If you’re dreaming of seeing Hawaii’s Big Island beyond the usual ground-level perspective, a helicopter tour like this one might be just what you need. From the reviews and tour details, it’s clear this experience offers some of the most breathtaking views of volcanoes, waterfalls, and coastlines, all in a single ride.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just want an unforgettable adventure, this flight promises a unique way to connect with Hawaii’s stunning landscapes.

What really caught our attention are the amazing scenery you get from flying high—lava bubbling from active volcanoes, lush rainforests, and dramatic waterfalls—plus the guided narration that helps you understand what you’re seeing. On the flip side, it’s not a cheap experience, and the weather can sometimes be a factor.

Great staff, James was an amazing pilot. He was very friendly, informative and interactive. However the actual experience, for the price, was slightly underwhelming. I would recommend this if you are trying to see the island and NOT driving to any destinations. We had driven a majority of the island and the sights, so when we did this it was kind of a repeat. You do get great views from above but you do not stop anywhere scenic like some of the other tours advertise. Also it is important to note that the video and photos do cost extra, something we found unfortunate for the price of admission. Overall, good experience, great staff but the experience itself a little underwhelming.

We appreciated all the safety protocols Blue Hawaiian had in place. The flight was under two hours and seating was comfy. The best view was had by the couple who sat next to our pilot. There are four seats behind those three seats so the copter holds seven including the pilot. I got a big kick out of the musical soundtrack. Magic Carpet Ride played as we took off, Jimmy Buffett's Volcano was on as we circled Kilauea and the theme Music for Jurassic Park played as we flew through a dense jungle gorge. These people have a great sense of humor. It was fantastic seeing parts of the island that one cannot get to any other way. All good things must come to an end and we weren't ready to land but w…

Still, if you’re looking to make the most of your time on the island and love views from above, this tour could be a fantastic choice.

This experience is especially suited for those who want a rundown of the Big Island in a short time, and for travelers who appreciate the thrill of seeing volcanoes and waterfalls from the sky.

Keep in mind, it’s designed for most people, but if you’re carrying extra weight (over 240 lbs), there are some extra steps to consider. This tour combines adventure, education, and stunning visuals—perfect for anyone who wants the true “wow” factor.

This was one of the BEST experiences ever! The tour was incredible- our pilot, Shane, was knowledgeable, fun and completely experienced, so we felt safe the entire time. The flight plan he chose with the sights and beauty of the island were so stunning it brought tears to my wife. One thing we didn’t anticipate was how wonderful the rest of the staff was. We had made an error that was entirely our fault and the staff was so gracious towards us, going above and beyond to help us fix our mistake. Tiffany is absolutely the BEST offering us customer service that was beyond excellent. Jordan too was so helpful and kind. We cannot say enough good things about this company and the service they of…

Meeting Point and Check-in

Your adventure begins at the Blue Hawaiian Helicopters base in Waikoloa. Check-in is about an hour before your scheduled flight, which ensures you have time for a safety briefing, guest weight check, and to get strapped into your seat. The check-in process might seem a bit structured, but it’s all about safety and making sure each flight departs on time. Arriving early is recommended—traffic can sometimes be unpredictable.

The Flight Itself

Once aboard, you’ll don Bose aviation-grade noise-canceling headsets, which block out the helicopter noise and let you listen to your pilot’s commentary and music. The flight time is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, with the total experience lasting around two hours, including check-in and debrief.

The Highlights Along the Route

The itinerary includes several key stops—or rather, scenic views—each offering something distinct:

  • Kohala Coast: Known for its ranches and valleys, you’ll see expansive green pastures and rugged terrain. Reviewers mention this area’s breathtaking valleys and natural beauty.
  • King Kamehameha’s Final Years: Flying over the west coast town where the legendary king spent his last days, this spot combines history with scenic views.
  • Volcanoes: The biggest highlight—viewing one of the five volcanoes that formed the island. Recent eruptions, like the December 2022 flows, are visible from the air, giving you a real-time glimpse of Hawaii’s volcanic activity.
  • Kilauea Volcano & Park: You’ll see the continuously erupting Kilauea, which has been active since 1983 and attracts millions of visitors annually. This active volcano offers some of the most dramatic and powerful sights.
  • Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park: Encompassing over 335,000 acres, this park climbs from sea level to 13,000 feet and features six climate zones. It’s the ideal place to appreciate the vast diversity of the island’s landscape.
  • Wailuku River & Akaka Falls: Flying over lush rainforests, you’ll spot Akaka Falls, which drops 442 feet into the valley—arguably Hawaii’s most famous waterfall. Reviewers love this part, describing the view as “breathtaking” and “simply stunning.”
  • Ranching Country & Coastal Cliffs: The tour also passes over historical ranching areas and dramatic coastlines with waterfalls cascading into the ocean.

One reviewer described it as “an emotional experience,” feeling the power and majesty of Hawaii’s volcanoes from close range. The waterfalls, especially Akaka, are equally impressive, with the lush greenery providing a perfect backdrop.

The Value of the Experience

Big Island Spectacular Helicopter Tour - The Value of the Experience

At nearly $800 per person, this isn’t a cheap outing. But when you consider the scope of what you’re seeing—multiple volcanoes, waterfalls, rainforests, and coastlines—from a single, compact aerial tour, it’s easier to see the value. As one reviewer noted, “seeing so much from the air is much better than driving,” especially given Hawaii’s expansive and often difficult terrain.

The included features—like the noise-canceling headsets and microphone communication—really enhance the experience, allowing you to fully understand what you’re looking at. Plus, flying with a small group of just six people creates a more personal, less hurried atmosphere, which many travelers appreciated.

While optional photo and video packages are available for purchase, many reviewers mention that the experience itself is worth the price. They speak of "spectacular views," “amazing landscapes,” and "once-in-a-lifetime moments," making it clear this tour leaves a lasting impression.
