Ancient Perge, Aspendos Amphitheater and City of Side Tour

Explore three of Turkey's most impressive ancient sites in one day—Perge, Aspendos, and Side—with expert guides, hotel pickup, and lunch included for just $42. Perfect for history lovers.

5.0(644 reviews)From $42.33 per person

We’ve reviewed hundreds of tours across the Mediterranean, and this full-day excursion from Antalya genuinely delivers on what it promises. What really impresses us is how efficiently the itinerary manages to pack four major archaeological sites into a single day without feeling rushed, and how consistently travelers praise the depth of knowledge their guides bring to each location. The fact that you’re getting hotel pickup, lunch, and access to some of Turkey’s most well-preserved Roman sites for under $45 per person represents exceptional value in today’s tour market.

That said, there’s one realistic consideration: this tour tries to cover a lot of ground in 10 hours. While most travelers find the pacing manageable, a few visitors have noted they wished for more independent exploration time at certain sites, particularly at Perge and Aspendos. This tour works best for travelers who want a rundown of the region’s highlights and don’t mind a moderate amount of time in the van between stops.

This experience suits history enthusiasts, anyone curious about Roman and ancient Greek civilization, and travelers who want to maximize their time while staying comfortable. It’s also ideal for families with older children and for anyone who appreciates having an expert guide bring these ancient stones to life with detailed historical context.

The tour guide was fantastic. The history of these places is amazing… the Hittites, Greek Gods & Goddesses, the Roman Empire, Alexander the Great…. you're in places where the things you learn in history become more than just stories from a book.
Arush K
The places you get to see are really cool, I wish I had more time in Side to be honest. The guide was very knowledgeable and we had a great time

Great day trip to Perge, Aspendos and Side all in one trip. The tour guide Aught was brilliant and very informative on all aspects of the tour itinerary. Top job done 👍

What Makes This Tour Special

Ancient Perge, Aspendos Amphitheater and City of Side Tour - What Makes This Tour Special

The Ancient Perge, Aspendos, and Side tour stands out in Antalya’s crowded tour market for several reasons that go beyond the typical sightseeing checklist. At its core, this tour connects you with three genuinely significant archaeological sites that most casual travelers never actually visit. You’re not just seeing famous landmarks—you’re exploring substantial ruins where you can walk freely among structures that have survived thousands of years.

The small-group format (capped at 15 people) changes the entire experience. Larger tours can feel like herding cattle from one photo spot to the next, but this size allows your guide to actually engage with questions and adjust the pace based on group interests. Several reviewers specifically mentioned appreciating the smaller group dynamic, with one traveler noting, “I liked that the group size was not too big.”

What consistently emerges from the reviews is the caliber of the guides. This isn’t a generic tour where you get whoever’s available that day. Travelers repeatedly mention guides by name—Ibrahim, Ozzy, Recep, Oğuzhan, and Ms. Gamze—and describe them with genuine enthusiasm. One guest wrote, “Ibrahim Was so knowledgeable about so many things…his historical knowledge was phenomenal. We were glued to our seats.” Another noted that their guide “brought the city of Perge to life with the information he shared.” This consistency suggests Tourmania has invested in their guide training and retention.

Breaking Down the Itinerary: What You’ll Actually See

You can also read our reviews of more city tours in Antalya

Stop 1: Perge Ancient City (Approximately 1 Hour)

Perge sits about 17 kilometers from Antalya, in the Aksu district, and represents one of the most significant Roman cities in Anatolia. What makes this stop particularly compelling is that Perge isn’t mobbed with travelers. Unlike some famous archaeological sites, you’ll find relatively few crowds here, which means you can actually explore freely without feeling like you’re part of a massive tour herd.

The city itself reveals a sophisticated Roman urban plan built on two perpendicular main streets running east-west and north-south. What you’ll see includes a theater with a capacity of 15,000 people that remains remarkably well-preserved, and one of Turkey’s best-preserved stadiums. The sculptural work unearthed here was so significant that it now fills an entire gallery in the Antalya Museum dedicated specifically to Perge’s artistic output.

One traveler captured what many feel about this site: “I almost think this city/ruins are more interesting than Pompeii. There was almost no one there besides us, and nothing is roped off so you have the freedom to get up close and explore which is really cool.” The lack of restrictive barriers means you can actually touch the stones, climb the theater steps, and experience these ruins in a way that feels authentic rather than museum-like. Your guide will help contextualize what you’re seeing—the architectural innovations, the daily life that unfolded here, the historical periods that shaped the city from Hittite times through the Roman era.

Our guide, Ozzy, was knowledgeable and friendly. He gave ample time at each stop to explore on our own. Perge and Aspendos were fascinating, the waterfall not so much. But we live in Oregon where the waterfalls are plentiful. It was a very hot day and the van was sweltering. Better air conditioning would have helped tremendously!

