If you’re after a day trip that combines wildlife viewing, lush mangroves, and a relaxing beach afternoon, the Excursion to the Celestún Biosphere and Beach Day from Mérida could be just what you’re looking for. While I haven’t personally taken this tour, reviews and descriptions paint a pretty appealing picture for anyone craving a blend of nature and downtime.
Two things we really like about this experience are the guided boat tour through the vibrant estuary, which promises the chance to see flamingos in their natural habitat, and the beach day at Celestún, complete with nice facilities and good food options. The tour’s small-group vibe means you’ll get more personalized attention, which always makes for a better experience.
However, one thing to consider is that admission fees for the biosphere and boat rides aren’t included in the price—you’ll need cash on hand (about 500 pesos). This can be a little inconvenient if you’re not prepared, so packing some cash beforehand is a smart move.
Excellent trip and got to see so much beautiful wildlife. The flamingos were the highlight but we were also lucky enough to see raccoons, hummingbirds and a croc.
The boat ride on lagoon to see flamingos is extraordinary. We saw thousands on a cloudy, windy day! Boat also took us to spots along the mangroves to see other birds, through an amazing mangrove “tunnel” where the root structures alone were 12 to 20’ high. Then we got off boat at dock and boardwalk and went along a cenote and saw crocodile, five types of herons, and a kingfisher. Then went to spot where Rosetta Spoonbills were roosting, with more egrets and herons. So, fabulous up close bird spotting by our guide in places known and selected by our knowledgeable boatman. Excellent experience. It was not a beach day, but the restaurant served good food, excellent staff, and everyone en…
The biosphere part was our favorite. Our guide, Sergio, who was also our guide on our favorite viator excursion to Uxmal and 2 cenotes, was a fun, friendly, smart and educated host. He made these daytrips very worthwhile… and we met some fun people on these excursions as well. Sergio had the best smile and was an excellent driver as well!

Starting Out: From Mérida to the Biosphere
Your day begins at a centrally located meeting point—Starbucks Paseo Montejo—around 9:00 am. The air-conditioned vehicle whisks you away to Celestún, which is roughly a 45-minute drive from Mérida, depending on traffic. The comfort of the transport is a plus, especially if you’re coming after a busy morning or are tired from prior activities.
The small group size means you’ll likely get to know your guide and fellow travelers quickly, creating a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Reviews highlight guides like Eric and Sergio for their friendliness, knowledge, and willingness to go the extra mile—picking people up from Airbnbs or sharing plenty of local facts.
Exploring the Celestún Biosphere
Once at the biosphere, you’ll switch gears from land to water—in this case, hopping onto a guided boat tour. This is definitely the star of the experience, as you’ll venture through mangroves, bird islands, and estuaries. The main highlight? Watching flamingos strut about in their natural habitat, which many reviews mention as a truly memorable sight.
Reviews from travelers like David and Beth praise this part of the trip. David states, “We got to see younger flamingos and the boat tour was fun,” and Beth notes that their guide, Eric, made sure everyone had what they needed. The boat ride lasts about two hours, and although the admission ticket isn’t included in the price, most guests find it worthwhile for the chance to observe wildlife in such a natural setting.
Expect to see other bird species and perhaps crocodiles—if you’re lucky, with your guide’s help, you’ll get great photo opportunities. The natural springs visited along the way add an extra layer of interest, giving a taste of the area’s biodiversity.
Our tour of the Celestún Biosphere was absolutely unforgettable. Jorge, the guide, was a trained biologist, and his expertise truly elevated the experience—every explanation about the ecosystem, wildlife, and conservation efforts was clear, insightful, and fascinating. Beyond his knowledge, he was incredibly kind and patient, making sure everyone felt comfortable and engaged throughout the tour. The highlight was witnessing an astonishing flock of around 4,000 flamingos gathered together—a breathtaking sight that felt almost unreal. Seeing them in their natural habitat, while learning about their behavior and environment from someone so passionate and knowledgeable, made the experience …
Wonderful excursion with Jorge as our amazing tour guide. We saw thousands of pink flamingos, along with many other bird species. We went into a mangrove where we saw more than just birds…An alligator, fish in the crystal clear waters and so much more. Jorge was very knowledgeable in all aspects of the tour and easy to understand. Even on a cloudy day, this was a stellar excursion, thanks to Jorge. Muchas gracias Jorge @
An amazing day. Request Jorge. Excellent English and vast knowledge of environment and animals. Small group trip where you get to meet other people. On top of the trip cost you will need to pay 500 pesos per person for entrance and boat fees. Plus you will need to pay for your lunch and beverage. A very worthwhile trip. It is a full day
Transition to the Beach
After the boat tour, you'll hop back into the van for a quick 20-minute drive to Playa Norte in Celestún, where the real relaxation begins. The beach setting here is described as feeling somewhat private, with facilities that include loungers, showers, pools, hammocks, and a restaurant—making it easy to unwind without the need to bring your own gear.
The tour includes access to these amenities, which means you can lounge, swim, or just soak in the coastal views without worrying about extra costs. Many reviews, like Ashia’s, mention how accommodating the guides are—Eric, in particular, is praised for his kindness and attentiveness.
Lunch and Leisure Time
While lunch isn't included in the tour price, there's plenty of opportunity to purchase local food at the beach club. The options are generally well-reviewed, and given the relaxed pace, you’ll have about three hours here to swim, sunbathe, or explore the shoreline.
It's worth noting that the beach itself is described as quite beautiful and feels exclusive or intimate, which is a nice perk for those wanting a quieter, more personal beach experience compared to busy tourist spots.
Returning to Mérida
The tour wraps up in the late afternoon, and you'll be taken back to the original meeting point. Travelers often mention how smoothly everything runs, thanks to the efficient transportation and attentive guides.
Who Will Love This Tour?
This trip is perfect if you're keen on wildlife, natural landscapes, and a laid-back beach vibe. It's especially suitable for those who appreciate small-group adventures with personalized guides, making it easier to ask questions and learn about the environment you're exploring.
If you enjoy spotting flamingos, seeing mangroves, or just want a hassle-free day at the coast, this tour ticks a lot of boxes. While it’s not tailored for those seeking high-adrenaline activities or extensive cultural stops, it offers a peaceful, scenic day out that balances observation with relaxation.
The Value Proposition

Considering the $64.13 per person price, the tour offers solid value, especially given the inclusion of transportation, a guided boat tour, and access to beach facilities. The boat ride alone, which is often a highlight, is a memorable experience, and many reviewers feel that the friendly guides enhance the trip significantly.
The cash-only fees for the biosphere and boat rides are an extra step, but most travelers agree they are reasonable for the quality of wildlife viewing you get. The small group size means fewer crowds and more personal attention, which can make a big difference in a relaxed day like this.
Final Thoughts: Who Should Book This?

If you're after a relaxing day with a focus on nature and wildlife, this tour offers a balanced mix of adventure and leisure. It's well-suited for travelers who appreciate guided trips with knowledgeable hosts, want to see flamingos and other bird species, and enjoy spending the afternoon unwinding at a beautiful beach.
While it might not be ideal if you’re on a tight budget (due to the extra cash payments for fees), most find the experience worth it for the unforgettable wildlife encounters and the relaxing coastal setting. It’s also a fantastic option for those who prefer small groups and personal service over large, crowded tours.
