Two wonderful places in one tour. Make sure you book the fully guided tour options – the Alberobello tour in particular is absolutely brilliant with one of the best tour guides we've ever had. You really will get the most out of it with a guide. Matera too is fascinating and the guide here was also just excellent. It's a long day – but well worth it!
Candido N
Well worth it and an amazing experience. We didn't get a guide due to a bad back and wanted to rest if needed. The QR code for a map on the pamphlet given at start of tour was easy to use.

A full day and a day filled with great sights! Alberobello was beautiful and the best was yet to come with Matera.

One thing to keep in mind is that the tour can feel a bit simplified—you get plenty of time to wander but less of a guided narrative, especially in Alberobello. Still, this setup works best for travelers who appreciate independence but don’t want to worry about logistics.

This tour is ideal if you’re after a balance of sightseeing and free time. It suits those who enjoy exploring at their own pace, whether you’re a solo traveler, a couple, or even a small group. If you’re okay with a longer day (about 10 hours) and are comfortable with self-guided walks, this could fit your style perfectly.

The Alberobello Experience: The Trulli Town

The first stop, Alberobello, is famous for its trulli—small, limestone houses with conical roofs that look like they belong in a fairy tale. The town’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site underscores its uniqueness.

The bus trip was great except the guide in Matera, he was unprofessional, no Guid ID & coloured flag/umbrella, no excursion’s plan, just running & forth & back, I was taking a picture of the historic Church, he just disappeared with the remaining 7 people, ( initially it was 15 people one hour earlier), he didn’t keep track of his group. He lost me after an hour of 3 hour excursion. I turn around and he disappeared, later on the bus, one lady told me that they went down the side stairs to continue running after guide without excursion flag. It was very disappointing part of lost time, money, history knowledge in English language being so far from Bari & being lost in Matera 👎🏻

The bus trip was well organized and the tour guide at Matera was excellent. Well worth the cost. Everything was as advertised

It was a smooth journey overall, but the MUSIC ON BUS IS TOO LOUD. It was a full day trip and would be nice to have some quiet time to rest on the bus instead of listening to the very loud music. Also tiring to talk over the music with my partner on the bus. I hope this can be improved for other travellers in the future.

For around three hours, you’ll have free rein to explore the streets lined with souvenir shops, charming cafes, and the most iconic sights like the Siamese Trulli, Trullo Sovrano, and the Church of Sant’Antonio da Padova.

What’s particularly nice is that many travelers find the self-guided approach provides just enough information to appreciate the town’s architecture and history without feeling overwhelmed.

One reviewer mentioned that, “We did not use the guided tour but the booklet provided was more than adequate to give us the information on each place,” which suggests the materials are thoughtfully designed for independent explorers.

However, some reviews hint that without a guide, it can be easy to feel a bit lost in the maze of similar-looking trulli, especially if you’re not familiar with the layout. Still, with your brochure and a little curiosity, you’ll get a good sense of the town’s charm.

This was a very exciting tour, although we were on our own touring Alberobello, I haven't seen anything like it. The small and very uniquely built houses with its cone shape roofs, it was an amazing view. Very narrow and wildly going streets leading to all other parts of the town, this was walking in the a different world all together. And Matera was even more exciting the cave city, our guide was very friendly and amazingly knowledgeable about the history of the city and its structure. we have seen things with him I did not expected to see. The views were breathtaking. This was an amazing tour.

Excellent day tour of Alberobello and Matera by coach with very good guides at both locations. Comfortable coach and a very friendly driver Danielle (hopefully spelt that correct) who was very good at informing us whre to come back and at what time to be back at the bus. At Alberobello we also had a very good olive tasting guide including information about the various types of olive oils and their purposes at a specialist shop. So impressed we bought some oil, and specialist buscuits to take back to the UK. Matera was absolutely an fantastic experience, and guide (a local resident) was very friendly and informative guide. Highly recommend this tour. The communication about the tour in adv…

Lots of walking at both locations. Hills and stairs could be an issue for some. After a well done tour the guide in Matera ‘abandoned’ guests with minimal instructions to return to bus pick up area.

The Journey to Matera: The City of Sassi

After a few hours in Alberobello, the tour continues to Matera, often called the city of caves. Here, natural caves have been carved into the rock, forming the Sassi districts. You’ll have around four hours to wander and take in sights like the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, the Rock Church of St. Anthony the Abbot, and Casa Noha.

The highlight, according to many reviews, is the self-guided exploration that allows you to soak up the atmosphere at your own pace. A reviewer noted, “The visit is a must-do, buses are very comfortable and prompt,” and highlighted the benefit of having plenty of time to discover the town’s narrow alleyways and dramatic vistas.

While the brochure provides basic information, some travelers felt a guided tour in Alberobello would have added depth, especially since the town’s streets are small and similar, which can be confusing without guidance. In contrast, the guided component in Matera seemed to be more appreciated, with several reviewers praising their guides’ helpfulness.

The Practical Side: Transportation and Timing

The bus itself is a highlight for many. With reviews praising the cleanliness, comfort, and professionalism of the driver, the transportation aspect is generally stress-free. The starting point at Piazza Eroi del Mare is easy to reach, and being able to leave your luggage on board adds convenience.

What we expected. It was as stated a bus trip getting you from A to B. If you wanted more you had to pay extra. It was good for the convenience of being dropped off and given a time to be back and being able to do your own thing.

Both Alberobelo and Matera were interesting trips. Alberobelo is an unusual and novel experience. Matera on the other hand is steeped in history, some of it is quite dark. Both trips were good. The guides were informative. The trips were definitely worth the time and the money. Bus driver was competent and safe.
Michael R
The experience lived up to the description. Alberobello is charming, and Matera is an amazing time capsule of history. The day ran on schedule, and Pasquale our tour guide in Matera was very knowledgable and enthusiastic. He personalized the experience for a diverse group of travelers.

The tour’s duration of around 10 hours might seem long, but most reviews agree that the pace is manageable. You get sufficient time in each town, with enough flexibility to explore on your own. The schedule is tight but not rushed, which is key to making the most of such a day.

Considerations and Potential Downsides

Not everyone loved the experience equally. A common critique is that Alberobello can feel a bit repetitive—once you’ve seen a few trulli, the rest look similar. Some reviewers expressed a desire for a guided tour there, especially to learn more about the history and architecture, rather than wandering alone with only a brochure.

Another point to note is the lack of an official guide during the town visits—for those who prefer guided commentary, this might feel limiting. However, many found the brochures and QR codes sufficient, especially considering the quite affordable price point of around $64 per person.

A few comments pointed out logistical hiccups, like missing a bracelet or confusion about paid guides, but these seem to be exceptions rather than the rule. Generally, the organization and communication received high praise, with travelers feeling the trip was well-managed.

No stress . All organised. Very enjoyable scenery. No need to think of driving difficult roads or looking for parking.

Great day, comfortable journey, staff were great. Nico the driver especially was amazing with his kindness. Enough time was given to explore. Only the meeting point was a bit confusing if the link provided did not work.

It's just a bus transfer in an uncomfortable bus. There is a booklet given to you, the maps in it are really bad and no help at all. There is presentation on the TV screen in front of the bus, extremely poor sound quality so nothing can be heard. The least that should be done is give a good map with streets marked and the places to visit marked. At both the places we could not find a touist oiffice where we could get a map ( not the operator's fault , but general apathy of the local tourist offices)
