Exploring Lucerne from Zurich: An Honest Look at the Day Trip Including Lake Cruise

If you’re considering a day trip from Zurich to Lucerne, you’ll find plenty of options to choose from. This particular tour, offered by Best of Switzerland Tours, promises a mix of scenic rides, city exploration, and a cruise on Lake Lucerne.

As someone who’s been around the block with Swiss excursions, I’ll share a detailed and balanced look at what this experience really offers—so you can decide if it’s worth your time and money.

Mindy S
Very easy to find the bus station to get on our tour bus. The tour guide gave us a nice overview of the area and took us on a small guided walk to the famous wooden bridge in Lucerne. She provided us with a map of other tourist spots around town and showed us where the boat launch was located. The boat ride was nice and it gave a good overview of the lake and some of its history. Our return bus arrived on time and gave us a comfortable ride home. Please note you are left alone to tour on your own in Lucerne. No one guides you through town. We enjoyed this because we love to check out new locations on our own at our own pace.

Lots of “on your own time” in Lucerne. We had over 6 hrs to explore. The coach ride was well narrated into town and the lake cruise was beautiful on a comfortable quiet boat.
Laura C
Our bus ride was comfortable and informative, and our guide was so helpful and kind. The cruise on Lake Lucerne was absolutely stunning, and you still have plenty of free time during the day to explore the city, eat lunch and do some shop

Two things we genuinely like about this tour are the breathtaking scenery during the coach ride and the insightful guidance from guides who make the journey more engaging. Plus, the lake cruise adds a relaxing highlight to the day, giving you a chance to enjoy the water and mountain views in peace.

On the flip side, a few potential drawbacks deserve a mention. The tour’s structure means you’ll have quite a bit of free time in Lucerne—about six hours—which might feel a little too open for some. Also, if you’re looking for a highly guided, packed itinerary, this might feel a bit light on the details.

That said, it’s a good fit for travelers who enjoy a balance of guided and independent exploring, especially if you’re comfortable with navigating some parts on your own.

This tour seems best suited for visitors who want a straightforward, scenic day out without feeling rushed. It’s especially appealing if you’re keen on soaking in Lake Lucerne’s tranquil waters and exploring the charming streets at your own pace.

Good day trip, nice city, easy tour for the masses to enjoy and not be confused over. Guide was good. We had zero issues.

So this wasn’t quite what we expected. We wanted to visit Lucerne and thought doing so through an arranged excursion would be better than going ourselves by train. As it turned out, we were grouped, for convenience sake, with the larger tour heading up to Mt. Pilatus. There were just a few of us doing only the Lucerne part so when the bus arrived in Lucerne, our “guide” walked the group to the Chapel Bridge, gave a brief overview, then set us loose. Then the larger group heading up the mountain went back to the bus. Lucerne is a beautiful city but we were there for too many hours (about 6) for being on our own. The boat ride on Lake Lucerne was nice, but you really don’t go tha…

We enjoyed the city. Easy to walk around and take in the sights. The cafe’s by the water were comfortable for an afternoon bite to eat.

Thanks Adolpho and Bernadette for your guidance. Thanks to the bus driver and the staff at the booth.

The boat ride was exceptional. The tour guide was very informative about Zurich and the area between Zurich and Lucerne. She wasn’t familiar with the boat ride so we needed to investigate the logistics ourselves. I feel that a better communication was needed.
Maria F
The tour guide was very knowledgeable. The bus ride was very enjoyable. The scenery on the way to Lucerne was breathtaking. The tour guide was making comments through out the bus ride. We had enough time to enjoy the beautiful streets of Lucerne, the lake cruise, do some shopping and have lunch.

This was a wonderful tour. I liked it bc we got information of Zurich and Lucerne. But One of the organizers forgot to provide us with the map on what to see in Lucerne. Our tour guide asked everyone to take a picture of her map instead. This tour is briefly guided so you are on your own with tips on what to do and how to get your boat tour ticket. The lion was not visible due to repairs as of May 5th. No one mentioned this during the tour.

The Pros and Cons Based on Real Experiences

What Travelers Usually Love

Many reviewers praise the guides and the stunning scenery. As one reviewer said, “The scenery on the way to Lucerne was breathtaking,” and the guide’s commentary makes the ride informative.

The boat cruise is consistently described as “beautiful,” “relaxing,” and “a highlight of the day.” Tourists also appreciate the value—for around $120, it includes transportation, a city overview, and a lakeside cruise.

The Downsides to Consider

Some travelers felt the free time was insufficient or poorly organized. One reviewer noted, “We were just dropped at Lucerne and picked up after 6 hours... no guided tour.” Others felt the trip was too loosely structured and that the value didn’t justify the cost, especially if they could do similar activities independently.

Several reviews pointed out that the long bus ride eats into limited sightseeing time and that the lack of detailed guidance could leave some feeling a bit lost.

Who Will Enjoy This Tour?

This trip is ideal for casual travelers who want a relaxing day out without heavy planning. It's perfect if you enjoy scenic drives, leisurely exploration, and a calm boat ride. If you prefer highly structured or guided sightseeing, or if you seek a packed itinerary, this might not be the best fit.

Arrival and City Orientation

Once in Lucerne, the brief coach drive introduces you to sights like the Chapel Bridge and Jesuit Church. The guide’s commentary helps set the scene, but after that, you’re mostly on your own. Several reviews mention that the short city overview is helpful but doesn’t substitute for independent exploration.

Free Time in Lucerne

Six hours sounds like a lot, but the actual experience varies. Some visitors use the time effectively, visiting museums or landmarks, while others feel it’s too much or not enough. Lake Cruise Experience

The 1-hour cruise on Lake Lucerne is a relaxing way to enjoy Switzerland’s natural beauty. The yacht's elegant design, combined with the audio narration, provides a peaceful escape and excellent photo opportunities.

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?

Lucerne Day Trip from Zurich Including Lake Lucerne Cruise - Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?

This tour offers a solid balance of travel, sightseeing, and leisure. The combination of a scenic coach ride, a brief city orientation, and a boat cruise makes for a relaxed day out. The scenery views are stunning, and the guides are generally knowledgeable, which adds value.

However, the free time can be a double-edged sword. If you prefer a tightly scheduled tour with lots of guided stops, this might seem too unstructured. Conversely, if you’re comfortable with some autonomy and want to soak in the tranquil beauty of Lucerne at your own pace, this tour fits well.

At roughly $120 per person, the price is reasonable, especially considering the included transportation and cruise. But be aware that some guests feel they could replicate the experience more economically on their own, especially if they are comfortable navigating public transport and planning their own day.
