If you’re planning a trip to Switzerland and considering a day trip to Bern, you’re in for a treat — or at least, a solid experience. This small-group tour offers a well-rounded glimpse into Swiss culture, history, and scenery, all packed into about ten and a half hours.

We’ve looked into the details, the reviews, and what this kind of experience really offers, so you can decide if it fits your travel style.

What makes this tour stand out? First, you’ll love the stunning alpine views during the scenic drive through the Entlebuch Valley. Second, the visit to the Kambly biscuit experience is a sweet highlight, especially if you enjoy local treats. However, a potential downside is that the tour isn’t a full day entirely spent in Bern — which could be a bummer if you want endless hours exploring the city.

The guide was great. The cookie company and cheese company products were not what anyone should eat. On the list of killer, habit forming things that should not be eaten. Full of sugar, carbohydrates, highly processed grain, saturated fat and cholesterol. The views from the bus were great. Bern was great except for the bear habitat. Would have been nice if there was time for lunch in Bern. Great photo opportunities in Bern.

Honestly, I was a little disappointed in this trip. I think it was not suited to my interests. If you are extremely interested in Switzerland history & facts, prefer cars over trains, or have mobility issues I would recommend it. However, my sister and I are very active and did not like how much time we spent in the car. We would’ve preferred taking public transport and walking more at each of the stops. Additionally, our guide was a BIG talker. Which can be great if you are super interested in all things Switzerland. However, when he rambled for the entire trip it was hard to retain anything. I feel like he was filibustering on the topic of Switzerland. I prefer tour guides that tell you…

Bear pits – big Healthy bears. Great driver and tour guide. Small Group tour is a plus. Kambly stop was fun and sampling of treats generous. Tasty.

This trip suits travelers who want a taste of Switzerland’s charm with some guided insights and aren’t expecting to spend an entire day wandering Bern on their own.

Best of Switzerland Tours is very well organized. I wish we had seen the cheese making happening instead of a cute animated experience. We went in the PM, maybe be at the farm/factory in the AM? Bern was a beautiful city to visit and the cookie factory was fun!

Going to the Kambly cookie factory and cookie shop…a “do-it-yourself” try before you buy…was a lot of fun. The only problem was having the willpower to resist sampling more than a few cookies! 🍪 The cheese tasting at Emmentaler Farm, not so much fun. As a former teacher of young children, I can tell you that the program was geared for an 8 year old and was less than entertaining to me, my husband, and the couple with us. Emmentaler needs to revamp their program and consider who their target audience is. Perhaps if the cheese was being made early in the day, Taste of Switzerland could change the order of the contents of the trip by visiting the farm early and watching the process o…

Very much enjoyed the day trip to Bern. We enjoyed the views of the countryside, & the farmhouse visit Gallvus was an excellent tour guide. Bern is a must visit place.

The route takes you through the Entlebuch Valley, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. We loved the way your guide will share interesting tidbits about the area’s flora and fauna, making the scenery educational as well as beautiful. The drive itself is a highlight, giving you plenty of opportunities to snap photos or just enjoy the landscape.

Kambly Biscuit Experience

Your first stop is at the Kambly Experience — Switzerland’s premier biscuit factory. Here, you’ll watch a master confectioner at work, see how the famous biscuits are made, and sample a variety of treats.

The tasting session is ample, with some reviews describing the treats as generous, and you get a drink included too. It’s a fun, lighthearted start to the day, especially for those who love sweet snacks.

One thing to keep in mind: the visit lasts about 45 minutes, and some reviews note it’s a bit short — only about 10 minutes of actual video or demonstration with some animated storytelling. Still, the samples are plentiful enough to satisfy most visitors.

We enjoyed the cookie factory and cheese factory. The countryside was lovely and tour guide was very knowledgeable.

The tour guide Gallus was a very Knowledgeable person, so he made whole trip more interesting, and of course Bern is such beautiful old city .

It was a great day! Brigitte is a very nice guide and she did her best to help us with whatever questions we had, she offered us a lot of useful information and she has a very professional style! I would definitely recommend her to anyone taking this trip and not only!

Exploring Bern’s Old Town

After the biscuit factory, it’s time for the main event — Bern itself. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy a guided walk through the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town, which many call one of the most attractive Swiss cities. Expect to see iconic sights like the Bern Münster with its towering 100-meter spire, the historic parliament building, and the charming cobbled streets.

