What really stands out to us are the opportunities to learn about Maori traditions at Cape Reinga and the unique experience of driving along Ninety Mile Beach, which not all tours offer. Plus, the chance to try sandboarding adds a fun element that many find memorable. On the flip side, this is a 11-hour trip, so a certain level of stamina and patience is needed, especially if you’re not used to long bus rides.

If a long day on a bus sounds daunting, be prepared for a relaxed pace with plenty of stops and opportunities to stretch out.
Very convenient way to be able to travel around Cape Reinga. Plenty of rest stops and sights to see. Drive over beach was great!
The day was absolutely brilliant but spoilt by the air conditioning not working on the 4 x 4 Coach. The heat was unbearable and you could not even open the sky lights as they were for emergency exit use only. The Guide, George, was fantastic and could not be faulted in any way. It seems a shame that a tour which was 12 hours long, nearly all of which was spent on the Coach travelling, coupled with the cost of the tour that the air conditioning was not working. The Guide told us this is not the first time it has not been working – Shame!!
George was a fantastic guide and it's a great trip to Cape Reinga and 90 Mile beach! If we could improve anything it's a very long day trip and maybe less pick up points would make it a bit shorter? Lunch was delicious and at a fabulous beach. Thanks again!

Many reviews highlight how the trip is far more than just sightseeing — it’s about connecting with the land, the sea, and the stories that shape the area. The journey along Ninety Mile Beach is a particularly memorable part, where a purpose-built bus allows you to travel on sand that few other vehicles can access. The experience of feeling the wind and sand as the bus glides along the shoreline is something many remember vividly.
What to Expect at Cape Reinga

The highlight for most is Cape Reinga itself, where the spirits are said to depart and travel home. The spot is a blend of natural grandeur and spiritual significance, with panoramic views of the meeting point of the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean. You’ll get an opportunity to walk down to the lighthouse, take photos, and soak in the powerful atmosphere.
One of the standout features here is the storytelling from guides, which many reviews praise highly. They offer insights into Maori traditions, making the visit more meaningful than just a photo stop. You might find the walk to the lighthouse involves a steep hill, so fitness levels could influence your comfort during that part.
The Tour Along Ninety Mile Beach

Driving along Ninety Mile Beach is a major draw. This stretch of sand is famous, and this tour allows you to experience it on a purpose-designed vehicle. The reviews consistently mention how much fun it is to ride along the beach, with some even trying sandboarding if conditions allow.
Sandboarding is a hit among travelers — a bit of a thrill, especially if you’re doing it for the first time. You’ll need to bring a change of clothes for this part, as getting sandy and possibly dusty is inevitable. The reviews mention that the sand dunes are excellent for a quick slide and that the experience is more than just a novelty; it’s a highlight for many.
The trip was well organised, lunch was very good and the destinations were beautiful. Our guide, George was well informed and entertaining.
Fantastic tour – got to see lots and learn lots. George was so welcoming and kind, and made everyone feel part of the family. Lunch spot was beautiful, and we got a decent amount of time at each place (including Cape Reinga itself). It's a long day, but it's well broken up with the various stops and there was a good mix of tour + quiet time on the coach itself. Would definitely recommend.
Tanya our guide and coach driver was excellent. She coped with the small problem with the coach which struggled a bit uphill. Scenery great. 90 mie beach phenomenal. Lunch very adequate.
The Lunch Break and Other Stops
A well-timed lunch at a scenic beachside spot offers a break and a chance to refuel. Many travelers find the included meal quite satisfying, with some describing it as delicious and locally prepared. There are also tea stops along the way, where you can purchase snacks or drinks if you prefer.
Throughout the day, there are multiple stops designed to give everyone a chance to relax, take photos, and enjoy the scenery. This thoughtful pacing is appreciated by those who don’t want to feel rushed.
