From what we’ve gathered from countless happy travelers, it offers a mix of adventure, history, and local flavor — all packed into an approximately 8-hour day.
Whether you’re a history buff, a thrill-seeker, or someone simply craving a unique experience in Mexico City’s surroundings, this tour promises a memorable journey.
What really stands out are the stunning panoramic views during the hot air balloon ride and the knowledgeable guidance that helps bring the ancient site of Teotihuacán to life. Plus, the private transportation ensures a comfortable, hassle-free experience from start to finish.
The highlight of our Mexico City was this it's a early morning one but I think it's worth getting up early one day on your holiday, the tour guide and driver both were very good and the best was breakfast
Wonderful in every way. Transportation was perfect, balloon ride was magnificent, Teotihuacan site tour was awesome. Huge thanks to Jacqueline and Fernando and our balloon pilot for providing a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
A great experience from start to finish – private transportation with friendly driver (Carlos) and tour guide (Aleysia) . It was our first balloon ride and it was fantastic- felt very safe and crew appeared to be very skilled and all local staff were very friendly and welcoming. We are vegetarian and we were fortunate that the local restaurant where we ate breakfast after ballon ride had vegetarian options and had a English speaking staff member that understood our dietary requirements- I think name of the restaurant was as Azteca. I highly recommend the tour operator – Excellent Travel
That said, it’s worth mentioning that the actual flight is weather-dependent, and some travelers have noted that the extended parts of the tour—including souvenir stops—can feel a bit rushed or overly commercial.
This tour appears best suited for those who value a high-quality, well-organized experience with a touch of adventure, and aren’t bothered by an early start. If you’re ready for a full day of breathtaking views, cultural insight, and excellent service, this could be a fantastic choice.

Starting Early for a Big Day
The tour kicks off bright and early, with pick-up between 5:00 and 5:30 AM. This might seem brutal, but there’s a good reason—you’re heading out before sunrise, making the most of the cooler morning air and the best light for your photos. Early mornings are common for balloon rides, and travelers consistently appreciate the added magic of a sunrise departure.
Private Transport and Comfort
Once picked up, you’ll be whisked away in a private vehicle, which is a huge plus. This means no crowded shuttles, and you can relax or chat with your guide during the 45-minute to 1-hour drive to Teotihuacán. Many reviews praise the drivers for their professionalism and friendliness, with some mentioning specific guides like Carlos or Vladimir who go the extra mile to make the day special.
What a helluva awesome way to celebrate my birthday. Woke up early on July 4th (fair skies, light wind, 59 degrees) for 5am pickup at our hotel. Drove north to balloon launch spot. Met two other couples and we 6 went up w Alejandro in the heavenly balloon trip drifting over the awe inspiring Pyramids of Teotihuacan. Smooth landing, then off thru the whole ruins on foot (they have been beautifully restored) with a fantastic tour guide, Howard Cantellano. Anthropology whiz and lots of great facts and stories about the past civilization and the modern day excavations. He led us through everything we were allowed to enter and his attention to detail made this such an enjoyable trip. Spanish and …
Fantastic experience! Really appreciated the guide, driver & communication. Breathtaking balloon ride, very informative pyramid guided tour and delicious breakfast. TOTALLY worth the cost and rising 45 min. earlier than usual because of a demonstration in our hotel’s neighborhood, which our guides, Howard & Carlis. anticipated and warned us about. 5-STARS!
This was a magical experience everyone should have. We floated above the pyramids with dozens of other balloons and it felt like a dream. Our guide wanted to spend longer at the pyramids than we were interested in, but he was receptive to a slightly shorter stay there. The balloon was the highlight and it was cool to go from flying over the pyramids to being in the ground exploring them. You also go to a buffet restaurant for breakfast that was surprisingly good (a little busy from the balloon and pyramid traffic). We were a group of friends celebrating our 50th birthdays and it could not have been a better way to do it!
Arriving at the Balloon Port
Your first stop is the balloon port in San Francisco Mazapa. It’s a laid-back scene—local and welcoming, with a chance to observe the balloons being inflated. The guide and crew are there, preparing for the flight. Many travelers have highlighted the safety and skill of the crew, which helps ease any nerves. You’ll get a brief briefing and time to snap photos before your flight.
The Hot Air Balloon Ride
The core of this experience is, of course, the hot air balloon flight, lasting about 40-50 minutes, depending on weather conditions. During the flight, you’ll float over Teotihuacán, with incredible views of the Pyramid of the Sun and the Moon, as well as the surrounding valleys.
Travelers describe this as a “dreamlike” or “magical” experience, floating gently above the ancient landscape while taking in the sunrise or the changing light.
One review captures this well: “We floated above the pyramids with dozens of other balloons and it felt like a dream.” The sense of serenity and the panoramic vistas make this part of the tour a standout.
The balloon flight was spectacular. The pilot incredible. And car driver was also great. Bring water.
My husband and I had an amazing time on this trip!!! Monica and Etienne were so fun and knowledgeable. They were flexible, allowing us to go at our own pace at the different stops. I cannot recommend this excursion enough. I know it is more expensive than some of the other balloon tours but it is worth it as you can really make the excursion your own.
A must do when in Mexico City. Awesome experience for me and my family. Howard (guide) and Carlos (driver) were the best. Very patient especially with my son who has a disability. Thankful for these two for making our experience memorable and stress free.

