If you’re visiting Greece and want to experience one of its most iconic archaeological sites, a guided day trip to Delphi from Athens is a popular choice. This tour promises a full day of exploring the legendary UNESCO-listed ruins, learning about ancient Greek mythology, and soaking in some stunning mountain views.
Based on a variety of reviews and details, we’ll give you the inside scoop so you can decide if it fits your travel style.
What we really like about this tour is its balanced mix of history, scenery, and comfort. The guided approach ensures you won’t get lost in the ruins or museum, and the included entrance tickets save you time and hassle. Also, the option to upgrade to a multi-course lunch with mountain vistas adds a nice touch for those looking for a more complete experience.
Wonderful experience- the views are beyond incredible! Nancy was a wonderful host. Would definitely recommended
There is alot of stairs to the top. The view of the valley is awesome. The museum was really interesting.
We took this tour to get out of Athens for a day. Vickie made the tour interesting with history and culture and stories of the characters of Greek mythology.
One thing to consider is the long travel time—it’s roughly a 2.5-hour drive each way, so it’s not suited for everyone, especially if you find long bus rides tiring. The group size maxes out at 49, which is reasonably intimate, but still a large group compared to smaller, more personalized tours.
This trip works best for history buffs, scenery lovers, and travelers who enjoy a well-organized day out, especially if you’re okay with some time on the bus.

What to Expect on the Delphi Day Trip from Athens

This tour kicks off early in the morning, with hotel pickup (if your hotel qualifies) and a comfortable coach equipped with Wi-Fi, making the lengthy drive easier to bear. The journey into the Greek mountains is quite scenic, giving you a taste of the countryside and small towns along the way. Expect about 2.5 hours of travel each way, with occasional stops for bathroom breaks or sightseeing.
Once you arrive at Delphi, you’ll be guided through what is arguably Greece’s most famous archeological site. Your guide will point out key ruins, including the Temple of Apollo, which is the star of the show.
We’d heard that Delphi was a must-see for our trip to Athens, but thought the area was underwhelming, especially compared to our guided tour of the Acropolis. The drive was lovely, through interesting mountains and countryside, and the guide did her best when she didn’t have any technology (all the other tours used a headset and receiver to be able to hear the guide’s voice) to speak to us as we were walking through the ruins and museum, but most of us couldn’t hear what she was saying.
This was a fabulous tour through a mountainous region to Delphi. Spectacular views. Our guide, Jordan, was extremely knowledgeable and was gracious in answering many questions. He was as good through the ruins as in the museum. The ruins, were a look back in time we can only imagine . There was alot of steep climbing, but with the right shoes (good runners), it was no problem. I'm 70, and I could keep up with the rest. I had been doing alot of walking, to prepare for these climbs….a huge help, and a huge recommendation. Well worth the money. Lunch was amazing!
Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. She provided history of Greece and the regions we traveled through as well as of Delphi itself.
Keep in mind that the tour doesn’t include the Pronaia and Tholos, located about a mile away from the main site, so if those are on your must-see list, you’ll need to explore them on your own later.

