4.9(267 reviews)From $42 per person

If you’re considering a stand-up paddleboarding adventure in the Algarve, you’ve probably come across this highly-rated tour that promises an up-close encounter with the famous Benagil Caves and the coastline’s stunning scenery. While we haven’t tried it ourselves, the reviews and details paint a picture of an experience that’s both accessible for beginners and packed with memorable sights.

What we especially appreciate about this tour is how it combines natural beauty with expert guidance, making it suitable even for first-timers. The small group size means you’re likely to get personalized attention, and the included photos help you relive the experience long after.

That said, it’s worth considering that the activity requires a basic swimming ability and a willingness to spend time on water—so if you’re nervous about being in the sea or have mobility concerns, it’s good to plan ahead.

We loved our paddleboarding experience with Fabio! Very informative about the area and a fun and engaging guide! We highly recommend this company for a more personal experience, as the group sizes are smaller than some others.

Setting the Scene: Why Choose This Tour?

The Algarve coast is famous for its dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches, and of course, the stunning Benagil Cave. This particular tour offers a way to see these natural wonders from a fresh perspective—standing on a paddleboard, floating along the calm, clear waters. It’s a chance to get close to the caves, soak in the scenery, and even learn a little about the geology of the area from your guide.

What makes this tour stand out is its ease of access. You don’t need to be an experienced paddler or an athlete to join. The instructions are clear, and your guide acts as both instructor and photographer, helping everyone stay safe while capturing those special moments.

The Experience: What’s Included and How It Works

The tour lasts approximately 1.5 hours, which is a good length for a relaxed yet fulfilling outing. You meet at Benagil Beach, where a friendly guide from Blue Xperiences welcomes you and gives a safety briefing. From there, you’ll head out with a small group—no crowded boats or large groups here—just a handful of fellow explorers and a knowledgeable instructor.

Brilliant morning thanks. The guides were lovely and really informative. Instructions and equipment all great too.
Rob
Really good tour on SUPs, stunning scenery and an excellent tour. Difficult for beginners but really well looked after. Thank you.

This was hands down one of the most amazing experiences of our trip. Paddleboarding was incredible — so much more personal and immersive than kayaking. From the moment we arrived, everything felt smooth, safe, and thoughtfully curated. Our guides were outstanding — experienced, attentive, and genuinely passionate about what they do. With nearly a 2:1 guide-to-guest ratio (we were four, and there were almost two guides just for us), the experience felt incredibly safe and supportive throughout. They constantly checked in with us, asking where we wanted to go, what we were curious to explore, and tailored the entire session to suit our preferences. The pacing was perfect, the vibes were re…

The activity begins with a short lesson on paddleboarding, great for first-timers or those who may need a quick refresher. Once on the water, you paddle out toward the famous Benagil Cave, getting a closer look than you’d get from land or boat tours. Your guide points out interesting features, fossils, and shares stories about the caves’ formation with humor and insight.

Visiting the Benagil Cave & Hidden Corners

The Benagil Cave is undoubtedly the star of the show, and from the water, it’s even more impressive. The way the sunlight filters through the opening, illuminating the interior, is breathtaking. Your guide often takes time to stop for photos inside or outside of the cave, capturing memories of your visit.

Beyond the main cave, you’ll explore secret corners and smaller grottoes, encounters that many reviews highlight as the true value of this experience. Since the tour allows close-up views on the paddleboard, you might notice details missed by larger boats, like fossils or unique rock formations.

One reviewer noted that “SUP was the way to go—I saw many details you couldn’t see by boat and could cool off with a dip in the sea between caves.”

Anthony
Ana was an excellent and friendly guide. We had a great time paddling the many caves along the beautiful coast!
Noelle
We had such a wonderful time with Anna! SUP was the way to go – we saw many details you couldn’t necessarily see by boat as well could take a dip in the sea to cool off between caves. Don’t be nervous – if you have to kneel the entire time vs stand up, you’ll still have a great time!
Hayley
We had a great time! Our guides were wonderful and told some interesting stories in the caves with humor. They also made great photographers 🙂

What Travelers Love & What Could Be Better

Algarve: Benagil Caves Stand-Up Paddle Board Tour - What Travelers Love & What Could Be Better

The overwhelmingly positive reviews reflect a tour that’s well-organized, scenic, and fun. Many mention the guides’ ability to make everyone feel safe and included, even those new to paddleboarding.

As one reviewer put it, “Bruno was a great guide who made this a very memorable experience.” The photos taken during the tour are often described as “marvelous,” giving travelers cherished keepsakes.

However, a few reviews hint at the importance of punctuality—since the safety briefing starts before the scheduled time, arriving late can disrupt the experience. Also, the activity isn’t suited for those with back problems, claustrophobia, heart issues, or anyone who can’t swim.

Who Should Consider This Tour?

If you love outdoor adventures, gentle water activities, or want a different perspective on the Algarve’s coast, this tour is a fantastic choice. It suits those who enjoy scenic beauty, are comfortable in the water, and appreciate small group experiences.

Gauri
Bruno and Ana were amazing! Great tour guides that led us to some amazing spots more than just the Benagil caves and had some awesome facts and stories! Definitely a must do in Algarve!
Gledson
We had a terrible experience with the lack of patience of Bruno but Miguel took over and saved the day. Miguel, you are the man. Give that man a raise. Awesome experience. Really recommend it.
Lindsay
I highly recommend going to Benagil at sunrise and using this company! We were a small group, and we got to be in the cave alone before anyone else arrived (throughout most of the day it’s quite crowded!) Bruno and Miguel were very helpful and skilled guides. We felt very safe doing something that was challenging, and also, they have a great location! Other companies are further away from the beach and you have to drag boards/kayaks up and down a big hill.

Families with older children or teenagers who can swim and are comfortable on water might also enjoy it, but it’s best to check individual comfort levels.
