Looking for an adventure that combines hiking, wildlife, and some seriously beautiful beaches? This Coastal and Jungle Hiking Tour near Puerto Vallarta is the kind of experience that promises to take you off the beaten path — if you’re prepared for a good workout. It’s a full-day excursion that’s perfect for those who love nature, stunning scenery, and a bit of physical challenge.
Two things we really like about this tour are the expert guides who know the area inside-out and the diverse beaches you get to visit, many of which are only accessible on foot or by boat. The third highlight? The chance to enjoy local seafood at the end.
On the flip side, it’s definitely not for everyone. The hike is challenging, with steep, uneven, rocky trails through dense jungle, so if your fitness isn’t up to it, this might be a stretch. Plus, it’s best suited for travelers over 10 years old and under 70.
Diego was fabulous. Assisted with photos and hike. Fantastic lunch at final beach. Highly recommended. Bring proper footwear.
A great experience that oozed small town Mexico feel. You walk through small villages and get a glimpse into daily lives. Immersed with Mexican culture with ‘post card’ views all around. We visited private beaches that were secluded but safe. Ended with a fabulous lunch at Las Animas beach. Some parts of the hike at the beginning stage were tricky (steep steps mostly) but overall was a fairly leisurely hike. It’s around 5.5km with 3/4 stops along the way. I would 100% recommend this experience. Our guide Emilian was fantastic & he spoke through the history off the wildlife & villages
I have been to Puerto Vallarta many times and have always wanted to do this tour. I wish I would have done it sooner. You get to see a very different side of Jalisco area. The terrain was pretty strenuous but worth every step. Wear good shoes, wear a swimsuit and bring a towel. We swam in several beaches and ended with a fantastic meal in paradise at Las Anamas Beach. Our guide was Isai. We couldn't have asked for a better guide. He was knowledgeable, supportive, friendly and super fun! He really helped make the day unforgettable. My partner and I will definitely do this adventure again!
This tour works best for active travelers who want a genuine, immersive experience that combines hiking, wildlife spotting, and some delicious local food. If you’re into outdoor adventures and don’t mind a bit of a workout, this could be just your thing.

An In-Depth Look at the Itinerary

Starting Point and Meeting
The adventure kicks off early at C. Constitución 363 in the Zona Romántica. You’ll meet your guide here, so it’s best to be on time. The tour begins with a bus ride along the coastline to Boca de Tomatlán, a charming fishing village that sets the tone for the day. The pickup service is included, which is great — no need to worry about hailing a taxi or navigating public transit yourself.
The Coastal and Jungle Hike
From Boca de Tomatlán, the real fun begins. You’ll hike along rugged coastal trails and through dense jungle, heading toward Playa Colomitos, often referred to as the smallest beach in the bay. The hike is not casual — it’s described as challenging, with steep, rocky paths and narrow trails. Expect uneven surfaces and some demanding inclines, so comfortable, sturdy footwear is a must.
The first segment of the hike is reportedly more strenuous, especially on a hot day. As one review notes, “The first third of the hike is a bit strenuous especially on a hot sunny afternoon. Wear comfortable footwear.” That’s worth keeping in mind if you’re not used to physical activity or if you’re planning to do this in the middle of the day.
Diego was super nice, very informative and very accommodating for all of us. We weren’t experienced hikers but we were able to complete the entire hike. It ended at the beautiful beach. We highly recommend this excursion and if you get Diego as the tour guide, then you’re extra lucky
Lots of elevation gain, and a long day, but it was absolutely incredible. We went in December and it was very hot – be mindful of the heat. Our tour guide, Jerry, was very personable and easy to get along with. His English was flawless. We really enjoyed spending the day with him.
This tour was hands down our favorite day during our entire Puerto Vallarta vacation. Our group consisted of two adults and three adult children, and every single one of us had an incredible time. The guides were exceptional – professional, knowledgeable, and engaging throughout the entire experience. They provided fascinating information about the local plants, wildlife, and history of the area, which really enriched the journey. Their expertise made the tour both educational and entertaining. The hiking itself was beautiful, taking us along stunning coastal and jungle terrain. The lunch was delicious, and the boat ride was a perfect way to experience the area from a different perspective. …
Visiting Playa Colomitos
Once you arrive at Playa Colomitos, you'll be rewarded with crystal-clear waters and soft white sand. This tiny beach is a highlight — quiet, beautiful, and perfect for a quick swim or a relaxing break. You might also enjoy snorkeling here if conditions are right.
Guests often mention the exclusivity of this spot. It’s not crowded, which makes it all the more special. One guest said, “Beautiful, cristal clear water and white sand, where you can have a cerveza, snorkel, and relax by the beach.”
Continuing to Playa Las Animas
Next, you’ll hike further along the coast to Playa Las Animas, a larger beach with a lovely restaurant where you can enjoy fresh seafood and cold drinks. The hike here continues to be scenic, with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife like reptiles, birds, and native plants, thanks to your guide’s commentary.
The Beachside Meal and Relaxation
At Las Animas, many reviews mention the delicious seafood — a highlight for food lovers. The tour ends with a well-deserved meal at one of the best restaurants on the beach. The options include seafood favorites like fried snapper, and the reviews rave about the freshness and quality.
The Boat Ride Back
After lunch, you’ll hop on a boat from Las Animas back to Boca de Tomatlán. The boat ride offers fantastic views of the coast and jungle from a different perspective. Many users describe it as unforgettable, with stunning mountain and ocean views.
What to Expect During the Hike

Guides are praised for their knowledge and friendliness. They point out interesting flora, fauna, and local history along the way. With small groups (max 12), the experience feels intimate and personalized. The pace is steady — suitable for those who enjoy a good workout but may not be perfect if you’re very out of shape or have mobility issues.
The terrain is rocky, uneven, and sometimes narrow, so wear sturdy shoes. Parts of the trail are steep, but the scenery makes the effort worthwhile. Be prepared for hot weather — bringing a hat, sunblock, and plenty of water is advised.
Wildlife and Nature
Guests consistently mention wildlife sightings — reptiles, birds, and native plants are common sights. The guides do a great job explaining the environment, making the hike more engaging.
Accessibility and Restrictions
This tour isn’t suitable for children under 10 or for people with mobility or joint issues. It’s also not recommended for pregnant women or those with heart conditions. It requires good physical fitness and a willingness to navigate challenging terrain.
The Value and Overall Experience

When you consider the price of $45, this tour offers excellent value for money.
