Discovering the Basque Coast: Bilbao’s Gaztelugatxe, Bermeo, Mundaka, and Gernika Tour Review
If you’re looking for a way to see some of the most iconic sights along Spain’s Basque coast without spending days on the road, this full-day tour from Bilbao might be just what you need. It’s designed for travelers who want a balanced mix of nature, history, and local flavor—perfect if you’re short on time but eager to experience the region’s highlights.
What we really like about this tour is how it combines stunning coastal scenery with cultural insights, all wrapped up in a manageable 11-hour package. Plus, the inclusion of a txakoli tasting at a local winery adds a special, authentic touch. On the flip side, it’s worth noting that the tour involves a fair amount of walking and physical activity, which might be tiring for some.
The tour is really worth it, if you have only a few days in Bilbao. Aitor was a very knowledgeable guide. Highly recommended.
This was a very good, well planned trip that was pleasant from beginning to end. Danny was bright, entertaining and knowledgeable. We'd highly recommend this day trip.
Though there was a bit of confusion at the beginning as to which group ours was, thankfully everything worked out fine. Our guide, Stephan, provided key information on the places to visit, the order of visits, and so forth. Our first stop was Gaztelugatxe, or as HBO fans will recall “Dragonstone”. Stephan rightly informed us the hike would be strenuous and everyone accepting the hiking “challenge” needed to keep time in mind as the hike out could take 25+ minutes and would be tiresome due to the downward incline and number of steps up to the top while the return trip could easily take 40+ minutes repeating the numerous steps down along with a hike “back up” on a steep incline….
This experience seems best suited for curious travelers who enjoy a mix of outdoor adventures and cultural exploration—especially those who appreciate guided insights and regional flavors.

Introduction to the Tour
This tour offers a thoughtfully curated way to explore the Basque coast’s most photogenic spots and its cultural backbone. Starting early from Bilbao, you’ll hop into an air-conditioned vehicle with a guide who will accompany you through each stop, sharing stories and context that you might not get exploring on your own.
Priced at just under $57 per person, it strikes a good balance between affordability and value, especially considering the admission tickets included for key sites and the txakoli tasting at the end. The tour is operated by Buendía and typically booked about 20 days in advance, which is a handy tip if you’re planning ahead.
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe: A Coastal Gem
The highlight for many is the walk to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a rugged island with a tiny hermitage perched atop. The walk involves climbing 241 steps, and as many reviews point out, it’s a steep and sometimes tiring trek. One reviewer mentioned, “The walk was excellent but not easy,” but also emphasized how “the views are worth the trip.”
A good series of stops around Biscay. I will warn the initial hike is a bit tougher than it looks and you should go prepared for it as a short hike and not as a walk. The stops in the towns are relatively short so if you want to see something there that's not on the iterinary you will need to depart from the iterinary somewhat but these are mostly small places definitely worth seeing. Recommended.
This tour was the highlight of my trip to Bilbao. It was well organized and the agenda was perfect . Out tour guide Aman and driver Verónica we’re the best !!!! Aman explanation were excelente . He’s knowlegenle and very profesional … Verónica is most ajillo drivet i’ve ever seme ….my respecto to them !
This was an excellent trip. We visited various sites around the Basque country with significant historical and religious significance. I got to eat lots of tasty pintxos too. Stephen (our guide) was also very upbeat and shared with us a lot about Basque history. Kudos to Veronica (our driver) who drove us safely through the winding mountain roads too.
During the walk, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the coastline, with plenty of opportunities for photos. The top, with its hermitage dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, offers a sense of achievement after conquering the ascent.
Some visitors note that during the months of January and February, access to the hermitage itself is closed, but viewpoints remain open—something to keep in mind depending on the time of year.
Bermeo: A Charming Fishing Village
Next, you’ll visit Bermeo, a place full of authentic Basque character. The guided tour includes a stroll through the old town and a visit to the fishing port, giving you a taste of local maritime life. Travelers describe Bermeo as authentic and full of charm, a perfect spot to soak in local culture without the tourist crowds.
