If you’re planning a trip to Salzburg and want to see some of Austria’s most iconic sights without the hassle of organizing multiple trips yourself, the Salzburg Super Saver: Hallstatt & Original Sound of Music Tour might catch your eye. This full-day experience offers a neat combo: a visit to the picture-perfect town of Hallstatt and a tour through the film locations from The Sound of Music.

While it’s not perfect—being a long day with some repetitive parts—it’s packed with scenic views and guides that make it worthwhile for many travelers.

What we really like about this tour is how it combines two popular attractions into one reasonably priced package. You’ll enjoy stunning scenery and informative guides at each stop, and the added bonus of some great photo ops. On the flip side, the tour can feel a bit rushed, especially if you’re hoping for a more leisurely experience or want to explore every site thoroughly.

This is a combination of two separate 1/2 day tours offered by Panorama Tours – a vist to Hallstatt in the morning, returning to Salzburg around 1:30pm, then a 2pm Sound of Music tour at 2pml The morning portion was scenic and a lot of driving. The afternoon portion was on a bigger tour bus to visit a few spots that appeared in the movie. Both tours were fun, with the afternoon one being more cheerful.

Hallstatt was incredible . The Sound of Music had an amazing guide who sang and extremely detailed. However , these are 2 separate tours with a quick 15 minute break and a lot of driving back and forth on the same routes. Wasted 2 hours that could be used for lunch or meal break .

This was a great tour, our guide shared so much information, lead sing slings for each location, this company does tours very well!

This is definitely a trip best suited for those who don’t mind busy days and appreciate seeing a lot in a short amount of time.

If you’re a fan of The Sound of Music or eager to explore Austria’s charming lakeside towns, this tour hits the mark. It’s also suitable for travelers who want a guided day with minimal planning, and don’t mind a full schedule.

However, if you’re someone who prefers slow-paced sightseeing or has a specific site they really want to spend more time on, you might want to consider splitting this into two separate days.

The Scenic Drive to Hallstatt

Your day kicks off at 8:15 am in Salzburg, with a roughly 1.5-hour drive through the beautiful Austrian countryside. The route passes through Fuschl, St. Gilgen, Bad Ischl, and Bad Goisern, giving you quick glimpses of quaint towns and lush landscapes. This part is generally appreciated for its scenic beauty—an excellent warm-up for what’s to come.

Exploring Hallstatt

Once in Hallstatt, you’re given 2.5 hours to wander the town’s charming streets, enjoy a coffee, or visit the museums. This is plenty of time to soak in the views of the lake, take some photos, and explore the town at your own pace.

Some reviews highlight how beautiful Hallstatt is, even on overcast days. However, because of the short stay, you won’t have time to visit the salt mines, which are not included in this tour.

I’ll first say that, while I like the sound of music well enough, seeing the locations it was filmed was night my purpose for booking this experience. I really just wanted to see the alpine lake towns. With that in mind, I was a bit disappointed to learn after getting on the tour bus that I could have booked a lake tour without the sound of music portion. In fact, the way this tour is set up, you take the lake tour first, then return to Salzburg and get on a separate bus with separate guides to do the sound of music tour. Having already paid for both tours, I got on the bus anyway. All that said, both tours and their guides (shoutout to Sino and Leo) were great. The alpine lakes were ever…

Had 2 great tour guides. Jose to Halstadt and Birgit for Sound of Music tour. They really love their job! Wish we had more time at the church and gift shops.
Stan G
This was a fantastic trip. The guide was wonderful and the scenery was spectacular. Couldn’t ask for a nicer time. I highly recommend this tour.

The Skywalk Experience

For those wanting an extra perspective, there’s the option to ascend via funicular to the Hallstatt Skywalk. It’s about an hour’s trip up to an observation deck 1,100 feet above the rooftops, offering sweeping panoramic views of the town and surrounding mountains.

Remember, this isn’t included in the ticket price, and weather or timing can affect availability. If you’re an avid photographer or just love a good view, this is worth considering.

Scenic Return Route

On the way back, the tour follows a different scenic route—about 1.5 hours—passing through Gosau, Russbach, and Abtenau. This route offers more stunning vistas of the Salzkammergut region, though some reviews mention it feeling a bit repetitive if you’re paying close attention to scenery. It’s a good way to maximize your sightseeing, especially if you’re keen on landscape photography.

Here's some more things to do in Salzburg

The Sound of Music Tour

Arriving back in Salzburg around 1:45 pm, the second leg begins: the Original Sound of Music Tour. The tour covers iconic filming locations like Leopoldskron Palace, the famous gazebo at Mondsee, and the gardens of Schloss Hellbrunn. You’ll also get a chance to stop at Lake Leopoldskron, mirroring the palace, and enjoy a quick photo session.

The Famous Gazebo at Mondsee

One of the highlights is visiting the "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" gazebo, where the memorable kissing scene was filmed. It’s a popular spot, and many reviews mention how fun it is to see these movie landmarks in person. The tour lasts about 2 hours, with some stops being brief but packed with insights from enthusiastic guides.

Additional Sightseeing

Another noteworthy stop is at St. Gilgen, perched above Lake Wolfgang—offering a stunning overview of the Alpine Mountain Range. Then, there’s a leisurely hour at Mondsee, where you can visit the basilica where the wedding scene was shot, or grab a coffee before heading back to Salzburg.

How Does It Feel in Practice?

Many travelers comment on the expertise of the guides—calling them knowledgeable, friendly, and humorous. This makes the long day go by more smoothly and keeps the experience engaging. For instance, one review mentions how “Connor was a fabulous tour guide and the sing-alongs were fun,” adding a cheerful note to the day.

The transportation is generally comfortable, and group sizes are capped at 60, so it feels intimate enough for a guided experience without feeling crowded. Timing is tight, especially during the afternoon, and some reviews note the experience can be somewhat rushed—particularly at the scenic stops or in bad weather.

The Value for Money

At $145.13 per person, this tour offers a lot of ground covered, with a mix of cultural, cinematic, and scenic highlights. It’s a good deal considering the transportation, guided commentary, and the coverage of multiple attractions. However, keep in mind it’s a packed schedule; if you prefer a more relaxed exploration, splitting this into two days might be better.

The Downsides

A few reviews point out some areas for improvement. There’s mention of overlapping scenery, which might bore repeat scenery fans, and long hours that can be tiring. Some travelers found the timing to be less ideal, especially if they’re sensitive to sunset or darkness, as some parts of the tour are in late afternoon or early evening.

Also, the Skywalk and salt mines are not included, which may disappoint those wanting to dive deeper into Hallstatt’s attractions.

Final Thoughts: Is This Tour Right for You?

This combined tour really shines if you’re after a comprehensive day packed with iconic sights, excellent guides, and stunning scenery. It’s ideal for those who appreciate guided experiences that include a mix of natural beauty and cinematic history. If you’re comfortable with a long day and don’t mind some busy moments, this can be a memorable way to get a lot of Austria in one shot.

However, if you’re someone who prefers slow-paced sightseeing, or if you’re eager to explore each site in depth, you might find this tour a bit rushed. Also, if your schedule allows, splitting the activities across two days could give you more time to savor each place.

This tour offers great value for money and has received many positive reviews for its guides, scenery, and overall organization. If you’re eager to tick major Salzburg highlights off your list with minimal fuss, it’s a solid choice.
