If you’re cruising into Akureyri and looking to make the most of your short time on land, the Goðafoss and Forest Lagoon tour offers a solid mix of nature’s drama and relaxing comfort. We’ve come across this experience and found it to be an engaging way to see some of Iceland’s highlights without spending a whole day away from port.
What really caught our attention are the majestic views at Goðafoss—one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls—and the peaceful, geothermal-heated Forest Lagoon, a lesser-known gem that feels like a cozy retreat. Plus, the tour is praised for its knowledgeable guides and smooth organization.
That said, with only four hours, it’s a quick trip, which might mean limited time at each stop—something worth keeping in mind if you’re hoping to linger longer.
our guide Sieggy, was great! a native of Akureyri and gave us lots of local info. the Forest Lagoon was so relaxing and we had plenty of time to spend there. we also got the option of being taken back to the ship or let off in town to explore. we explored and walked back to the ship (about 10 mins). Beautiful area, really enjoyed it.
I liked the tour the most because it was a smaller group in a new van and the guide was a local English speaking person but what I was extremely disappointed about was the pick up point there was no clear sign no one around at the two meet up points while other tours were just right outside of the ship
Very fun, great guide, waterfall was incredible as well as the forest lagoon

The Itinerary: What You Can Expect
This tour is designed for cruise ship passengers and those in the Akureyri area who want an efficient way to see some of Iceland’s most photogenic spots. Starting with pick-up at Akureyri port, the journey begins with a scenic drive along Eyjafjörður Fjord, one of Iceland’s longest and most beautiful fjords. The drive alone is a treat, offering views of snow-capped mountains, charming villages, and vast waters.
The first major stop is Goðafoss, a waterfall that’s often called the “Waterfall of the Gods.” Standing at about 39 feet tall, it’s a stunning cascade that’s perfect for photos and simply gazing at Iceland’s raw power. The guide—based on reviews—seems to be quite knowledgeable, providing interesting facts and giving the group plenty of time to explore and take pictures. One reviewer noted that the guide (Hogni) “interacted well with guests” and “allowed plenty of time to stop for pictures and ask questions,” which makes a difference when you’re trying to capture the moment.
After spending time at Goðafoss, the tour continues back towards Akureyri, with the highlight being the Forest Lagoon. Located in a serene forest setting with views over Eyjafjörður, this geothermal spa is described as a peaceful oasis—perfect if you’re looking to unwind. The Lagoon’s unique location among birch and pine trees makes it feel more secluded than some of the busier hot springs. You’ll get about an hour here, which seems to be enough time according to reviews to relax, soak, and enjoy the surroundings.
The Experience of the Stops
- Goðafoss: The waterfall is visually striking, especially if you arrive early or late in the day when the crowds are fewer. The water’s power and the surrounding rugged landscape make it a memorable stop. Reviewers mention it as a very beautiful spot worth the time dedicated to exploring.
- Forest Lagoon: This is the real highlight for many—an opportunity to enjoy geothermal waters in a tranquil setting with stunning views. The Spa’s setting among trees and overlooking the fjord is a refreshing change from the more commercialized hot springs elsewhere.
Transportation and Group Size
The tour’s transportation is comfortable, and the group size seems manageable, making it easy to move around and get good photos. Given that it’s a guided tour, you won’t have to worry about navigation, which is handy when time is limited.
More Great Tours NearbyThe Cost and Value
At $196 per person, this tour sits at a moderate price point. Considering it includes guided commentary, port pickup, and entry to the Lagoon, it offers reasonable value for travelers wanting a convenient and curated experience. If you add up the cost of transportation, entrance fees, and a guide on your own, it could easily be more expensive, so the package is quite competitive.
Our guide Ean (apologies if I say it wrong) was excellent. He was there waiting for us and where he said he would be, displaying a sign with my name on. He was very pleasant and informative, explaining all about Iceland and the surroundings area. The tour and tour guide is highly recommended.
Guide Siggi was excellent throughout the whole tour. There was only 4 of us in the minibus. He stopped at a couple of viewing points on way to godafoss and gave us lots of information about akureyri, godofoss and the forest lagoon. The waterfall and the forest lagoon were both lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed our trip. I would definitely recommend it! Much cheaper than p & o for the same trip.
Our guide (Hogni if o recall correct spelling) was a knowledgeable and interacted with the guests, allowing for plenty of time to stop for pictures and ask questions. The tour was well organized and easy to find amongst all of the busses at the cruise pier. He allowed plenty of time to explore Gudafoss which was very beautiful. We had booked a similar tour with our cruise line but cancelled and did this one instead as we wanted to try the Forrest Lagoon and we were not disappointed. He dropped us off at the Forrest lagoon and took part of the group to the botanical gardens as the tour was split. Got an hour at the Lagoon which was ample time and he came back to pick up. Totally recommend thi…
