Food was delicious. Our only regrets you couldn’t catch the scenery as it was too dark. Music was a little loud and hard to visit. I would recommend to others pick a time during the daytime hours.

It was very nice, the people are very friendly. The food was not the greatest , you need to have sunglasses because the sun will blind you unless you have a middle table. The scenery was beautiful but the evening cruise goes by the castle after dark so we didn't get to see that at all an that was a bummer. But the captain was very informative about the area. Still it would have been nice to see the castle. And the band that played wasn't very good, they tried but it was two guys and the singer was a little off. But everyone was so nice. It was cold so we didn't go to the top . Next time we will take an early cruise and wait til it's warm outside

Everything was perfectly on time, the staff was exceptionally kind and attentive, and the food was absolutely delicious. Overall, it was a wonderful experience — very well organized and enjoyable from start to finish.

One thing we especially like is the combination of indoor comfort and outdoor views—you can enjoy live music and drinks inside or step outside to take in the scenery. Plus, the 3-hour cruise makes for a manageable evening without feeling rushed.

However, a potential downside is that some guests felt that the dinner service can get crowded and loud, and timing might not always align perfectly with sunset views, which could impact your overall experience.

This cruise tends to suit travelers who enjoy scenic lakeside views, live entertainment, and a relaxed, social atmosphere. If you’re looking for a special evening with good food and great vistas, this could be a top pick. That said, if you’re after a quiet, romantic sunset with unobstructed views, you might want to read further to see how this experience stacks up.

This cruise is hosted aboard the largest cruising vessel in South Lake Tahoe, the M.S. Dixie II. It’s designed as a three to four-hour experience, starting at 6:00 pm from Zephyr Cove Marina. The cruise offers a mix of spectacular views, live music, and a three-course meal, ensuring you get a well-rounded lakeside adventure.

Food is decent and plentiful. Not the best buffet ever but good enough. Would recommend that in the winter, they start the cruise at 5pm instead of 6pm. The “sunset” part of the cruise was when we were all getting in line for food – missed a lot of viewing sunset time. After dinner, there was a two man band performing on second floor dance room. Drummer was good but keyboardist and lead singer was drunk – kept messing up and forgetting words. Didn’t keep the drunk patrons from dancing but us sober ones were just laughing at the train wreck of it all. In spite of all that, the servers were great and we had a good time. Go for your first time visit – night stars are beautiful and it was …

Buffet style. Bring a jacket in October. Don’t sit at a table near the door where you board, if it’s cold outside. The lake is absolutely black at night. Get dessert with dinner. Lastly, get the eclairs as soon as you can, they are not restocked.

We took the dinner cruise which was very dark. Unfortunately we were not able to see any of the sights. I was especially looking forward to Emerald’s Bay. If you’re wanting to not just experience dinner on the lake, but would actually like to take photos and take in the scenery, my suggestion is to do this during the daytime. I’m sure it magnificent!

The Itinerary and What it Means for You

The cruise begins at Zephyr Cove Marina, where you’ll check in about 30 minutes before departure. Once on board, you’ll find yourself on an authentic paddle wheeler, which adds a charming touch to the experience. The first part of your trip takes you out onto Lake Tahoe, heading towards Emerald Bay, which is renowned for its breathtaking beauty.

Expect to be served a three-course dinner—a highlight for many. The menu is described as fabulous dining onboard, with some reviews praising the delicious food and efficient service. You’ll also have access to a full bar for purchase, and beverages like cocktails, wine, soda, and coffee are available throughout the cruise.

The Scenic Highlights

The primary draw here is the views over Emerald Bay during sunset. Guests love the phenomenal sights and the picture-perfect landscapes. Some mention that the crew is knowledgeable, adding context to the scenery, which enhances the experience.

However, a handful of guests have noted that timing can be tricky—if the cruise departs too early or too late, you might miss the actual sunset or find the views diminished.

Entire cruise was great. Food, drinks, music and sites. Crew, especially Joe were fantasik! Wonderful excursion.

Very scenic? Great way to see the lake. The food was great. The salmon and rib-eye taste great and were cooked to perfection. The band provided a great show after dinner. Enjoyed the evening. Tip take the bus they provide to the boat. The driver was great.

On October 4th, 2025, at approximately 4:35 p.m., my fiancé and I were waiting for the shuttle in front of 3 Peaks that takes guests to the dinner boat ride in Lake Tahoe. Because I have Chronic Kidney Disease and cannot stand for long periods without discomfort, I chose to wait in our parked vehicle directly in front of the shuttle stop. When the shuttle arrived, my fiancé got out first, and the driver honked and waved at him. As soon as my fiancé helped me out of the car, the driver honked again and began waving his hands impatiently, as if to say “come on.” We were no more than 12 feet away from the shuttle, and despite my condition, I walked as quickly as I could. From the time th…

One reviewer pointed out, “Sights are phenomenal the process was easy but not defined. We missed the sunset because band was playing and no one let us know.” This indicates that, while the scenery is impressive, the timing and communication might not always be perfect.

