4.6(491 reviews)From $220 per person

If you’re considering a Northern Lights experience in Tromsø, chances are you’ve seen plenty of tours claiming to be the best.

This particular Aurora Hunt with Citizen Science from Wandering Owl piqued our interest because it combines the classic excitement of chasing the Aurora Borealis with the added bonus of contributing to local environmental research. That’s a combo that feels meaningful and not just another tourist trap.

What immediately caught our eye was the expert-guided approach and the focus on finding clear skies—a key factor in Aurora viewing—plus the promise of warm homemade soup and hot chocolate by the campfire. The fact that it’s a small group experience also appeals to those who want a more intimate and personalized outing, rather than being part of a huge crowd.

Trip was wonderful! Magda and Iliyan were fantastic! Magda is a great story teller and full of scientific knowledge as well, even keeping my kids engaged (15 & 10). They took us to a beautiful spot by the lighthouse and we saw the Northern Lights, which were just spectacular! Iliyan set up a nice campfire and served delicious vegan soup (parsnip curry) to help keep us warm. We stayed and watched the lights for a few hours and it was magical! Then we went to another spot that was more of a winter wonderland to have hot cocoa and homemade cookies. It was just wonderful!
Romina
Our guide was really professional and care about us having good experience. Excellent driver and a lot of good information. The hot chocolate was really good as well 😋.
Erina
Amazing tour! Tomas made the night very special by ensuring we got the best clear sky possible. Very knowledgeable. Michael who drove was lovely and kept us all safe. Best driver in Tromso! Could not recommend this tour enough.

However, it’s worth noting that, like any Aurora tour, there’s no guarantee of sightings. Weather and solar activity play a big role, but the team’s dedication to finding the best viewing spots and their scientific approach adds a layer of value that many other tours might not offer. If you’re someone who loves a mix of adventure, learning, and cozy moments, this could be a solid choice.

This experience would suit travelers who appreciate guides, are okay with some unpredictability in Aurora viewing, and want to give back to science while chasing the lights. It’s less about luxury and more about an authentic Arctic adventure with a purpose.

Juan was great. He walked us through the process and patiently answered all our questions. The winter suites and soup were a life saver. The team also stopped midway when the lights were visible, so this too was amazing. They made sure we got to see some really good light display.

We had a fantastic aurora hunt with Lucas and Illiyan – they were both highly dedicated, welcoming and professional and you could sense a genuine passion for aurora hunting in both of them. After a cloudy and rainy departure in Tromsø we drove out north and after setting up camp and enjoying a cosy view of the Fjords, we were finally rewarded with two hours of lights. Lucas took excellent pictures and helped everybody set up their own cameras as well, whilst educating us on some of the cultural and scientific context on the way there and back respectively. We really enjoyed the tour and would have done so even if we had not seen the lights, but thanks to the team this now truly exceeded our…

Javi did some excellent portraits of us and aurora. On our way back to Tromsø we stoped a couple of times to see ever better lights. A night to remember!!!

This was an absolutely breathtaking experience. We lucked out with the weather and had an unforgettable experience of Northern Lights on a crystal clear night. Magda, our guide, was warm, welcoming and knowledgeable. Chris safely drove us to the best viewing spots in the comfort of the minibus. They built a lovely campfire and served us a delicious vegan soup, as we watched the incredible show in the heavens above. And of coursezc the boats and snowsuit were very appreciated. Highly recommend this experience and this team. Absolutely delightful.

There were so many northern lights tours to choose from but I’m so glad we chose this one! Our guide was Anna and our driver was Marcin. Anna was so warm, funny, interesting and knowledgable! She made the whole experience feel adventurous and fun. The food was all homemade and delicious. She gave us photography tips and made sure we captured some memories. Marcin did an incredible job – the weather warmed up and all of the snow turned to ice which made even walking down the street a treacherous activity but he got us there and back safely and comfortably! We had challenging conditions but we went all the way to a Finland and Anna managed to find us a totally clear sky which was beyond all …

I had an unforgettable experience on the Aurora tour with Wandering Owl. Our guides, Mia and Jodnas, were professional and empathetic, always ensuring everyone’s needs and well-being were met. We were provided with thermal overalls, boots, and headlamps to keep us comfortable in the chilly Arctic, and the fire they set up created a warm, inviting atmosphere amid the cold. The hot, flavorful food was carefully prepared to accommodate special dietary needs. Knowledgeable about the area, they took us to a beach an hour from Tromsø with perfect conditions for viewing the Aurora. We spent around five hours marveling at the lights while receiving excellent photography tips. They made us feel pa…

The Guide and Driver with both consummate professionals, doing all within their power to get us to a clearing where we could see the Northern Lights. Unfortunately, the cloud cover was too extensive, but Lucas kept our spirits up and our driver Elowyn was competent and got us through some pretty severe winter road conditions.
