If you’re looking for an evening out that blends entertainment, scenic views, and a dash of adventure, the Jolly Roger Pirate Show and Dinner in Cancun might catch your eye. It’s a lively experience that promises a swashbuckling show, a delicious meal, and plenty of drinks — all aboard a historic replica galleon.
While it’s popular for families and groups wanting a fun night, it’s worth exploring what makes this tour tick and whether it offers good value for your money.
What we love about this experience is how it combines a theatrical pirate adventure with a relaxed dinner on the water. The ship itself, modeled on Columbus’ Santa María, provides an authentic feel that transports you back to the Golden Age of piracy. Plus, the show — with firework displays, acrobatic sword fights, and lively characters — keeps everyone entertained.
We paid way too much for what this provides the cost of tickets for 2 kids and two adults plus dock fees came in at around £450! We thought a discount had been applied but hadn’t. I questioned this at the checkin but the language ba…
The show was great Very long, expect all evening, good food, they are very kind. The boat was good and it was nice be out on the water in the evening
At first the people were a little shy but at the end of the night everyone was dancing together. The show was super fun for everyone. The only draw back was the food, it was a little meh.
One little snag to keep in mind: the experience lasts around 3.5 hours, which is a good length for most but might feel a bit long if you’re traveling with very young kids or have tight schedules.
This tour is best suited for those who enjoy lively, interactive entertainment paired with a scenic cruise. It’s particularly appealing if you’re looking for a family-friendly activity with lots of visual excitement and a good meal included. However, be aware of additional costs, like the pier tax, and the fact that it doesn’t include hotel pick-up, so consider your logistics when planning.

The Setting: A Pirate Ship Like No Other
The journey begins at the Termimal Maritima Punta Sam pier in Cancun, with check-in starting at 5:30 p.m. The ship itself is a remarkable replica of a historic galleon, inspired by Columbus’ Santa María, which adds a layer of authenticity and visual appeal. The sails, the three towering masts, and the overall design make it clear that this is a ship built for stories and spectacle.
This adventure was awesome from start to finish. The only issue was getting to the starting point! The location listed on Viator was a good 30 minute ride from the actual spot where the boat was docked. Thankfully, our driver didn't charge …
Everyone was very personable. The smiles were amazing and bigger than we had seen on this whole trip. We felt like part of a family before, during, and after the show. The show itself was fantastic. It was farther away from the hotel then I anticipated but that was on me. We could have not asked for a better time.
Absolutely amazing, the experience was surreal, acting 10/10, service 10/10, and drinks 10/10. Great for couples and family very entertaining and we had Bonnie as our server super sweet and tended to our every needs ! One of many great excursion in Cancun !
Once onboard, you’ll find the ship’s interior surprisingly comfortable — especially the air-conditioned dining areas below deck. The ambiance is lively yet relaxed, with friendly staff guiding you through the night’s activities. The crew, dressed as pirates, are engaging and add a genuine touch of fun, throwing in humor and energy that appeal to both kids and adults.
The Pirate Show: Action-Packed and Family-Friendly
The star of the night is the pirate performance, which features live actors, acrobatic fights, and pyrotechnics. We loved the way the show brings to life a spirited rivalry between Captain Black Jack and his rivals, complete with sword fights, hanging pirates, and gunpowder explosions. It’s energetic, humorous, and packed with surprises like fireworks over the sea, making it a memorable spectacle.
According to reviews, the show lasts quite a while — expect around an hour or more — and it’s designed to be suitable for families and couples alike. One guest noted that the performers “really seem to enjoy doing it,” and that the interactive nature, audience participation, and lively music make it a highlight.
Dining: Tasty Food with Options
The meal is an integral part of the experience, and it’s served below deck at large tables, creating a communal atmosphere. You have the choice between regular and premium menus. The premium option features grilled lobster tail and surf & turf, while the regular menu offers dishes like grilled salmon, filet mignon, chicken, and a kids’ menu with nuggets and fries.
Excellent! The staff was attentive and helpful; drinks and show were great! The food was fabulous. I’d recommend to anyone.
The experience was overpriced and overcrowded. They booked a company event on top of the regular visitors. Their attention was directed to them, and not so much to the others on the boat. We were given the wrong location by Viator …
This was a wonderful family experience. Our personal pirate was a bit scatterbrained with orders and also tried to seat us (a group of 7) at dinner, at a table with a family who only had 4 places to sit….The language at times was a bit strong for children (*gosh darn* could be used or "malvado" instead of the actual expletives that were said, just as a suggestion). The food was rather tasty, in actuality. The pictures were fantastic as was the memorabilia picture frame. I would suggest getting the arranged transportation because if we had not, I did not see many taxis at the pier, when we were finished late in the evening. Recommend overall.
Some reviews mention that the food is “decent” or “tasty,” with one reviewer saying, “the food was rather tasty, in actuality.” However, others noted that their meals felt somewhat pre-cooked or average, which isn’t unusual for packaged group dinners. If you’re picky about food or have specific preferences, it might be worth eating beforehand, especially for children.
One thing to keep in mind is that the dinner experience is after the show, so you might find yourself hungry if you don’t plan accordingly. Also, the dining style is somewhat communal, with many guests sharing tables, which can be a fun way to meet others but might not suit everyone.
Drinks and Souvenirs: Unlimited and Fun
Included in the price is a deluxe open bar featuring premium labels, so you can enjoy beers, cocktails, or non-alcoholic beverages throughout the night. Guests love the plenty of drinks flowing, which definitely keeps the energy high and adds to the festive pirate vibe.
There’s also an opportunity to buy souvenirs, including photos, stuffed animals, pirate swords, and bandanas. Many guests find the photos a nice keepsake, although some noted the process of locating their picture was a bit slow — a minor inconvenience in an otherwise smooth experience.
This was a fantastic experience! We went for my son's 8th birthday and he loved it, as did y 4 year old daughter. The drinks weren't great (I ordered a mojito and it came out florescent blue and tasted like mouthwash,) but other than that, no complaints. The whole thing was interactive, welcoming, and a blast! The group wasn't too big which was great, and there was a taxi service waiting when we got back to find people rides which was also a relief. The food and service were fantastic, really great night out for the family!
Having my daughter selected to participate in the show. She was so excited. The crew (pirates) put their all into the show and service for the guests. They really seem like they enjoy doing it. Great value for money and really pleased with the whole thing experience for my kids and I
I was well cared for my every need whilst onboard by COSTA he was very attentive the lobster was very good and staff friendly and easy to talk to