The guide will share insights about Bern’s architecture and history, giving context to the picturesque facades and landmarks. As one reviewer pointed out, Bern is both quaint and modernized, with some modern touches like trams running through old streets, which might not be everyone’s aesthetic preference but is part of the city’s charm.

You’ll have around 2 hours and 15 minutes here — enough time for a quick lunch (not included), some shopping, or just wandering on your own. Some reviews mention that more time in Bern would be nice, but considering the day’s schedule, this is a reasonable amount of time.

Cheese Tasting at the Emmental Dairy

Post-Bern, the tour takes you into the Emmental region, famous for its cheese. Your visit to the show dairy involves walking through the production area, learning about how Emmental AOP cheese gets made, and tasting the nutty cheese that Swiss folks adore.

A small group but organize tour..our guide Thomas set the rules clearly and our group respected the rules..no shoving or being on top of one another unlike our jungfraujoch tour..

Peter was our driver and guide on this private day tour. It was a great day filled with history and a guided walking tour in Town before having free time on our own. Would highly recommend this tour!
Ravi N
Was good and informative. Tour guide took us around and showed us the highlights of the location. Was very pleasant and hospitable.

The “King’s Way” audio-visual tour provides a nice overview, though a few reviews express disappointment that the cheese-making demonstration isn’t live or more extensive. Still, the cheese tasting is generous, and the scenic stop at a nearby dairy farm offers a great photo opportunity with views of rolling hills.

The final stop is at a dairy farm with spectacular views over the countryside, great for snapping pictures. The tour ends back in Zurich, with plenty of time to reflect on a day filled with Swiss culture, scenic beauty, and tasty samples.

What’s Included and What’s Not

You get transportation, a professional guide, visits to Kambly, Bern’s Old Town, the cheese dairy, and a goodie bag of regional products valued at CHF 30. Food and drinks in Bern are on your own, so you can explore local eateries or grab something on the go.

The tour is certified as carbon-balanced by myclimate, which is a nice bonus for eco-conscious travelers. It’s also worth noting that the group is pretty small, which many reviewers appreciated for the relaxed atmosphere.

I enjoyed the trip. We spent a couple hours in Bern, which included about a half hour walking tour. If you want to spend more time a Bern it would be better to take the train there. However, the benefit of this day trip is the scenery and stops along the way there and back. On the way there they take the scenic route, so you see some very nice views. On the way there we stopped at a cookie store, where we walked around on own sampling all the cookies on the shelves. You can eat as much and as many as you want. There was at least 20 different types of cookies. After this we went to Bern. On the way back from Bern we stopped at a small cheese making place, where we watched how the make cheese …

Thomas was a good guide and was able to guide us well during this tour. We stopped at the biscuit factory and a dairy farm on the way, as well as the old city of Bern. I personally would have liked to spend more time in Bern, considering it was the title of the trip. The biscuit factory stop was good for sampling the biscuits and purchases. The dairy farm stop was a bit confusing and all over the place, since we were trying to look at the old way of making cheese but there was already a demo in progress in the local language and it didn't look like it was about to stop anytime soon, so we just were roaming around randomly, as opposed to having details on what was happening. There was also su…

On time departure, clean, spacious mini bus, tour guide professional and polite. But felt the time we stopped at the Kambry shop and cheese factory is too long, would been great to have spent an extra hour exploring the old part of city of Bern.

Is This Tour Worth the Price?

Bern Small-Group Day Trip from Zurich Including Cheese Tasting - Is This Tour Worth the Price?

At $293.77 per person, it’s on the pricier side, but considering Swiss standards, the included tastings, guide, and transport make it a fair value. The small group enhances the experience, making it less like a coach tour and more like a behind-the-scenes glimpse into Swiss life.

Reviewers agree that the guide's knowledge and friendliness add a lot to the experience, turning what could be a rushed day into an engaging journey.

The Drawbacks

Some visitors feel that certain stops, like the biscuit factory and cheese farm, are too short or not as authentic as they’d hoped. Others mention the long drives and wish there was more time to explore Bern independently.

If you're a history buff or a foodie eager for in-depth experiences, this might feel somewhat limited. Also, the tour’s timing means a quick visit rather than an immersive day in Bern.

Who Should Consider This Tour?

This trip is ideal for travelers who want a scenic getaway with guided highlights without spending too much time planning or wandering aimlessly. If you enjoy food tastings, picturesque drives, and learning basic facts about Swiss culture, you’ll find plenty to enjoy. It's also suitable for those who appreciate small groups and a more relaxed pace.
