If you’re considering a trip to France’s Alsace region, a wine-focused tour might just be the highlight of your visit. While there are many ways to explore, this small-group guided tour from Basel offers a relaxed, personalized experience that balances beautiful scenery, charming villages, and excellent wine tastings.

What caught our eye about this tour are two standout features: the chance to visit family-owned wineries that are often off the beaten path, and the personalized attention from a guide. These elements promise a more authentic and engaging experience compared to larger, more commercial tours.

Wonderful tour with our guide Colin! We visited three outstanding wineries (Emile Breyer, Hegel, and Bott Geyl) and Colin provided an excellent overview of the history of the wine industry and the area in Alsace. A perfect day all around!

We just finished up our tour of Alsatian wineries with Colin and what a fantastic day we had! Colin picked us up at our hotel and along the way gave us stories and history and local wine knowledge before stopping at our first winery. Ultimately, we visited three wineries, two medieval towns, and a nice little Alsatian restaurant for lunch. The wines were all wonderful, and the company as well. Highly recommend!
Hildy D
Colin was a delightful driver and wine tour guide. The wineries we visited were excellent and we ended up buying quite a bit of wine to drink on the cruise!

Of course, there’s one thing to consider: the price point of $336.24 per person is quite fair for an all-day, intimate experience, but it’s not the cheapest option out there. Still, if you value quality, expert guidance, and a carefully curated itinerary, this tour could be worth every cent.

This experience is best suited for travelers who love wine, enjoy exploring scenic villages, and prefer a more intimate, flexible tour tailored to their interests. Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or simply looking for a relaxed day in picturesque surroundings, this tour caters well to those seeking a blend of education, scenery, and good company.

This was one of the highlight tours. Our guide Mr. Colin Bell was a wine expert and so knowledgeable for all aspects of the vine and grape agriculture and wine production. His answers to our questions were thoughtfully provide with further explanation as needed. He interaction and knowledge of the wine tasting locations and personnel made for another level of tour information. We would rate this tour as 5 out of 5 for technical content, and knowledge of the region and ability to share this knowledge. The car was very clean and the Mr. Bell was able to provide commentary as he was driving to and from the villages and wineries. This is a tour that my wife and I would definitely recommend…

Great day out and thoroughly recommended. We were taken to places that we would never have thought of visiting. Tastings at the three vineyards were superb. Colin’s knowledge of his subject is vast and fascinating.

Stop 1: Eguisheim

Your first stop is the tiny, charming village of Eguisheim. As one of the region’s most beautiful villages, it’s often featured in travel guides for its cobbled streets and medieval architecture. Here, you’ll have the chance to explore at your own pace, perhaps wandering its quaint lanes or sitting at a cozy café.

The highlight at Eguisheim will be the visit to a family-owned winery, where you can see the vineyards up close and learn how the wines are made from grapes harvested right on-site.

The opportunity to stand among the vines of a Grand Cru vineyard and enjoy a chilled glass of wine directly from the vineyard is a memorable experience, as noted by one reviewer: “Imagine standing amongst the vines… enjoying a chilled glass of wine made from that very vineyard.”

Stop 2: Riquewihr

Next, your journey takes you to Riquewihr, often called one of the most captivating villages in Alsace. Its medieval architecture, with timber-framed houses and ancient walls, makes it a picture-perfect setting. Walking through Riquewihr, you’ll feel transported back in time.

This was an amazing tour! My husband and I booked this full day tour for our honeymoon, and we had an amazing time. Colin was a superb tour guide, he taught us so much about wine and even tailored the tastings to what we liked. We went to several villages, four wineries, and even got to see a vineyard! My husband and I agreed this was the best tour we’ve been on!

I would give this tour 6 stars if I could! Colin picked us up at our hotel in Basel at 9am and we were off to Alsace. And it was just my wife and I. We tasted at four incredible wineries and had a delicious lunch at a little restaurant in Riquewihr where Colin had made a reservation. Colin was very knowledgeable of the history of Alsace and its wines. It was also fun to see how he was warmly greeted at each winery. He is obviously welcome at each and you will be also.

During your visit, you’ll tour three wineries nestled among coveted Grand Cru vineyards. These visits might involve tasting a variety of wines, from crisp whites to more complex reds, all crafted with passion by local families. As one reviewer mentioned, “We tasted at four incredible wineries and had a delicious lunch,” highlighting how the day is designed to be both indulgent and informative.