Mundaka: A Surf and Food Haven
Mundaka is famous for its famous harbor and reputation as a surfing hotspot. But beyond that, it’s also a haven for lovers of Basque cuisine. You’ll have about four hours here—enough time to wander, enjoy some pintxos, and try regional dishes like marmitako (a tuna stew). The scenery is stunning, with a picturesque harbor set against rolling hills.
Pedro the tour guy showed knowledge. He was able to narrated and explain everything. On the other hand Veronica de driver was rude. Also there was no Air conditioning after the third stop. It was unbereable. Really hot.
A fantastic experience, seen beautiful parts of the coast and little towns, nice churches and everything, give this trip more than 100 points.
It was a great tour as a whole. The guide was very knowledgeable and he gave us detailed and interesting information. I would recommend doing the tour as the program specifies, starting with hike and the stairs while we are still fresh and ending with the winery as drinking wine is an activity more suited for the afternoon hours rather than the morning.
Reviewers highlight that Mundaka is beautiful, and many enjoy tasting local txakoli wines, which are crisp, slightly sparkling white wines great for pairing with seafood.
Gernika-Lumo: A Town with Deep Roots
Gernika is a must-visit for its historical significance, especially because of its role during the Spanish Civil War. The town is home to Picasso’s famous mural and the Tree of Gernika, symbolic of Basque identity. The guided walking tour here is about an hour and a half, taking you through air-raid shelters, the town’s memorial sites, and the mural.
Several reviews mention the emotional weight of Gernika, describing it as a place full of memory and resilience. The tour provides context to the bombing and its impact, making it more than just a sightseeing stop.
Tasting Txakoli at Berroja Auzoa
The final part of your day is a visit to Berroja Auzoa winery, where you’ll enjoy a txakoli tasting. This regional wine, known for its lightness and slight effervescence, is a perfect way to end the tour. Reviews praise the quality of the tasting and the opportunity to mingle with locals while sampling these signature wines.
Aitor was excellent guide for a highly informative tour. To learn and see live the history of Guernica, I highly recommend this tour.
Nice spots, clean bus, friendly tour guide. The bodega was disappointing: it was not possible to taste and compare different wines, we got just one glas. That was it.
Every bit of this tour was fantastic including our driver Alberto and especially our guide Aman. Enjoyed the views and lunch stop and winery.
Logistics and Practicalities
The tour kicks off at 8:30 am from Bilbao’s PuppyMazarredo Zumarkalea, 66. The group size maxes out at 55 travelers, which keeps things manageable but still lively. The air-conditioned vehicle ensures comfort during the roughly 11-hour outing, and all guided tours and tickets are included—except for lunch, which allows you to explore local eateries on your own.
The tour ends back at the starting point in the early afternoon, giving you some flexibility afterward if you want to continue exploring Bilbao or relax.
Real Travelers’ Feedback
The reviews paint a pretty balanced picture. Many praise the guides and the beautiful scenery, with some noting the well-planned itinerary and the value for money. One review mentions that the walk to Gaztelugatxe is steep and tiring, so good footwear and a bit of stamina are advised.
Some reviewers did find the audio commentary lacking, especially in larger groups, which made it harder to catch the guide’s explanations at certain stops. Others mentioned that free time at some stops was a bit long, but overall, the consensus is that the experience is worthwhile.
Great mix of experiences from Gernika to the coastal towns to the hike to the island church! The hike is a challenge but well worth it. Aman was a terrific guide, providing good background on the various sites we saw, especially in Gernika, including an explanation of what we were looking at. He was also very accurate in his cautions on the hike to the church (looooong name). He was also always helpful with questions. The driver (Sergio) was also terrific, taking that big bus down roads I’d have found challenging in a car. I do regret that I wasn’t able to tip them, and if there is a way to do that, please contact me.
It was a grat place yo see a bit challenging but woth the effort. We has a great gide very knowledgeable.
It’s a trek but it’s worthwhile. The views from SJG are insane and the other places are beautiful too. The experience is amazing and our guide was really good and funny and knowledgeable.