Arrangements with the tour company were good & we were picked up as arranged. The visits to the sights were amazing although it was difficult to understand the guide at times. The waterfall visit was very rushed and it was very busy there. The included lunch was very good. It was good to have time in Side although we would have liked a bit more! The amphitheater at Aspendos and the Apollo ruins were breathtaking. We were unlucky to have a very long drive back to Kaleici due to a crash, it was very hot in the minibus although the a/c was fully on. We were tired and hot but we wouldn’t have missed seeing the sights!
Rod P
This was a full day of seeing various historical sites near Antalya. Each one was pretty spectacular. I liked that the group size was not too big. We also had independent explore time at each stop, which I loved.

Stop 2: Aspendos Amphitheater (Approximately 2 Hours)

If Perge is impressive, Aspendos is breathtaking. The amphitheater here ranks among the most perfectly preserved Roman theaters anywhere in the world. You'll drive roughly an hour from Perge to reach it, which gives you time to process what you've seen and prepare for what's coming.

When you arrive at Aspendos, the theater immediately strikes you. It's massive—genuinely monumental—yet the preservation is so complete that you can almost imagine audiences gathering here two thousand years ago. Unlike many ancient theaters that have been partially reconstructed or heavily damaged, Aspendos looks almost intact. You'll have the opportunity to climb all the way to the upper seating areas, which many travelers specifically mentioned as a highlight. From those upper rows, you get a perspective on the engineering that built this structure and a view of the theater's full scale that ground-level photos simply can't convey.

Your guide will explain the architectural innovations that made this theater possible—the vaulted corridors, the acoustic design, the engineering solutions that allowed the Romans to build such substantial structures without modern machinery. One guest described it simply: "The amphitheater at Aspendos...was breathtaking." Another said, "The Aspendos theatre is as good as whole...the view of the theater was breathtaking from there."

Stop 3: The Zultanite Factory and Shopping (Approximately 1 Hour)

Between Aspendos and Side, you'll stop at a local shop featuring Zultanite, a gemstone found in this region. This isn't a hard-sell souvenir trap—it's presented as an opportunity to browse and pick up authentic local crafts if you're interested. One traveler noted, "I thought the price, the make and finishing here were better than the other places that we had previously visited." You're under no obligation to buy anything, and the stop gives you a chance to stretch your legs and use facilities.

Stop 4: Side and the Temple of Apollo (Approximately 2 Hours)

Side sits on a scenic peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean, and it's the most tourist-oriented stop on the itinerary. The city itself is a working archaeological site where modern life coexists with ancient ruins. You'll find restaurants, shops, and a lively atmosphere that contrasts with the quieter, more contemplative mood at Perge and Aspendos.

The Temple of Apollo is the headline attraction here—a series of iconic columns standing right on the waterfront with the sea as a backdrop. It's genuinely photogenic and historically significant, as your guide will explain. However, Side is also a complete ancient city with other ruins scattered throughout, including remnants of what was once a substantial Roman settlement. Some travelers wished they'd had more time here, while others found it felt too touristy compared to the other sites.

One realistic note: several reviewers mentioned that Side felt like "a massive tourist trap" with "tons of overpriced shops selling junk." This is a fair assessment. If you're hoping for an unspoiled archaeological experience, Side is less pristine than Perge. However, if you enjoy wandering through seaside towns with both history and modern amenities, you'll find plenty to explore. The waterfront location is genuinely lovely, and the Temple of Apollo is worth seeing in person.

Here's some more things to do in Antalya

Lunch (Included in Tour Price)

Your lunch is served at a village restaurant overlooking the river, served buffet-style. Multiple travelers specifically praised this meal. One guest wrote, "Lunch was a buffet at a very sweet village overlooking the river. The drinking yogurt here was homemade and delicious." Another simply noted, "The included lunch was very good." This isn't fancy restaurant dining—it's authentic local food at a peaceful location, which is exactly what you want in the middle of a full day of sightseeing.

It's worth noting that drinks during lunch aren't included, so budget a few dollars for water, tea, or wine if you want them. The buffet approach means you can eat at your own pace and choose foods that appeal to you.

Optional: Manavgat Waterfall

The itinerary sometimes includes a stop at Manavgat Waterfall, though this appears to be variable. Reviews of this stop are decidedly mixed. Some travelers found it peaceful and a pleasant way to end the day, while others felt it was unnecessary and took time away from the archaeological sites. One guest described it as "serene and peaceful. The perfect place to end our wonderful day," while another said, "The Manavgat waterfall...was disappointing" and "feels like an unnecessary stop and takes time away from the more impressive parts of the tour." If waterfalls aren't your priority and you'd prefer more time at the ancient sites, this is worth clarifying when you book.

