One of the things we really like about this tour is its easy access—just about an hour from Reykjavík and right next to Route 1, making it a convenient spot for a half-day trip. Plus, the chance to visit four caves in one go means you’re not just getting a quick peek but a decent overview of this historic site.

Fascinating, informative, beautiful, and enjoyable! Where warm, comfy clothes. You start inside their building, where they sell warm drinks, some snacks, and memorabilia. There are restrooms. Then you walk the property to experience 4 caves. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable & entertaining. The walking part is short, but be prepared to stand for a bit while inside the caves.

Loved this tour! Stefan was an awesome guide who shared great stories about the history of the caves. Would highly recommend this tour!
Michelle B
Guide very knowledgeable and Caves were very interesting. So glad we didn’t miss seeing this experience.
Natalie C
It was okay. We were a bit underwhelmed. We got to visit 3 caves and that’s it. If I would have known that it was just going into 3 caves without much to it, I wouldn’t have booked this tour.

Many reviews mention the local guides’ knowledge and friendliness. One comment notes, “Hanna did a great job of touring us around the caves. Great to learn about history.” This personal touch makes the experience more engaging, especially if you enjoy stories and historical context.

The caves themselves are described as man-made, and some even functioned as a Christian church, making them quite unique. Visitors can see the construction techniques and imagine the lives of those who used these caves centuries ago.

The Cave Experience

While some visitors find the caves fascinating and a true “step into history,” others mention that the caves are not very elaborate or large. One review notes they visited only three caves and felt it was “just going into 3 caves without much to it,” which could leave those expecting a more extensive adventure somewhat disappointed.

The group size is limited to 30 people, which generally creates a more relaxed atmosphere and allows for better interaction with the guide. The duration is about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, making it a manageable chunk of time for most travelers.

The Caves of Hella was a remarkable experience! It was such a cool opportunity to learn more about Iceland and literally step into a part of history. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable and the tour size was intimate and personable. I could not recommend this more for any fan of history or archeology.

Well worth the drive out from Rekyavik. Even better if you're driving the golden circle and book this just before you head out to the first stop. Bundle up because it's super chilly out at this site.

Came across this tour by accident and after speaking to the staff decided to book it for a few days time. Was not disappointed the guide was great made everything realistic and had good historical knowledge. He also was very funny.

Accessibility & Location

The tour’s location is conveniently close to Reykjavík, about an hour’s drive, and sits right beside Route 1. This makes it an easy addition to a day trip, especially if you’re planning to explore the south coast or the Golden Circle.

Most travelers find the drive worth it, especially if you’re interested in uncovering Icelandic history beyond the usual sights. One reviewer said, “Well worth the drive out from Reykjavík,” and even better if you’re already planning to be in the area.

Cost & Value

At just over $43 per person, the tour offers a reasonable price for a quick cultural and historical experience. Considering that admission to the caves is included, this fee seems fair, especially if you enjoy learning from an engaging guide.

Some reviews express that the experience is “interesting but a little too expensive,” which might depend on your expectations. If you’re eager to see more elaborate caves or have a more adventurous experience, you might not find this tour completely satisfying. But if your goal is to learn about local history and see man-made caves, it’s a decent deal.

The tour guide was fun! Unfortunately in my opinion, they were making something out of nothing. Interesting but a bit of a let down. Many others really enjoyed it so you will need to decide for yourself.

Absolutely amazing experience! To be able to visit and witness history pre-viking Era is incredible. Our tour guide, Stefan, was extremely knowledgeable and threw in humor and story telling throughout the tour. I hope more of the history, and other caves, are eventually explored. But for now, I appreciate that this family has done such an excellent job at keeping the history alive and preserved.
