Crete: Santorini Guided Day Trip by Boat – A Practical Look
Traveling between Crete and Santorini can be a logistical challenge, but this guided day trip by boat offers a well-organized way to tick this iconic island off your list. Whether you’re short on time or simply eager to see the highlights without the hassle of planning every detail, this tour is worth considering.
What we appreciate most about this adventure is its focus on delivering stunning views and insider-guided tours of Oia and Fira. Plus, the inclusion of ferry tickets and guided transportation means less stress for you.
The whole day was amazing! Every step ran smoothly and we enjoyed every moment with no worry or stress! Beautiful island. Thankyou so much. Would thoroughly recommend!!
The guide was good, relaxed pace and got to see enough of scenery. Recommend the caldera boat trip instead of another hour in Fira. Gives different perspective of the island and is also a bit of fun.
Great experience of visiting Santorini, everything made very easy
On the flip side, a potential downside is that it’s a long day, often starting quite early, and the boat rides can be choppy—something to keep in mind if seasickness or a packed schedule isn’t your vibe.
This tour seems best suited for travelers who want a comprehensive yet manageable glimpse of Santorini, especially if they’re based in Crete and want a hassle-free experience.

Discovering Santorini in a Day: What’s Involved

This tour is designed to streamline your visit, packing in the best of Santorini—its picture-perfect villages, breathtaking volcanic landscapes, and lively streets—without the need for separate planning. It starts early, with pickup options from Crete (Heraklion or Rethymno ports), and includes ferry rides that take around 2.5 hours each way.
The ferry experience itself could be a mixed bag—some reviews mention rough seas, while others say the ride is smooth. If you’re prone to seasickness, bringing medication or choosing a calmer day might help.
The trip was absolutely fantastic. My partner and I had the best time (we had booked seperately). Theodora was very knowledgeable about santorini, she told us many interesting facts about the island. We thought it so beautiful that we would 100% consider going to Santorini on a seperate holiday in order to spend more time wandering places like Fira and Oia.
Kids had a hard time on the ferry there as we hit very rough seas, but the tour guide was friendly and the views breathtaking. We took some anti-nausea meds from a Santorini pharmacy on the way home and the ride was much more pleasant for everyone. Loved it, but be prepared for a rocky boat!
It was a really amazing trip! Sophia is the best!!! She told us many stories and facts, it was all clear and interactive. We had enough time in both towns. It was an unforgettable trip, we are very happy to have booked it! Santorini is a MUST visit ❤️
Once on the island, you’ll be greeted by guides who meet you at the bus and help you navigate the day’s highlights. The tour includes stops at Oia, famous for its whitewashed buildings and blue domes, and Fira, the island’s lively capital with shops, cafes, and panoramic views of the Caldera.
You’ll have about 1.5 hours in Oia and a bit more in Fira—enough time for photos, quick shopping, or just soaking in the views.

Exploring Oia and Fira

Oia is often the star of Santorini, with its packed photo ops and charming streets. The tour offers a guided visit, but you also get free time—something travelers appreciate, especially those who want to wander at their own pace. Several reviews note that the time in Oia feels just right, though some mention it’s a bit rushed.
Still, with about 1.5 hours, you’ll have time for a quick coffee, some pictures, and a stroll among the iconic buildings.
Literally everything was super! Great value for money paid.
Th day trip to Santorini was spectacular. Our guide Christo was very good and advised us of places to eat. We first visited Oia where we took some amazing photos of the blue domed buildings – so pretty. We then were back on the coach to Fira where we had lunch and took the cable car down to the port. Here we also did some shopping. It was a dream to go to Santorini, which did not disappoint. Would highly recommend, but do check how many cruise ships are visiting that day. We went on a day when there was only one so was not too busy.
We got lucky on the day that we went as there were no cruise ship travellers on the island that day. The previous day there way 22,000 visitors on the island and people were queuing to move. Christos was funny and very knowledgeable. We had enough time to explore both towns. We opted not to do the volcano and hot spring tour. It's a beautiful island and well worth the visit. Ferry ride from Heraklio was smooth and took an 1 1/2 hours. Make sure to drink plenty of water, wear a hat and comfortable shoes.
Fira is next, offering a lively vibe and plenty of shops to explore. The guided tour here is complemented by free time to walk around, shop for local products, or simply sit and enjoy the Caldera views. Some travelers enjoyed the opportunity to explore on their own, though they did mention that the schedule can feel tight—so don’t expect hours of leisure.
Optional Volcano Tour – Worth the Extra?