Practical Details That Matter

Ancient Perge, Aspendos Amphitheater and City of Side Tour - Practical Details That Matter

Transportation and Timing

You'll be picked up from your hotel in Antalya (including neighborhoods like Lara, Kundu, Kaleiçi, and Konyaaltı) at 8:00 AM. The tour runs approximately 10 hours total, which means you're back at your hotel around 6:00 PM. This is a full day, but not an exhausting one—you're not hiking long distances or dealing with intense physical exertion.

The van itself is air-conditioned, though a couple of travelers mentioned the air conditioning could be more effective on very hot days. One guest noted, "The van was sweltering" and "The 'air conditioned van' was not well air conditioned." This is worth considering if you're visiting during peak summer months. Bringing a light scarf or sweater is practical, and staying hydrated is essential.

Your driver is a professional who takes safety seriously. One traveler specifically mentioned appreciating the driver's responsible approach: "We've taken a few Yellow Taxis around Turkey, and every time has been borderline terrifying. The driver on this tour felt very professional and drove responsibly which we appreciated."

What's Included and What Costs Extra

For $42.33 per person, you get:
- Hotel pickup and drop-off
- Professional guide
- Lunch
- Entrance to the Temple of Apollo (one of the sites)

What's not included:
- Entrance fees to Perge and Aspendos (approximately €30 total, or roughly $33 USD)
- Drinks during lunch
- Any shopping or souvenirs

The entrance fees aren't hidden costs—they're clearly stated upfront. When you add them in, your total cost per person comes to around $75, which still represents good value for a full day with a guide, transportation, and lunch included.

Group Size and Atmosphere

With a maximum of 15 people, you get a genuine small-group experience. This size allows your guide to notice if someone's struggling, answer questions, and adjust the pace based on group interests. Several travelers specifically mentioned appreciating this aspect. One guest wrote, "Our guide...gave ample time at each stop to explore on our own," while another noted, "He provided the right amount of information, made sure all guests were attended to, and led us from one place to another (4 sites in total) so efficiently."

The Guides: The Real Heart of This Tour

Ancient Perge, Aspendos Amphitheater and City of Side Tour - The Guides: The Real Heart of This Tour

What genuinely sets this tour apart is the consistency and quality of the guides. This isn't a tour where you're hoping for a good guide—the reviews suggest that most guides have genuine expertise and passion for their work.

Several guides appear regularly in the reviews: Ibrahim, Ozzy, Oğuzhan, Ms. Gamze, and Recep. Travelers describe them with genuine affection and respect. Ibrahim, in particular, gets mentioned multiple times with descriptions like "knowledgeable and passionate," "brought the city of Perge to life," and "phenomenal" historical knowledge.

Ms. Gamze receives particularly enthusiastic praise: "With a background in history and archaeology, her knowledge was both deep and comprehensive...Her expertise and enthusiasm made the tour both informative and enjoyable, ensuring that we left with a greater appreciation for the rich heritage of Perge, Aspendos, and Side."

This consistency suggests that Tourmania has invested in hiring guides with actual educational backgrounds (several are noted as having history or archaeology training) rather than just tour operators who've memorized scripts. The difference is noticeable when you're standing in front of 2,000-year-old ruins and your guide can explain not just what something is, but why it matters historically and how people actually lived.

Value Assessment: Is It Worth the Money?

Ancient Perge, Aspendos Amphitheater and City of Side Tour - Value Assessment: Is It Worth the Money?

At $42 per person (before entrance fees), this tour costs less than many single-attraction tours in other parts of Europe. You're getting four substantial archaeological sites, transportation, a guide, lunch, and nearly 10 hours of your day. The inclusion of lunch alone saves you $15-20 per person if you were eating on your own.

The real value isn't in the price—it's in having an expert guide contextualize what you're seeing. Standing at Perge without understanding its history, you'd see ruins. With a guide, you understand the city's strategic importance, its artistic achievements, and how daily life unfolded within these walls. That transformation from "looking at old rocks" to "understanding a lost civilization" is what makes this tour worthwhile.

One traveler captured this perfectly: "You're in places where the things you learn in history become more than just stories from a book." Another noted the tour gave them "a greater appreciation of turkey."

What Travelers Consistently Loved

Ancient Perge, Aspendos Amphitheater and City of Side Tour - What Travelers Consistently Loved

Looking across 644 reviews, several themes emerge consistently:

Expert guides appear in nearly every positive review. Travelers appreciate guides who are knowledgeable, passionate, and able to make history feel alive and relevant.

The sites themselves inspire genuine awe. Even travelers who had critiques about pacing or other stops consistently praised Perge and Aspendos as worth seeing.

The value regularly gets mentioned. Travelers often comment that they got far more than they expected for the price.