The Grand Finale: Fireworks and Dancing
As the evening wraps up, you’ll be treated to a fireworks display over the Caribbean Sea — a spectacular end to the adventure. Afterward, a dance party on deck allows guests to shake a leg before heading back. The lively atmosphere and friendly staff make it feel like a true celebration.
What Reviewers Say
Many guests describe the experience as “fun,” “entertaining,” and “worth the price.” One reviewer shared that their daughter was “so excited” to participate in the show, and others appreciated the interaction with the crew.
However, some reviews point out downsides — notably, extra costs like pier taxes ($20 USD per person), which aren’t included in the initial ticket price. A few travelers felt the experience was overcrowded or overpriced, especially if you’re not prepared for the length of the trip or additional fees.
One guest mentioned that the location and logistics could be tricky, with a 30-minute ride from some hotels, so arranging transportation in advance is advisable. Another pointed out that the experience can stretch over 3.5 hours, which might be an issue if you’re tired or traveling with young children.
Definitely worth it! Would definitely recommend for any age groups. Only issue was that our server was part of the show so we didn't get a lot of drinks.
It was a great night out on the sea. Action, adventure, pirates, mutiny, food and salty wenches! A great time for the whole family!
This is still a fun time and I recommend this show, particularly if you’ve never done it. Carlotta was a particularly excellent pirate, staying in character and having the energy and passion for her role that was evident in her performance. What the Captain lacked in articulation and engagement, Carlotta made up for it. Black Jack is seeming a little tired these days – it’s time for a rotation! All the staff were extremely attentive to supplying the guests with drinks – a never ending supply of drinks. Also, the special treatment that the kids received was an awesome experience for them!
Downsides Worth Considering
- The pier tax adds to the overall cost and is not included in the ticket.
- No hotel pickup or drop-off, so you’ll need to arrange your own transportation.
- The experience is weather-dependent; bad weather could cause cancellations or delays.
- The length of the tour (around 3.5 hours) might be long for some, especially children.
Who Should Book This Tour?

If you're after a family-friendly, lively evening with action, comedy, and a good meal, this tour hits the mark. It’s especially suitable for those who enjoy theatrical shows and maritime scenery. Couples and groups looking for a fun, interactive night will also find it appealing.
However, if you’re sensitive to costs or prefer a more relaxed, less structured evening, or if you’re traveling with very young children who might tire quickly, it’s worth considering whether the length and crowd size are right for you.
Overall, it’s a solid choice for anyone wanting to add a bit of pirate adventure to their Cancun trip, especially if you’re okay with some additional expenses and the possibility of weather-related changes.
