If you’re visiting Zurich and want to see a good slice of Swiss charm without planning every detail yourself, a day trip like this might be just what you need.

We’ve looked into this tour that takes you from Zurich to the breathtaking Rhine Falls, a sweet visit to a chocolarium, and a taste of Swiss cheese at the Appenzeller Schaukäserei, all topped off with a stroll through the charming village of Appenzell.

What we really like about this experience is how it combines natural beauty with Swiss culinary traditions—you get impressive waterfalls and delicious treats all in one day. The small group feel and the presence of a driver-guide mean you’re not just on a bus listening to recordings; you’re being guided by someone who knows the ins and outs of each stop.

Everything was great. Tour guide was helpful and made the experience even better. Areas were beautiful and accessible. Rhine falls was amazing natural wonder and the walk around the lake was gorgeous especially in Autumn. Then the chocolate and cheese factory tours were fun and delicious. Definitely worth my money and I truly enjoyed this and recommend this !

Excellent day trip for all the family, could have done with a bit longer in the Chocolarium as an hour wasn't quite enough. Tony and John were great guides/driver. Tony was very knowledgeable and welcoming. Highly recommend this trip.

That said, a possible consideration is the long drive times between stops, which might feel a bit tiring if you prefer a more relaxed pace.

This tour is best suited for travelers who enjoy a mix of nature, food, and cultural sights without the hassle of planning. It’s especially good if you’re visiting Zurich for a few days and want that iconic Swiss experience without sacrificing too much time.

Starting Point and First Stop: Rhine Falls

The day kicks off from Zurich, with pickup at Ausstellungsstrasse 5. From there, it’s about 45 minutes of coach travel to the Rhine Falls, and this is where the trip really begins to shine. The Rhine Falls are widely regarded as a true natural wonder, and seeing them in person offers a sense of the raw power of nature that photos can’t fully capture.

Many reviews highlight how spectacular the falls are, with some mentioning that the time allocated (around 2.5 hours) allows for a good amount of sightseeing, including a self-guided tour and optional boat rides (which can be upgraded). One traveler noted, “The falls are great to see and very beautiful,” and suggested combining it with a boat tour for extra insight into the history and scale.

Tour was perfect, everything was organized very well. It was very welcoming. I especially give special thanks to our tour guide Tony, he was explaining every details of surroundings very well, nicely briefed. I would highly recommend to do this
Angela
The Rhine River activity was one of my favorite days in Switzerland! I traveled alone and felt very comfortable with the group tour! The falls was breathtaking!
Camila
The falls are great to see and very beautiful tour. I recommend taking the 30 min boat tour combined (extra) to understand the history of the place, which is very nice. Tony was an amazing guide and driver, and gave all the tips about each place. The cheese tasting was delicious and you can make your own chocolate candy bar at the factory, which was so nice for the kids – and adults! Even facing a rainy day, was such a nice experience!

Moving On: Swiss Chocolate at the Chocolarium

After returning to the coach, the journey continues to the Chocolarium, a dedicated chocolate factory where you get to learn about the secrets of Swiss chocolate making. This part of the trip is a hit among visitors who love sweets.

You’ll enjoy a self-guided visit lasting about 1.5 hours, during which you can explore the factory, see how chocolate is made, and, of course, sample some of the delicious goods.

A common comment from travelers is how delightful and fun this part is, especially for those who like to try making their own candy bars or simply enjoy tasting a variety of chocolates. One reviewer mentioned, “The chocolate and cheese factory tours were fun and delicious,” indicating that the experience is as tasty as it is educational.

Swiss Cheese: Appenzeller Schaukäserei

Next, you’ll visit the Appenzeller Schaukäserei, a cheese dairy that offers a traditional Swiss cheese experience. Here, you can see the cheese-making process, although it’s worth noting that actual production isn’t happening at the moment (so don’t expect to see cheese being made). The visit is more about tasting and understanding Swiss cheese craftsmanship.

A perfect activity for a rainy or sunny day! Our tour guide Toni was so helpful and kind, we had the best day! You definitely get a lot of bang for your buck. The bus is very nice and since the day is long I recommend bringing a portable charger! Highly recommend !

It’s amazing trip The tour guide and driver were a nice and helpful person and had interesting information about Switzerland and its history. I very much enjoyed the trip
GetYourGuide
Loved it. However, they should skip going back to zurich part and the cheese factory does not offer a lot of tasting.

Many travelers comment on how authentic and enjoyable this stop is, though some noted that the cheese tasting could be a bit limited—”the cheese factory was not very much,” as one review puts it. Still, the cheese tasting is enough to give you a real sense of local Swiss flavors.

Exploring Appenzell

After the cheese stop, you’ll get some free time in the picturesque village of Appenzell, where narrow streets, colorful houses, and frescoed facades create a picture-perfect setting. Even if shops are closed (they close on Sundays), the scenery alone makes it worth the visit.

Many reviews suggest it’s a charming spot to take photos, breathe the mountain air, and enjoy Swiss hospitality at a cozy café or just wandering the streets.

The Landsgemeindeplatz, where Switzerland’s traditional open-air assembly takes place, adds a cultural touch. The surrounding Alps provide stunning vistas, great for a quick hike or just soaking in the scenery.

Return Journey

The coach ride back to Zurich takes about 80 minutes, during which many travelers enjoy reflecting on the day’s sights. Some note that part of the return involves picking up additional travelers, which can extend the day a bit more than expected—an important consideration if you prefer a shorter, more relaxed trip.

What We Think: The Practicalities

Zurich: Rhine Falls, Chocolate & Cheese Factory Day Trip - What We Think: The Practicalities

This tour offers a lot of value for the price, especially considering the diverse experiences packed into one day. For $141, you get transportation, entry to the waterfalls, the chocolate factory, and cheese tasting, plus the charming village walk. The self-guided nature of the stops allows you to set your own pace, which most travelers appreciated.

The guides receive high praise for their friendliness and knowledge. Many reviews highlight how helpful and engaging the driver-guide was, making the long drives more interesting with commentary and fun facts.

However, it’s worth mentioning that the long drive times — around 45 minutes to an hour between stops — can make the day feel a bit stretched, especially if you’re not someone who enjoys sitting in a coach for extended periods. Also, the visit to the cheese dairy doesn’t involve actual cheese production, which might disappoint some expecting a more behind-the-scenes look.

Jennifer
Tony was an excellent tour guide. He made the day fun for all!
Safaa
The trip was really enjoyable overall. The only downside was having to return to Zurich to pick up additional people for the second half of the trip, which wasted about 2 to 3 hours. This meant those of us who had purchased the full-day trip spent that time driving from the falls back to Zurich and waiting for the others to join us.
Nurana
The driver is soo kind and helpfull. Thanks a lot🙏🏻
