It was informative and enjoyable. The crew was great. Craig did a great job narrating the trolly portion of the trip.
Craig was so knowledgeable. We appreciate the history he provided from cradle to grave. Definitely will recommend. We also appreciated the complimentary water.
Our trolley guide/driver was awesome! Very informative and knowledgeable. Would love to take one of his other tours.

Setting the Scene: Starting Point and Duration
Your journey begins in front of the Chattanooga Choo Choo at 1400 Market Street. The tour is usually available in the morning and lasts around 4 hours, making it a manageable morning or early afternoon activity. The group size seems to be comfortably manageable, allowing guides to keep the narration lively and personalized.
The Trolley Ride: City Sights and Stories
The main stretch of the trolley is a highlight. With panoramic windows, you’ll get a wide view of Chattanooga’s streets and neighborhoods. The guides, praised for their vast knowledge and engaging storytelling, make the ride more than just a scenic drive. Expect to learn about everything from the early days of horse-drawn streetcars to the rise of electric vehicles and modern automobiles.
Many travelers, like Emily and Sherry, mention how informative and enjoyable the trolley segment is, especially thanks to guides like Craig, who is consistently described as knowledgeable and animated. The comments reflect that the narration is both educational and lively, making the history come alive.
Vintage Artifacts and Unique Vehicles
One of the standout features is the opportunity to see a 1948 mountain incline railway vehicle. For history buffs or those with a fondness for vintage transportation, this is a real treat. The inclusion of this artifact helps visitors visualize how transportation technology has evolved over decades, adding a tangible element to the stories told.
Great tour. Great guide. Very knowledgeable in history, including politics, economics, culture, best places to visit or activities to do, recommendations for restaurants, and so much more.
Just the train and the expression on my grand kids faces when they saw everything
Was a great tour. Only problem we had was that we did the trolley tour the day before. Did not realize the tour & train were one and the same for trolley portion. Would have been nice if that was noted on the trolley tour that we could enjoy both together. We paid for both tours one on Saturday & other on Sunday.. Parking was also expensive for 2 days in a row.
The Train Ride: “Missionary Ridge Local”
Following the trolley experience, you’ll hop onto a train operated by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. The ride, which lasts for a portion of the tour, is described as a straightforward journey from the station to the rail yard and back—mainly a history lesson about railroad operations rather than a scenic adventure.
Reviewers like Jessica and Eric note that the train is clean, well-air-conditioned, and the guides are informative, albeit somewhat less interactive during this part.
For those expecting a scenic or leisurely train ride, it’s worth noting that the focus is more on the history of railroads than on spectacular views. Still, the rail yard itself offers insight into ongoing railroad work, which adds an authentic touch.
What Makes This Tour Special?
Beyond the transport artifacts, the tour provides a rundown of local history—from the earliest horse cars to modern innovations like electric vehicles. Valerie highlights how the guides are not only knowledgeable about transportation but also about politics, economics, culture, and local recommendations, adding extra layers to the experience.
Me and my husband love learning about history and this tour was perfect. The guide was very knowledgeable and made it interesting. Would definitely recommend
We had a blast during our trolly ride. it was great learning about the history of the Chattanooga Choochoo! definitely worth going again.
I really enjoyed learning the history of Chattanooga
Many reviews emphasize the value for money, with the $59 price point including both the trolley and train rides, as well as expert narration. This makes it an accessible way to fill a morning with meaningful learning.
Downsides and Considerations
While most reviews are glowing, some travelers express minor reservations. A few noted that the train ride was short and somewhat utilitarian, mainly focusing on railroad operations rather than scenic or leisurely aspects. Plus, parking fees are not included, so budget accordingly if arriving by car.
Another point to consider is that the train ride and trolley tour are part of the same experience, which might surprise visitors who booked separately, as Frank mentions. It’s a good idea to read the itinerary carefully to understand what’s included.

This tour works best for curious minds, families, or anyone with a soft spot for vintage vehicles and local stories. If you’re after a fun, relaxed way to learn about Chattanooga’s past without strenuous walking or complex logistics, this is worth considering.
Craig (our guide) was very knowledgeable about the history of Chattanooga. Started by boarding at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel and toured (in the motorized trolly) all around town. After about an hour drive around town, we headed to the Tennessee Railroad for a train ride and tour of the active work area. The cost of the train ride is included in the cost of this your. Highly recommend this tour as it provides insight into many historical sights and the facts about the various sights that are viewed along the way. A great value for the money and an easy tour for those who don’t want to do a lot of walking….
This was my fault. I didn't read the itinerary of the trip. I expected a scenic ride and tour. The tour was a great history story of the city of Chattanooga. The train ride was just a straight shot from the station to the rail yard with a history lesson then back to the station. This was still a great experience.
Craig was our driver for the trolley of the city tour. He was very knowledgeable of the cities history thru all time periods. His wife helped also. They're good people to be around and we'd recommend the tour. In their part, they took us out to the train ride plus, picked us up to deliver us back to our starting point.