Included lunch and logistics matter. Having your hotel pickup handled and lunch included removes friction from the day, letting you focus on the experience rather than logistics.

Honest Considerations

Ancient Perge, Aspendos Amphitheater and City of Side Tour - Honest Considerations

This tour isn't perfect, and the reviews include some valuable critiques worth considering.

Pacing concerns: Some travelers felt the tour tried to pack too much into one day. One guest noted, "Not even remotely enough time to explore any of the sites. Perge was huge and we saw probably 1/2 of it at best." If you're someone who prefers deep exploration of one or two sites rather than a survey of multiple locations, this tour might frustrate you.

Side's tourist atmosphere: Multiple reviewers mentioned that Side felt overly touristy and commercialized compared to Perge and Aspendos. If you're seeking authentic, unspoiled archaeology, the Side portion might disappoint.

The waterfall stop: Several travelers questioned whether Manavgat Waterfall added value to the itinerary. If waterfalls aren't your priority, you might prefer that time allocated to the ancient sites instead.

Heat and comfort: A few travelers mentioned the van's air conditioning wasn't quite sufficient on very hot days. This is worth considering if you're visiting in peak summer.

One significant service issue: One reviewer reported a missed pickup and poor customer service response. This appears to be an outlier based on the overall review volume, but it's worth noting that service can occasionally fall short. The company's response disputed the details, but the incident suggests checking your confirmation details and having backup contact information.

Who This Tour Is Perfect For

This experience works beautifully for several types of travelers:

History enthusiasts will find genuine value in the expert guides and significant sites. If you love understanding how ancient civilizations organized themselves and developed sophisticated architecture, this tour delivers.

Travelers with limited time can see multiple important sites in one day rather than trying to organize individual visits. You get efficiency without sacrificing quality.

People who appreciate having expert context rather than self-guided exploration. The guides transform what you see from interesting ruins into a coherent narrative about how people lived and built in the ancient world.

Families with older children (probably ages 10 and up) who can engage with historical information and handle a full day of moderate activity.

Anyone seeking good value. Compared to other Mediterranean tours, this delivers substantial content at a reasonable price point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are entrance fees really not included, and how much will they cost?
A: Entrance fees to Perge and Aspendos aren't included in the base price, totaling approximately €30 (around $33 USD). The Temple of Apollo entrance in Side is included. Check current pricing closer to your travel date, as fees can change.

Q: What's the physical fitness level required?
A: The tour requires moderate fitness. You'll be walking on uneven ground at archaeological sites and climbing steps at the theater in Aspendos, but there's no hiking or strenuous activity. If you have mobility concerns, discuss them when booking.

Q: How much independent time do you get at each site?
A: Based on reviews, guides typically give you time to explore on your own after providing historical context. One traveler noted their guide "gave ample time at each stop to explore on our own." The amount varies by guide, but it's not a rushed experience.

Q: Is lunch adequate, and are there dietary restrictions accommodated?
A: Lunch is served buffet-style at a village restaurant and multiple travelers praised the quality and local authenticity. If you have dietary restrictions, contact the tour operator in advance at [email protected] or +905416061276 to discuss options.

Q: What if the weather is bad?
A: If the tour is canceled due to poor weather, you'll be offered either a different date or a full refund. This is stated in the cancellation policy.

Q: Can you arrange hotel pickup from hotels not listed?
A: The tour typically picks up from Antalya, Lara, Kundu, Kaleiçi, and Konyaaltı. If your hotel isn't listed, you're instructed to contact the tour operator to arrange pickup.

Q: How many people typically go on this tour?
A: The maximum is 15 people, and it's capped at that size to maintain a small-group experience. The actual group size varies, but you won't be in a massive tour group.

Q: Is the Manavgat Waterfall stop worth it?
A: This varies significantly by personal preference. Some travelers found it a peaceful way to end the day, while others felt it was unnecessary and preferred more time at the ancient sites. If waterfalls aren't a priority for you, this is worth clarifying or potentially skipping.

Q: How much time do you actually spend in the van?
A: With four stops spread across the region, you'll spend roughly 3-4 hours total in the van over the 10-hour tour. The longest single drive is about an hour between Perge and Aspendos. If you're uncomfortable with extended van time, this might not be your ideal tour.

Q: What if you want to see Side's theater or other ruins beyond the Temple of Apollo?
A: Side has additional ruins throughout the city, and you're free to explore them on your own time. However, one guide reportedly discouraged visitors from seeing Side's theater because Aspendos is more impressive. You can absolutely explore Side more thoroughly if you have interest—the time allocation depends on your guide and group pace.

Q: Is this tour suitable for families with young children?
A: The 10-hour duration and moderate walking might be challenging for very young children (under 8), but families with older children typically do well. The sites are genuinely interesting, and there's variety in the day to keep people engaged.
