What You’ll Do During the Workshop

Once you arrive, you’ll be introduced to the history of mosaic lamps and their significance in Turkish culture. While the detailed history isn’t overly emphasized, it’s enough to give you context and deepen your appreciation for the craft. The real focus, though, is on your own design.

You’ll select from over 55 different colors and shapes of glass beads to personalize your lamp. The variety allows for a lot of creativity—whether you prefer a geometric pattern, a more abstract design, or a specific color scheme.

The instructors guide you through the process, making sure you’re comfortable with each step, from gluing the mosaic pieces onto the lamp’s base to assembling the cover and installing the bulb.

What’s Included and How It Works

The price of $30 per person is quite reasonable when you consider everything that’s included. You get all the necessary materials: the glass beads, the lamp base, cover, and bulb. The session runs for about 1 to 2 hours, which is a good length to keep things fun but not overwhelming.

My partner and I had the pleasure of participating in a Turkish lamp-making activity in Istanbul on 14th november. Our guide, Godan, was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel comfortable from the very beginning. He was knowledgeable and passionate about the craft, sharing fascinating stories about the origin of these lamps and their symbolic meanings. Throughout the workshop, Godan gave us constant tips and advice on how to create our lamps. He was always there to guide us, but also gave us the freedom to express our creativity. My partner chose to make a small lamp, while I went for the larger one, which had an extra cost of 2000 liras. The best part of the experience was that f…

Had a blast! The directions to the atelier were very clear, and the space was lovely. There were other activities there as well, like perfume making, and they provided us with cay and lokum during the class. Zeynep was a great class leader, she talked a little bit about the history of the lamps and suggested colour combinations and designs. It was only 4 of us during the class and we weren't rushed at all. Overall had a fantastic time and got a one of a kind souvenir out of it as well. Absolutely worth it.
Lorenzo
Super cool workshop and it's a nice idea to create your own souvenir! It was super fun and the lamps looks very cool!

Throughout the session, you’re also treated to unlimited Turkish hot drinks and snacks—think tea and sweets—that add a touch of hospitality to the experience. These little touches help make the creative process more relaxed and social.

Once your masterpiece is complete, it’s placed in a secure, travel-friendly packaging so you can take it home without worry. Many reviews mention how well their lamps are packaged, which is a relief if you’re flying or traveling onward.

The Guide’s Role and Group Dynamics

From reviews, it’s clear that guides and instructors make a big difference here. Several guests praised their teachers for being knowledgeable, welcoming, and helpful—“Elmaq and Darren were absolutely excellent,” says one review. They are there to support you through every step and help with design advice if needed.

Groups tend to stay small, which keeps the atmosphere cozy and personalized. Whether you’re traveling alone or with friends, you’ll find the environment friendly and encouraging. For families, it can be a fun, interactive activity that’s engaging for kids and parents alike—though it’s not specifically marketed as a family activity.

What Are the Downsides?

Istanbul: Mosaic Lamp Workshop in a Stylish Galata Atelier - What Are the Downsides?

While this activity offers a lot of value, some practical considerations are worth noting. The duration is relatively short—about 1 to 2 hours—so if you’re after a full-day cultural tour, this will be just a small part of your day. The location, while central, might be a bit tricky to find on your first visit to the studio, but the directions are clear enough once you’re there.

Since the activity involves handling glass beads and glue, it’s not ideal for very young children or those with mobility issues. Also, if you’re very particular about your design or want a complex, large-scale project, this might feel limiting. But for most travelers, the manageable scope and friendly guidance make it just right.

Final Thoughts

The combination of expert guidance, a comfortable studio environment, and the joy of creating something with your own hands makes it stand out as a memorable part of any Istanbul trip.

It’s especially suited for arts and crafts lovers, curious travelers, or anyone wanting a peaceful break from more hectic sightseeing. The price point is fair, given the all-inclusive nature of the experience and the quality of the end product. Plus, the central Galata location makes it easy to incorporate into your day.

If you’re looking for a fun, hands-on activity that leaves you with a beautiful, usable keepsake—this workshop ticks all those boxes. It’s a simple, well-organized way to enjoy Turkish culture and walk away with a colorful story you made yourself.
