When you’re looking to see a slice of Portugal beyond Porto, a day trip to Aveiro and Coimbra is a fantastic choice. While we haven’t personally taken this exact tour, the reviews and details paint a pretty clear picture of what to expect — and honestly, it sounds pretty appealing.
For those who love a mix of scenic waterways, historic universities, and charming old towns, this tour offers a well-rounded taste of Portugal’s heart.
One thing we really appreciate about this experience is how it balances guided sightseeing with free time—giving you the chance to explore at your own pace. The small group size (up to 8 people) also promises a more personalized vibe, which many travelers find makes all the difference.
Although this was a group tour, we were the only ones. Our guide Chris was absolutely fabulous! 9 hours and it was the most relaxing tour and day yet. My greatest regret was that I forgot to take cash for a tip. Wonderful to see Aveiro and Coimbra plus the boat tour. The library was incredible but you have to download as no pictures allowed.
What a day!! Jaoa Jesus was an excellent guide. He adjusted to different needs of group members throughout the day with regards to limited mobility. We were still able to do everything on the planned tour and he spent time with us especially in Coimbra showing us some hidden jewels in this city. If you go purchase the tickets to the palace, library and chapel- they are all must sees. Costa Nova and Aveiro with boat ride were fun as well. Jaoa made the travel time fun and interesting with facts about the destination and interesting information. Highly recommended!!
Our guide Chris was great. He was professional, friendly and very knowledgeable about this area of Portugal. Highly recommended
The boat cruise in Aveiro seems to be a highlight, offering a relaxing way to see the city’s canals — which some reviewers compare to Venice, minus the crowds.
On the flip side, a possible consideration is the length of time spent in Coimbra, which some found a bit long, especially at the university. But if you’re into history and culture, that might not be a downside at all.
This tour is best suited for travelers who want to experience more than just Porto, especially those interested in cultural sights, picturesque waterways, and historic architecture. And if you’re comfortable with a full day on the move — around 9 hours — it can be a very worthwhile outing.
Just keep in mind, it’s not a tour specifically tailored for families with young children, but older kids with curiosity and patience will likely enjoy it.

The Itinerary Breakdown
This tour kicks off bright and early at 9:00 am from Porto, with a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle picking you up at the meeting point. The first stop is at Ria de Aveiro, where you’ll hop on a Moliceiro boat for about an hour. This boat cruise is often highlighted as a major highlight. Travelers love the relaxing scenery and how it offers a unique perspective of Aveiro’s waterways.
One reviewer, Deirdre, mentioned how the ride was “cool,” and others appreciated the enchanting views that felt like a quieter, more authentic Venice.
We’ve been on 4 tours since arriving in Porto and this is the only one that picked us up and left us at our place. Outstanding. He had to do the tour in English and Portuguese and handled it beautifully. He answered all questions. Picked us up places instead of having us walk to accommodate people who couldn’t walk far. He was wonderful and made the tour so enjoyable. Thanks.
A wonderful day trip with lots of history and scenic views. The drives Chris & Joel were amazing and flexible who accommodated the open parts of the day to our needs. Exceptional lunch.
We had a wonderful day. Our guide was very informative and attentive. We arrived to all our destinations without any delays inspite of the rain. His generosity was much appreciated as he gifted our group a dessert commons to Aveiro, Ovos moles de Aveiro. He also, made my wife’s day by granting her one last stop to see the Costa Nova area. We would recommend this tour to anyone.
Next, you’ll visit the Aveiro Railway Station, known for its colorful tiles and Art Nouveau style. It’s a quick stop, about 30 minutes, but gives a nice photo opportunity and a taste of local architecture.
Afterwards, there’s a generous 1 hour 30 minutes of free time for lunch and exploring. The flexibility here is appreciated, as you can find a local café or grab a quick bite, making it feel less rushed.
From there, the tour visits Costa Nova, famous for its striped houses and seaside charm, for about 30 minutes. It’s great for taking photos and soaking in the views of the Atlantic coast. You might enjoy a walk along the beach or a quick browse through local shops.
The second major city, Coimbra, is next. There, you’ll spend roughly an hour visiting Portugal’s oldest university and its stunning library, the Biblioteca Joanina, which is often lauded for its beauty. One traveler noted that the university’s impressive architecture made a lasting impact. The guided visit includes some free time to soak in the atmosphere and explore.
Finally, the tour concludes with a visit to the "Manga Garden" or cloister, and a stop at a church, rounding out the cultural insights. The entire journey wraps up back at the meeting point, usually by around 6:00 pm, after a full day of sightseeing.
