If you’re dreaming of an authentic Alaskan adventure that mixes breathtaking scenery with a splash of adrenaline, this Helicopter Glacier Dogsled Tour might just be what you’re after. While we haven’t taken it ourselves, the reviews and details paint a picture of a special experience—one that combines aerial views, icy explorations, and close encounters with sled dogs.

What really caught our eye is the small group size, capped at just nine participants, which promises a more personal experience.

Plus, the variety of activities packed into just about two hours means you get a lot for your money — from soaring above glaciers to walking on ice and meeting the dogs that race across the snow. However, it’s not without some considerations, particularly around weather dependence and price.

What a great experience the pilot of the helicopter was Connor he went above and beyond, to make sure we had a smooth and safe flight. We did the 2 hour excursion which included dog sled on the glacier and then landed on top of a glacier where we got to dip our cups in sky blue pond on the glacier. We will remember this trip for the rest of our lives. When we come back to anchorage we will have Connor take us on another excursion. Make sure you book 6 to 8 month ahead of time.

From our arrivals to our departure, the staff was amazing. The pilot was so comforting, explaining everything. We went dog sweating, and we had a great mush team.. and then landed on a glacier. This is a must do trip.

This tour was unforgettable! The helicopter ride offered stunning views, and our pilot Darrell was fantastic. We never felt rushed. Dog camp was amazing — we had time to interact with the dogs and enjoy sledding. Landing on the lower glacier and seeing a melt pool up close was surreal. Everything was smooth, safe, and exactly as advertised. Don’t miss this! For an extra fee, transport from Anchorage to the departure point is available & was seamless.

Still, if you’re looking for a bucket-list trip that offers a true taste of Alaskan wilderness, this tour could be perfect.

Travelers who love scenic flights, outdoor adventures, and unique wildlife encounters will enjoy this quite a lot. It’s especially suited to those who want a well-rounded experience that breaks away from typical sightseeing and indulges in the full Alaskan outdoors.

Starting Point: Alaska Glacier Lodge

The adventure kicks off at the Alaska Glacier Lodge, where you’ll check in and prepare for the day ahead. The check-in process is straightforward and free, and most travelers find the meeting point easy to access. It’s worth noting that transportation to the lodge isn’t included, so if you’re staying in Anchorage or Palmer, you’ll need to arrange your own transfer or pay an additional fee.

Once there, the excitement begins. You’ll be fitted with waterproof overboots—these are a nice touch, especially when walking on ice and snow. Be prepared for the weather: layers, rain gear, hats, and gloves are recommended because the environment is high altitude and prone to wet weather.

The Helicopter Flight

The highlight for many is the 30-minute helicopter ride over glaciers and icebergs. Flying in a Robinson 44 or ASTAR helicopter, your pilot will guide you over some of the most stunning icy landscapes you’ve ever seen. Reviewers repeatedly mention how the pilots are not only skilled but also knowledgeable, sharing interesting facts about the scenery below.

One reviewer, Brian, called the pilot Christian “an amazing pilot with a wealth of information,” emphasizing how the views are “world class.” Expect to see crevasses, melt pools, and possibly some wildlife like moose or mountain goats spotted by your pilot. Flying low over the ice allows for incredible photo opportunities and a sense of being immersed in the landscape.

This experience was great. Everyone was very professional. All staff provided info on the helicopter flight and travels. We were a group of 4. We enjoyed the helicopter ride. The sights are remarkable! We loved the dog mushing ride, meeting the dogs and learning all about the way of life here for the dogs and their trainers. We stopped on a glacier. Ot was unreal to be standing on a glacier! We sampled the water and took many great pictures! I highly recommend this adventure. We felt very safe the entire time. Our pilot Liam was a great your guide.

Glacier Walk and Lower Glacier Landing

After the aerial part, you’ll step out onto the glacier itself. The guided glacier walk is a chance to get up close to the icy terrain—deep crevices, shimmering pools of meltwater, and textured ice that seem almost otherworldly. If weather permits, the experience is nothing short of spectacular, as many reviews highlight.

While one reviewer mentioned their glacier walk was canceled due to weather, the majority praise the experience as “awesome,” with some calling it a “trip of a lifetime.” The guide ensures safety while pointing out interesting features of the glacier, offering insight that enhances the visual feast.

Dogsledding Adventure

Next up is the dogsled ride—an activity that many travelers find deeply meaningful. The chance to meet the sled dogs, pet them, and watch them in action is a highlight for most. Several reviews emphasize how much fun it is: “Getting to pet the dogs and take pictures with them," and "the staff was really wonderful."

The sled ride itself is a memorable experience, especially if you’ve never been on one before. It’s a rare opportunity to interact closely with the animals that are so iconic to Alaskan culture. For those who missed out on the full glacier walk or want a more hands-on activity, this dogsled experience often makes the trip worth it.
