If you’re dreaming of seeing whales in their natural habitat while exploring Norway’s Arctic waters, this tour might catch your eye. We haven’t done it ourselves, but based on reviews and details, it appears to be a well-organized, eco-conscious way to encounter some of the ocean’s most magnificent creatures.
What we really like about this experience is the combination of comfort and adventure: traveling aboard a modern, high-speed catamaran ensures you get to the whale hotspots quickly, and the panoramic windows promise great views no matter where you’re sitting. Plus, the guides are praised for being knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about marine life.
On the flip side, a potential consideration is that whale sightings aren’t guaranteed — this is wildlife, after all. Weather can also impact visibility and the overall experience. Still, for those seeking a respectful, eco-friendly approach to whale watching and who enjoy a scenic boat ride, this tour is likely worth the price.
I can get quite sea sick, so I was a little apprehensive with an 8 hour boat journey but the majority of it was very calm. This can vary, but the first bit you barely notice! The guides were really useful, Daniel spoke to us on the boat on the way to the spot to see the whales to find out what we were hoping to see and to give us some information. When we saw the whales, the guides were always making announcements of where to look and what we had seen. We were lucky and saw around 15-20 orcas – including when they were hunting, 6 humpback and 1 fin whale, plus a sea eagle! The captain tried to remain ethical by staying at a distance at all times, unlike other boats. There was a quiz on the w…
Hello, we booked a trip for two the price is kinda high.. because it depends on the weather mostly.. so it should more convenient price. Seeing the orcas is just a possibility and nothing is guaranteed.. although we had the chance to see one of them. It was so wonderful. Hot drinks are for free. The staff is really friendly and kind and we got well educated about the Orcas. For ppl with a car.. there a parking nearby but u should come really early so u can catch a spot. I hope i managed to help u with my personal experience.
Absolutely amazing! Saw many orcas just in front of us swimming and dancing with the seagulls! The guides were amazing, experienced, funny, friendly, and caring too! Great hospitality, please don’t worry about food and drinks during the trip – all provided! Big highlight of the whole trip in Tromso, will definitely choose again for future trips!
This trip suits travelers who value educational insights, appreciate comfortable boat rides, and are prepared for a long day on the water. If your goal is to see whales and learn about the Arctic ecosystem, it’s a solid choice.

The Starting Point and Logistics
You’ll meet the tour at the Rødne Fjord Cruise harbor behind Tromsø’s Nerstranda Shopping Centre. The boat, MS Rygerdronningen, departs on a carefully scheduled basis, with the full day lasting about 8 hours. It’s a long trip, but the journey kicks off with a 2.75-hour cruise that’s often described as calm and comfortable, thanks to the modern vessel’s design.
Many reviews highlight the importance of dressing warmly—think layers, hat, gloves, scarf, and socks—as it can get quite cold on the water, even in winter. The boat provides a cozy environment, but bringing your own warm clothing makes all the difference, especially if you’re prone to seasickness, which some reviews mention as manageable with medication.
The Scenic Voyage to the Whale Area
As you head towards the whale hotspots, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Lyngen Alps—a stunning backdrop that makes the long hours on deck feel less like a wait and more like part of the adventure. The trip itself is often described as beautiful, with many reviewers mentioning the breathtaking landscapes and the peaceful quality of the Arctic waters.
kudos to maja, anna and the wonderful team aboard the rygertroll for organizing the wonderful tour highlights: 1. Maja and Anna are very enthusiastic and well informed about the whales. they had a neat presentation about everything we should know about the whales. they also answerd so many of our questions 2. plenty of hot drinks onboard to keep us warm given the biting cold sea wind 3. respectful tour – the captain and team did not do anything to trouble / scare the whals, and were at a respectful distance 4. we saw fin whales (rare), hump backs and orcas!
It was a wonderful day! We had great sightings of three different species of whales. The staff were really informative and polite. The view enroute was amazing too!!
Amazing trip from start to finish. Jenny, Daniel and Anna were fantastic. 100% have to do it if visiting the area.
The guides do a good job of sharing insights about local history and ecology, so even the travel time becomes enriching. Plus, you can relax inside the spacious lounge with panoramic windows, making it easier to spot wildlife or just enjoy the scenery.
The Skjervøy Stop
After a couple of hours, the boat arrives at Skjervøy, where you’ll spend about 2.5 hours. Here, the boat often makes a photo stop and provides opportunities for sightseeing. This part of the journey is about balance—there’s enough time to relax, take pictures, and listen to guides’ stories, all while keeping an eye on the water for whales.
More Great Tours NearbyWhale Watching: The Main Event
Many reviewers love seeing orcas, humpbacks, and even fin whales. Several mention that they’ve seen 15-20 whales, including whales hunting, breaching, or just swimming close to the boat. For example, one guest noted, “We saw around 15-20 orcas — including when they were hunting, 6 humpbacks, and a fin whale,” illustrating how many whales can be spotted on a good day.
The guides are consistently praised for their announcements and explanations, making it easier to spot the whales and understanding their behavior. They also maintain a respectful distance, aligning with eco-guidelines, which many appreciate. One guest shared, “The captain tried to remain ethical by staying at a distance, unlike other boats,” emphasizing the responsible approach.
Maja and Anna were both really incredibly nice and full of dedication. They told us everything in great detail and always kept us up to date when we saw whales. It was a very nice experience and I can recommend it.

Food, Comfort, and Extras
The boat offers hot drinks, which many travelers mention as a welcome touch in cold weather. The inside space is described as clean, spacious, and cozy, with plenty of room to sit or stand on deck. Several reviews highlight that the crew is friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive, creating a welcoming atmosphere.
While the trip is long, and you might get hungry, some feedback suggests bringing snacks or lunch, as the provided options are limited to salmon wraps and chicken wraps. Interestingly, the guides sometimes run interactive quizzes or share videos about whales, adding a fun, educational element to the day.
Sighting Guarantee and Second Tour Policy
Because whale sightings depend on marine life and weather, this tour doesn’t promise encounters. However, if you don’t see any whales, you get to book a second tour for free—a thoughtful policy that many reviews seem to appreciate, as it reduces the risk of disappointment.
The Return Journey and Northern Lights
On the way back, many travelers have the chance to see the Northern Lights, weather permitting. The scenery during the return trip is often described as gorgeous at sunrise, with some reviewers noting that they’ve experienced this magical celestial display. This adds a memorable bonus to an already special day.
Friday, Anna and Magnus were friendly, informative and fun. Great guides on a wonderful trip where we saw Orcas, Humpbacks and a Fin Whale (very briefly). Would recommend!
Outstanding! We saw whales (humpbacks and Orcas) against the backdrop of the Norwegian fjords and mountains. It was simply magical!
Lucia, Carolin, and Maja, as well as the rest of the crew, gave us a fantastic experience. The stories they told us during the trip made the long journey much more enjoyable. We saw many different groups of orcas. One orca swam very close to the ship; it was truly impressive. We also had to leave one group of orcas because there were so many other boats around, so as not to crowd them. Sad for us, but wonderful for the animals ❥
Price and Value

While the price may seem high, especially considering the long duration, reviews frequently mention excellent guides, comfortable vessels, and the chance to see a variety of whales as worth the investment. The focus on eco-responsibility and respectful wildlife viewing also adds intangible value, making it more than just a sightseeing tour.
It’s important to weigh the cost against the potential for unpredictable wildlife encounters. Nonetheless, with many guests describing the experience as “magical” and “worth every penny,” it seems like a solid choice for those serious about whale watching.
