If you’re thinking about seeing a different side of the Netherlands — away from the busy city streets of Amsterdam — this Windmill, Cheese, and Countryside E-Bike Tour offers a peaceful, authentic glimpse into traditional Dutch life. It’s a popular choice for travelers who want to combine gentle exercise, scenic views, and some tasty local treats in one well-rounded experience.
What I really like about this tour is how accessible it is — whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a beginner — thanks to the electric bikes. Plus, visiting picturesque villages and a windmill, then sampling cheese made on a real farm, makes it both fun and flavorful.
That said, it’s worth noting that e-bikes aren’t suitable for those under 160 cm (5 ft 2 in), and the tour can be canceled in severe weather, so it’s not quite a spontaneous trip if the weather looks bad.
We loved this experience- absolute 10/10. Don’t go past this if you go to Amsterdam. Scenic, informative and fun. Bikes were great and easy to ride. Cheese factory amazing and the places we visited all exceptional. Our guide David was absolutely amazing. A lovely guy and full of information and excellent knowledge.
Great vistas of the countryside and just the right amount of distance
This was an excellent activity! I’d consider it a “must see” for Amsterdam! Getting out of the city to see the country side was wonderful. It is mostly biking and following the guide (about 26 miles total biked) but it’s manageable on the e-bike. We stopped to see cows along the trail, at a little town square, a windmill and at the cheese farm. It was a good pace and tour length. The cheese farm was wonderful and delicious! You get lots of time to sample and shop if you’d like. Our guide was very friendly and courteous. The last hour straight was biking back to the city. The rest had breaks with the stops every thirty minutes or so. This was a moderate activity and not really a lei…
This tour is great for those who enjoy a relaxed pace, love charming scenery, and want an easy way to see the countryside without renting a car or going on a more strenuous hike. It’s also suitable for travelers who appreciate local craftsmanship — especially cheese — and are curious about how these iconic Dutch products are made.
If you’re after a low-key, rewarding outdoor activity that takes you just outside Amsterdam, this could be just right.

Starting Point and How You Get There
The tour begins at Piet Heinkade 25 in Amsterdam, a central spot easy to reach and a common departure point for many city-based activities. From there, you’ll take a short ferry ride across the IJ river, leaving behind the city’s buzz for the calm of Waterland. The ferry ride itself, with views of landmarks like the A’DAM Tower and Eye Film Museum, adds a scenic touch to the beginning of your journey.
What an awesome day! we were so lucky with the weather. It was great to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city to see the countryside. Highly recommend this tour!!
The tour was great, the bikes were in good condition and easy to use. The tour guide was great for giving information and answering any questions. The stop at the dairy farm was a highlight, we had a tour and everything was well timed. Unfortunately I wasted money on buying cheese after being told it was okay to bring back to the UK but then finding out that the rules had recently changed.
Well planned trip that allowed one to understand the farms Town Centers adjoining the City of Amerstand
The Itinerary Breakdown
The day unfolds with a guided or self-guided route that takes you through a series of stops designed to showcase the best of the Dutch countryside. You’ll start with a brief visit to the D’Admiraal Windmill, which is a quintessential Dutch sight. The mill is not just a pretty picture; it’s a working windmill that offers insight into traditional milling methods.
Reviews mention that the windmill visit is well worth the 10-minute stop, giving you a snapshot of historical Dutch engineering.
Next, the scenic village of Broek in Waterland welcomes you with its perfectly preserved houses and peaceful canals. One reviewer describes this as “a place where time seems to have completely stopped,” which makes it ideal for photos and soaking in the local vibe. Expect about 15 minutes to wander or listen to your guide’s commentary if you choose the guided option.
The tour then moves to Monnickendam, a charming fishing village with a historical harbor. It’s a quick stop, around 10 minutes, but enough to admire the waterfront and imagine what life in this seaside town might have been like centuries ago. Travelers often mention how these stops feel like stepping back in time.
This was the best guided tour that we took during our entire trip. We booked a 930am trip on Aug 19th. Our guide was very informative and overall excellent. The bikes are definitely a game changer. We would recommend booking this tour to anyone who wishes to get out of Amsterdam and see the countryside.
Christian guided our group. He was very informative and kind, always making sure the group was together, as well as answering our questions. We were offered ponchos and helmets by the guides to take along since it was a rainy day. The e-bikes were good quality with adjustable height for the sit. The Willig cheese farm was a joy as we could go see "the girls" lounging in the barn and choosing when to go get milked. If you are considering this tour, bring a clip-on phone holder to attach to your bike.
Great ride across country side! Tour guide mauricio was very helpful throughout
From there, the route takes you to Katwoude, the heart of cheese-making country. Here, you’ll visit a traditional cheese farm, where you can witness cheese being made from scratch and sample a variety of flavors.
Several reviews highlight how much fun and delicious this part is — “the cheese was amazing,” and “staff couldn’t have been friendlier.” The 30-minute cheese farm visit is a real highlight, especially for foodies.
The final stops include Zunderdorp and a small fishing village — each offering picturesque scenes and a relaxing atmosphere. The total route covers a good mix of land, water, and quaint neighborhoods, all connected by smooth bike paths. Many reviews emphasize how enjoyable the ride is, with the e-bikes making it accessible regardless of your cycling experience.

We enjoyed our bike tour with Massimo and our cheese tasting. Definitely recommend having some previous bike riding ability but the e-bikes make the trek not too strenuous. Massimo helped our group maintain a good pace but we didn’t feel rushed – highly recommend!
This was a perfect way to see so much of Amsterdam all in one tour. Countryside, old windmill, small villages, farms, canals, animals, locals and more. Be prepared to ride a lot but I loved that too! I do wish I could have pet a cow like in the pictures but that’s ok. Our guide was friendly and the perfect amount of history without being too long. I would highly recommend this tour!
Excellent day. Great bikes. Easy to ride. Great to get out into the countryside. Beautiful scenery. Excellent stops and information. Beautiful cows and dairy farm with cheese factory.
