameron shared rich and detailed stories/historical context at each location, he went above and beyond, huge shout out to Cameron! The tour itself was perfectly paced and beautiful organized! However, this is only possible if you are on a tour with other guests who respect the time allowance at each location. Cameron gave ample time at each sight, and everyone on our tour respected that time. I've been on other tours…
The tour was amazing. Iain was a wonderful guide who made the trip fun, shared great stories and jokes, took us to places we wouldn’t have known to go and shared a lot about Scotland. It was well worth the money and we would highly recommend this tour to anyone considering it. DO IT! You won’t regret it!
Glen Coe & the Highlands
Glen Coe, known for its dramatic valleys and tragic history, offers a powerful visual experience. We loved the way guides tend to share stories that bring these landscapes alive, making each stop more than just a photo opportunity. The scenery here is often described as unspoiled and awe-inspiring, perfect for those Insta-worthy shots.
The Hogwarts Express & Jacobite Steam Train
A standout feature is the train ride on the Jacobite Steam Train, which many reviews herald as a real highlight. Booked as part of the tour, this journey through the Highlands feels like stepping into a Harry Potter film, crossing the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. Travelers love the nostalgic vibe and the chance to see the scenery in a different way—many mention it’s worth every penny. However, a few reviews note that weather or operational issues, like the cancellation of the Harry Potter railway ride, could impact your experience.
Additional Stops & Ferry
Depending on weather conditions and schedule adjustments, the ferry from Skye might be part of your trip—adding a different perspective of the islands. Photo opportunities are frequent, and guides usually know the best times to capture the scenery.
Lodging & Meals
Across three nights, accommodations tend to be cozy and welcoming, featuring Scottish hospitality that many guests appreciate. Breakfasts are included, allowing you to start each day fueled for adventure. Food and drinks outside of breakfast are not included, so you might want to plan ahead or explore local restaurants, many of which have rave reviews for their seafood and traditional dishes.

Guests consistently mention that the experience offers good value for money, particularly because of the memorable sites and the stories that add depth to the scenery.
A few reviews point out some limitations, like the cabins or lodgings being a bit basic or limited dining options at certain stops. However, this seems to be a minor trade-off for the overall quality of the trip. The focus on scenic beauty and storytelling remains front and center.