Dining Experience Inside and Out

The indoor climate-controlled seating provides a comfortable environment, especially if it’s chilly or windy. The live music adds to the lively atmosphere, making it feel like a fun, social dinner. Yet, some reviews note that during the busy dinner hour, the service can feel rushed and crowded, which might detract from the relaxed vibe some seek.

Guests have found the food to be quite good, with comments like “Food was delicious and service was friendly and efficient.” Still, for those who prefer a more intimate or quiet dinner, the crowding and noise levels could be a concern.

The Sunset and Views

Timing is crucial for those wanting the iconic sunset views. The cruise departs at 6:00 pm, which is generally around sunset time in summer, but depending on the season, some guests have found that the views are in darkness by the time the cruise ends or that they miss the sunset entirely.

Dinner was amazing! Great food and dessert. The music and vibe was perfect for a little date night. Only thing I’d change is the tour should start earlier because most of the tour it’s dark and you don’t see anything.

The entertainment was excellent with music everyone can relate to and also get up and dance to. The cruise was very fun and enjoyable. The staff was friendly and made you feel welcome and comfortable.

The dinner cruise started off very nice with a very good buffet dinner, though it was served before the cruise actually started. The Dixie II is a very nice boat and handled the wind and 1-2 foot swells very well and made for a smooth ride. As nice as the cruise started out it did not meet our expectations as it soon got very dark, which was in part because of cloud cover. By the time the boat reached Emerald Bay, it was too dark to see anything unless the spotlight was used, which did help illuminate the bay, the island and the Viking Castle. Very hard to take any pictures. We wondered why the boat’s departure is not changed at this time of year to an earlier time, such as 5 pm. It …

As one reviewer said, “We cruise out at 5:00 pm & did not see anything but dark,” highlighting the importance of choosing the right time if your main goal is sunset viewing.

Weather and Additional Considerations

The experience is weather-dependent. Most reviews are positive, but poor weather can lead to cancellations or less-than-ideal conditions. The full bar offers a range of drinks for purchase, so you can toast to the sunset or just relax during the cruise.

Parking is not included, so you’ll need to plan for that separately. Many guests recommend arriving early to avoid last-minute stress, especially during peak times.

Who Would Love This Cruise?

Lake Tahoe Evening Dinner Cruise - Who Would Love This Cruise?

This experience is well-suited for those who enjoy lakeside scenery, good food, and a lively atmosphere. It’s ideal if you’re looking for a relaxed evening with scenic views and live music, especially if you’re okay with some crowding and a bit of noise. It’s a good choice for couples, groups of friends, or anyone wanting a memorable Lake Tahoe outing.

Our tour bus driver was very polite and friendly! He gave us pointers and landmarks along the way to and fro from the cruise ship! The buffet selections were delicious and got more portions! The staff were attentive and friendly, from the servers to the bartenders! The entertainment was great! The band was great ! Had a chance to dance and met people! It was dark due to the rain coming in but we were able to get nice pictures before we embarked!
Robin H
We had a wonderful time, but if you have mobility issues, beware. It’s a long walk from the parking lot to the boat. We wish we had known.
Rachel D
The staff was amazing and very efficient. The food was delicious. The best way to see the beauty of Lake Tahoe. Worth It!!

If your main goal is to catch a perfect sunset or enjoy peaceful, intimate dining, you might find the timing and crowd more challenging. Also, if you’re traveling with children or prefer a quieter setting, it’s worth considering whether the lively, sometimes crowded environment will suit your needs.

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?

For around $150 per person, this cruise offers a combination of spectacular scenery, good food, and entertainment that many travelers find worth the price. The full bar and live music enhance the experience, making it feel like a special occasion rather than just a sightseeing trip.

However, the timing is key—if you book at the right time of year and choose your departure wisely, you’ll likely enjoy a beautiful sunset cruise that creates lasting memories.

On the downside, some reviews mention that dinner can feel rushed or crowded, and if the weather isn’t cooperating, your experience could be less than ideal. Also, the parking situation requires some planning.

This cruise fits best for those wanting an all-in-one lakeside experience—beautiful views, good food, and a fun atmosphere. If you’re prepared for the potential crowds and timing quirks, it can be a very enjoyable way to spend an evening on Lake Tahoe.