Celebrating the Flight
After landing, the crew will handle the balloon, and you’ll have a chance to celebrate with a traditional toast and receive your flight certificate—a nice touch to commemorate the experience. Photos are taken at this stage, and many reviewers mention how memorable the pictures are.
Breakfast and Rest
Next, you’ll head to a local restaurant for breakfast, which is often praised for being satisfying and tasty. It’s a great way to recharge after an early start, and many travelers appreciate the opportunity to enjoy authentic Mexican fare in a relaxed setting. The breakfast lasts about an hour and a half.
Guided Tour of Teotihuacán
The highlight for history enthusiasts will be the guided visit to the Teotihuacán archaeological zone. With about 1.5 hours allocated, you’ll explore the grand pyramids, learn about their significance, and uncover some of the mysteries surrounding this ancient city. The guides are noted to be well-informed and engaging, making history accessible and interesting.
Some reviews mention that guides like Eloy or Ginny go out of their way to ensure a personalized experience, even allowing tailored pacing or photo stops. The archaeological zone itself is awe-inspiring—imposing pyramids rising against the sky—that make the journey worthwhile.
Great morning out and well organized. The balloon trip was magical and Howard gave my wife and I a great history lesson. I liked it so much I would do it again.
The balloon ride was the highlight of our trip. Beautiful views of the pyramids & all the other balloons. Our drivers Carlos & Vanessa were great… on time picking us up, pleasant, helpful, took pictures for us, & made a photo for each of us (5). We ate a later breakfast at 1030, per our request after the private guided tour of Teotihuacan by Eloy (who was incredibly knowledgeable). The pyramids were less crowded because we went before we ate breakfast. The restaurant was Rancho Aztec & the buffet was exceptional with a wide assortment of home made Mexican dishes as well as, eggs, soup, & Mexican sweet rolls. Amazing!
It was a great experience from the start. The communication before the tour was efficient and they picked us up at the hotel with an experienced driver and comfortable car (you want this if you’re waking up 4am for the ride). When we got there it was a quick process to get to what mattered (the “globo”). The balloon ride was great – and our pilot was clearly experienced. You could tell plenty of balloons going far from the location (“wrong air current” we were told) while we went smoothly to the archeological site with great views all around. Our guide to the archeological site was really knowledgeable and nice (Sergio), we came out of it knowing a bit more of Mexico’s history. B…
Return Journey
The day wraps up with some free time to shop for souvenirs or use the restroom before heading back to Mexico City. The return trip is roughly an hour, and you’ll be dropped off at your hotel or accommodation.
What Makes This Tour Stand Out

The Views and Experience
The hot air balloon ride offers a rare perspective of Teotihuacán that’s hard to match. Floating silently over the pyramids, you get a 360-degree view of the sprawling site and distant mountains. Fantastic experience. Excellent service. Highly recommend. Very professional driver Etienne. Our tour guide was Eloy. Simply the best. Eloy is extremely knowledgeable and a beautiful human being.
Wonderful views of the pyramids! The balloon portion went really well. Just the right duration. It was very very cold the morning, but they sell sweaters, scarf, gloves etc there. The guide at the pyramids after was really friendly and knowledgeable.
Hot air balloon ride is amazing, we are lucky that the crater has only 3 people so we are able to take alot of amazing pictures. Our guide Jeanie and driver EDmundo are friendly and transport is on time. The best thing about Jeanie is she is knowledgeable and hospitable. She gave us the option to choose whether to go shopping or head back. Overall i highly recommend.
Price and Value
At $362.45 per person, the tour doesn’t come cheap, but considering the inclusions—hot air balloon flight, private transportation, breakfast, guided archaeological tour, flight certificate, and photos—it’s a solid value.
