If you’re a certified diver looking to add a touch of magic to your underwater adventures, the 2-Tank Night Dive with Dive Oahu Inc could be just what you need. While I haven’t personally done this tour, the glowing reviews and detailed info paint a pretty appealing picture for anyone who loves exploring the ocean after sunset.

What particularly draws us in is how this experience promises a completely different view of familiar sites—a chance to see nocturnal sea life come alive under the cover of darkness. Plus, the inclusion of top-tier gear and snacks makes it feel like a well-rounded, thoughtful outing.

This was my first time diving in Hawaii and also my first night dive. Capt. Adam aboard the Stress Relief along with Jeff, Heather and Chris were our dive guides and did a fantastic job keeping us safe, helping where needed underwater and pointing out interesting marine life. Our first dive was at the Sea Tiger wreck before sunset. We saw eels, urchin and tons of fish. The second dive was after sunset at Kewalo Pipe and we saw a unicorn fish and a slipper lobster. Great experience all around. Great people. Great ScubaPro gear. Highly recommended.

One thing to keep in mind is the cost, which is around $106.63 per person. While this isn’t cheap, many feel the quality of guides and the uniqueness of the experience justify the expense—especially if you’re a seasoned diver craving something out of the ordinary.

This tour is best suited for PADI-certified divers over 15 who are comfortable in the water and want to experience what the ocean looks like when most of us are asleep. It’s not ideal for beginners or non-swimmers, but if that’s you, there are lots of other options in Oahu.

A Closer Look at the Night Dive Experience

Certified Diver: 2-Tank Night Dive - A Closer Look at the Night Dive Experience

The tour kicks off around 5:30 pm at Dive Oahu’s meeting point at Kewalo Basin Harbor in Honolulu. The timing is perfect—you get to enjoy a stunning sunset before the surface interval. Watching the sky change colors while waiting to submerge is a peaceful way to start the evening.

After the sunset, you’ll head out on a boat to one of Honolulu’s favorite local dive spots. Here, you’ll enjoy a twilight surface interval, giving you a chance to prepare for the night ahead. Once submerged, you’ll see the ocean in an entirely different light—literally. Many reviewers have noted how the marine activity changes once the sun dips below the horizon.

The guides will assist you with your equipment, which is top-notch, because quality gear makes all the difference in night conditions. You’ll don your gear, equipped with lights, and head down to see what’s hidden in the darkness. The real magic happens when creatures like octopuses, sharks, eels, and glowing cuttlefish make their appearance, often under the glow of your flashlight.

Reviewers love their encounters—notably seeing a large eel hunting, a glowing cuttlefish, and bioluminescent creatures like nudibranchs and live conchs. One diver happily recounted seeing a monk seal swimming nearby during an evening dive. The presence of animals such as turtles and even sharks adds to the thrill, making each dive feel like an adventure.

Why Guides Make a Difference

Certified Diver: 2-Tank Night Dive - Why Guides Make a Difference

The reviews repeatedly mention the knowledgeable and friendly guides. For example, one diver shared how Megan was “amazing and very knowledgeable,” which helped make their first night diving experience absolutely perfect. The guides’ ability to manage safety while maximizing fun and discovery is a big reason why so many guests feel comfortable and excited throughout.

Guides also handle all the logistics, fitting you with gear and making sure you’re prepared for the environment. If you’re rusty or nervous, this kind of professional oversight really helps, as highlighted by a diver who had not been diving in over a year but felt completely at ease.

The Gear and Comfort

All equipment is included, and it’s described as “premier gear,” which means you won’t have to worry about uncomfortable or outdated gear. The quality gear, combined with the small groups, means less fumbling and more focus on enjoying the spectacular underwater sights.

Snacks and refreshments are also provided, giving you the chance to refuel and chat about the incredible sights you’ve just seen.

Price and Value

At just over $100 per person, this tour appears to be good value for a well-organized, guided experience in one of the most beautiful locations in the US. When you consider the inclusion of gear, snacks, professional guides, and the small group size, it’s clear that you're paying for quality and safety, not just the dive itself.

Many reviews echo this sentiment, with guests expressing they’d happily do it again and recommending it as a highlight of their trip.
