If you’re planning a trip to Granada and craving a taste of the mountains and charming villages beyond the city’s famous sights, this Alpujarras Small Group Tour could be just what you’re looking for. It promises a chance to wander through picturesque, whitewashed towns, with a guide handling the winding roads into the Sierra Nevada.
It’s a popular choice — about 40 days in advance on average — which suggests it hits the right notes for many travelers.
What we really appreciate about this tour is its blend of stunning scenery and local insights. The small-group format (max 20 travelers) means you get a more personalized experience, with plenty of room for questions and relaxed exploration. Plus, it’s a great way to see a different side of Andalusia, away from the crowds and city hustle.
Amazing trip – I would definitely recommend. Scenery was fantastic. Our guide and driver Gonzalo looked after us very well.
Gonzalo was our guide and driver, he went out of his way to make sure we experienced the best of the region. We stopped in to see a friend of his who lives in a 400 year old house and learned what it was like for him to be in his late 70's, a retired intellectual who is spending his retirement in a village of 30 people. The entire area we visited was gorgeous, interesting and very rewarding to see. I would recommend this tour and if you have Gonzolo as your guide your time spend here will be truly amazing.
Our guide was extremely kind and professional and went out of his way to make sure we all had a great day, including our 7 year old. The day itself was fantastic. It was lovely to get out of Granada and see the Sierra Nevada and villages of the Alpujarra, which are really wonderful. This tour was excellent value for money and highly recommended.
One thing to keep in mind is that the tour is about 7 hours long, so it’s a full day out. While the price of around $115 per person is reasonable considering the transport and guide service, it doesn’t include lunch, so plan accordingly. Overall, it’s suited for travelers who love scenic drives, charming villages, and having an expert guide to enrich the experience.
Families with older children should find it engaging, but it’s less suited for very young kids due to the walking involved and mountain terrain.

Carlos was a lovely guide that accommodated me very well because I was the only person on tour that spoke English to translate separately just for me. It was also a very wet day but it made the mountains look mystical like something out of a movie. Carlos was very informative of the local areas and how they came to be and focused on the architecture of the houses in the small towns focusing on ancient traditions. Overall it is very worthwhile to check out.
It was amazing, I really liked the experience. Gonzalo, our guide, was very kind and friendly. I highly recommend it, the place is out of this world, just beautiful!
By far the best day and tour of our 1.5 weeks in Spain!!! Carlos was so fantastic- we visited several absolutely beautiful villages in the highest mountains, he took us through little quaint neighborhoods we never would have found on our own, made several special stops on the road for beautiful vistas, canyons and bridges, and gave us 1.5 hours of free time to eat and shop. Carlos made the trip! He is so knowledgeable, fun, personable and funny. The absolute highlight of our trip to Spain!!!
Las Alpujarras and Its Villages
The main highlight is visiting the emblematic villages of the region, including Lanjarón, Pampaneira, Bubión, and Capileira. These towns feature whitewashed buildings, narrow streets, and panoramic vistas, great for wandering and photography.
Travelers love the labyrinth of streets, which reveal layers of local history and architecture. One guest noted, “Carlos led us on a walk through Capileira which will be one of my best memories of our visit to Spain.
The history, architecture, and views are extraordinary.” The villages are small but packed with charm, with some reviews mentioning that the guide often leaves extra time for exploring at each stop.
Authentic Village Experience
The tour isn’t just about ticking off sights; it’s about soaking in the atmosphere. Past guests have enjoyed walking through picturesque streets, discovering local crafts, and simply taking in the breathtaking vistas. You might find that some villages are more remote and less touristy, which adds to their authenticity.
We had such a wonderful time traveling to and learning about the villages that make up the Alpujarras. Manuel, our driver and guide was courteous and knowledgeable! He was a great driver (very safe)! It was more of a personalized tour because it was just my friend and I which was so lovely!!! Great, relaxing experience with wonderful views!
A great way to see a beautiful area outside of Granada. Bring layers, the villages can chilly and windy.
My sister and I decided to do something different for our last day in Granada. We are so glad we signed up for this tour of Las Alpujarras! We were fortunate to have our tour guide, Gonzalo, all to ourselves! Gonzalo showed us incredible spots with stunning views, stopping at beautiful mountain villages, and sharing with us details on the history and culture of the region. He also gave us a great recommendation for a most delicious and bountiful lunch at a very friendly, family-run restaurant. He also introduced us to a pair of lovely ladies who are keeping alive the art of weaving using traditional looms. The scarves we purchased will forever remind us of the incredible time we spent with G…
Personalized Exploration
Thanks to the small group size, many travelers like Sofia, who shared a glowing review, appreciated the more intimate experience. “It was more of a personalized tour because it was just my friend and I — that made it so lovely!” This small-group dynamic allows guides like Gonzalo or Manuel to tailor the experience slightly, answer questions, and give detailed insights.
No Lunch Included
While the tour doesn’t include a meal, guide recommendations for local restaurants or cafes come in handy. Many reviews mention that having a guide who can suggest good spots enhances the experience. Be sure to bring water and wear comfortable shoes and clothes, as some walking and uneven terrain are involved.

Many reviews mention the stunning views and the peaceful atmosphere of the villages, describing the day as both relaxing and visually stunning.
This was a wonderful trip – helped by the fact that we were the only two travellers. Gonzalo was so knowledgeable about the area and we visited sites that we would never have found by ourselves. He gave us time to explore the villages and recommended a super restaurant for lunch. Overall a great day!
Best experience and well worth the price! We would have never been able to experience the Alpujarros like we did without going on this excursion . Our guide Gonzalo was the absolute best! He translated to English and truly gave us the best experience.
Excellent guide and service. Felt we saw and heard every piece of the alpujarras. Would not hesitate to take this day trip.
However, a few reviews mention the cost, stating that at about $115, it’s a fair value considering the included transportation and guide. But some also note that lunch isn’t provided, so plan accordingly for mealtime.

This was an amazing tour full of unexpected and interesting sites. Our guide, Gonzalo was wonderful, a mine of information on the history and environment, and drove carefully on the winding mountain roads. Our visit to the village of Capileira was as highlight, followed by a delicious lunch at a recommended tavern. I highly recommend this tour as a way to learn more about southern Spain.
We had the most wonderful guide who went out of his way to make the day magical. So glad we were able to do this trip and see a different side of life in Alpujarras.
My favorite experience in Spain. The pace, the people on the trip (from different regions of Spain), and our guide Gonzalo made this perfect. Highly recommend!
Timing-wise, arriving on time at the meeting point ensures you won’t miss out on the start. Since lunch isn’t included, you might want to bring snacks or plan a meal in one of the villages if time permits.