The Ruins and the Site
Standing in front of the Temple of Apollo, you’ll likely feel a sense of awe at its dramatic mountain setting. The guide will explain its significance as the “Center of the World” in ancient Greece. The site is quite extensive, but the guided tour will help you make sense of the ruins, sculptures, and their stories.
The length of your visit here is roughly 1 hour 30 minutes, giving you enough time to take photos and soak in the atmosphere without feeling rushed.
The Archaeological Museum
Next, your group will visit the Delphi Archaeological Museum. The museum houses priceless artifacts like the Charioteer of Delphi and the Sphinx of Naxos. Your guide will help you navigate and point out the most important pieces, making the museum visit both educational and engaging.
A lot of walking, but worth it. It was a really nice break from the city. Our guide was very informative!
The pluses. Delphi itself was amazing to see. The area is beautiful. With respect to the tour itself. Our driver did an amazing job. Our tour guide was excellent. Our meal was abundant to say the least. Basically, all you could eat and it was very good. The minuses. Traffic in the area was "very" slow moving. The pick up and drop off for this tour needs some work. We were picked up on one bus, moved to another bus and we did a lot of sitting and waiting in the process. When you have a 50 seat bus, offering individual pick up and drop off may be convenient for some, but for most it means spending an extra hour on the bus. That is the reason I gave it the rating I did.
Thorough discussion/information throughout the tour. Our guide Ellie was very good – knowledgeable and fun personality. Delphi is a spectacular spot – worth the trip. Two issues – we did the lunch option and would not recommend. Main course chicken was dry – town of Delphi had plenty of options that looked better and also with beautiful views of the valley. Bus ride I quite long – so be prepared – I would also recommend to. Viator that they find a more interesting stop on the way up – did not need 30 minutes at a generic roadside general store.
Reviewers have appreciated how knowledgeable the guide was, with one mentioning that their guide, Eleni, was “very knowledgeable about Delphi, surrounding area, and its history.”
Scenic Towns and Lunch Break
On the way back, you’ll make a stop in Arachova, a charming mountain town famous for its picturesque streets and scenic views. This is a great opportunity for some quick photos and a breath of fresh mountain air. If you’ve booked the lunch upgrade, this is also when you’ll enjoy a multi-course meal with stunning vistas—tasty, fresh, and a nice way to relax after exploring.
Additional Stops
Levadia is included in the itinerary, but the main focus remains on Delphi and Arachova. The tour is paced well, with enough time for sightseeing and breaks, though some reviews mention waiting times and minor delays, especially after lunch.

Detailing the Experience: The Good and the Not-So-Good

The guides are consistently praised for their knowledgeability and engaging storytelling. One reviewer said, “Eleni was very knowledgeable about Delphi, surrounding area, and its history. What a great day.” Having an expert guide enriches the experience, making the ruins and museum pieces come alive with context.
The trip is wel organized. Guide is clear and patient, friendly. We have had a great experience. Strongly recommend.
Yota was fabulous! Her energy, knowledge, and humor made our experience very memorable! She really knows her history, and is exceptional at painting a picture in your mind of what happened throughout various periods of Greek culture. We give her two thumbs up and highly recommend her as a guide. We were in awe of the ruins of Delphi and her guided tour of the museum was amazing.!
Absolutely amazing experience, would definitely recommend the trip. The drive is a bit long, but definitely worth it to see the Temple of Apollo and the Delphi museum.
Many travelers also appreciated the comfortable transportation, with one reviewer noting the coach was “air-conditioned,” which is a relief considering the Greek summer heat. The Wi-Fi onboard is a thoughtful touch, allowing you to check messages or share photos during the drive.
The value for money is generally seen as good, especially since entry tickets are included, and if you upgrade to the lunch option, it rounds out the day nicely. The cost of around $62 per person is reasonable for a full-day guided tour of such an important site.
However, the long bus ride is a drawback for some. Several reviews mention the drive as being “long” and “fatiguing,” especially in hot weather. A few also noted that the seating in the small buses (Mercedes mini buses with 19 seats) isn’t as spacious as larger coaches, which can make the journey uncomfortable for taller or larger travelers.
Timing is another factor. Some guests felt that the schedule could be tighter; for example, waiting for the bus after lunch or delays in boarding. One reviewer pointed out that “timings could have been better,” and that waiting in the sun was less than ideal.
This was a wonderful tour. Rose was very knowledgeable and pleasant. We will recommend you to all our friends!
There is a lot of climbing stairs but the view is worth it – and the ruins are amazing, the history fascinating
wonderful experience led by Demietri as our guide and another Demietri as a driver too. Long 11 hour day but amazing sights and history in Delphi.
Food and dining options are generally positive if you choose the upgrade. The included multi-course lunch offers authentic Greek flavors in a scenic setting, and many reviews describe it as “fabulous” and “tasty.” If you skip it, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to grab your own meal in Arachova or pack snacks.
The Wrap-up: Who Is This Tour Best For?

This full-day trip to Delphi is great for history buffs, mythology enthusiasts, and travelers who want a guided, structured experience. It’s also great for those who value convenience—the included tickets, hotel pickup, and guided commentary make logistics much easier, especially if you're unfamiliar with local transport.
That said, if long bus rides or slightly rigid schedules don’t suit your style, you might find this trip a bit tiring. The tour's pace is fairly organized, and the group size allows for some social atmosphere without feeling overly crowded.
The optional lunch option adds value, especially if you enjoy local food and scenic views, making this a well-rounded day for those wanting more than just a visit to ancient ruins.