From mid-May onward, the tour offers an optional boat trip to the Santorini Volcano, where you can get up close with the volcanic crater and enjoy swimming in hot springs. This adds a unique dimension, especially if you’re interested in the island’s geological history.
Several reviews mention how enjoyable and scenic this boat cruise is, though some note that the hot springs aren’t exactly “hot” and the experience can be a bit rushed.
Keep in mind, this is an additional charge, so if this interests you, plan accordingly. For many, it’s a highlight—something that elevates the trip from sightseeing to an active adventure. If you prefer to skip it, the tour still covers the major villages, making it a solid value.
Definitely recommend it! Really enjoyed the tour in Santorini ! The transportation was so well planned! Wear a swimsuit if you want to swim in the hot springs! That was very refreshing after all day exploring Santorini!
It is a very long day but definitely worth it! Got picked up at 5:50am and then got back around 8pm. From getting on the bus to going to the ferry and meeting our guide everything was so smooth. Christo was amazing, showed us all the best places/where to get pictures.
Liliia was such a great and funny tour guide. I signed up to this tour as a young female solo traveller, who wanted to visit Santorini for the day and this worked out cheaper than booking it all separately myself. I have 0 expectations for the coach trip itself but ended up really enjoying it due to Liliia's fascinating facts and engaging language. The trip was well so well organised and well worth the money. I was looking more forward to Oia than Thira, but ended up enjoying the latter more as it was bigger, just as atmospheric and pretty, and had more restaurants, bars and cafes. Would highly recommend and will certainly sign up to more in the future now! Also highly recommend to other sol…
Transportation and Timing – The Long Day

The tour spans roughly 10 to 11.5 hours, starting early with pickups around 5:40–7:05 AM, depending on your location. This means a very early start, but it pays off with ample time on the island and a well-structured schedule. The ferry back to Crete is around 6:00 PM, while to Rethymno, it’s approximately 7:30 PM.
Transportation between the ports and the villages is via coach, and the group sizes are typically large enough to feel comfortable but not overly crowded. Some reviews mention issues with logistics, like ticket mix-ups or bus driver conflicts, but these seem to be exceptions rather than the rule.

Many travelers point out that guides like Sophia, Christo, and Liliia are knowledgable and engaging, making the long day more enjoyable. The views—especially of the Caldera—are consistently praised, and the chance to see both Oia and Fira with minimal fuss makes this trip ideal for first-timers or those short on time.
For value-minded visitors, the price of around $200 per person covers transportation, ferry tickets, and guided tours, which is fair considering the convenience. Some reviews note that the experience feels well-organized, and even if parts of the day are rushed, it’s still a worthwhile way to see some of Santorini’s best sights.
We went in October so not the high peak season. The transportation was good and very organised with clear instructions. The boat transfer was very rough water going to Santorini but not coming back. Many people were sick. On the island it is definitely beautiful and very organised. It is expensive on the island but you should expect this. Our guide was fantastic. Very informative, clear English speaking and funny. It is a very long day. We were picked up at 6am and dropped back at 8.45pm. Even though the trip is not cheap it is well worth it. Highly recommend this tour.
Great way to see Santorini in a day! Good recommendations for eating spots and sight seeing from the guide
Collected from Hersonissos @6:30am and back home @7:45pm. Full day trip had fun, organised very well with pickup and drop offs. Visited the Santorini iconic spots had 1.5hr in Oia and 2hr in Fira which was enough for us (didn’t do volcano tour) . Christos was our tour guide gave us lots of information. We went on a Sunday 1st Sep and Santorini wasn’t that busy at all. Santorini a bit overrated but worth it for us instead of going for a week holiday, too expensive to stay over there. 10/10 trip very happy.
