If you’re a fan of the iconic 1980s teen comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, or just love seeing how movies connect with real-world locations, this tour might catch your eye. It’s a guided, small-group experience that walks you through the Art Institute of Chicago, revealing how this art-filled museum starred in one of Hollywood’s most beloved films.

What we really like about this tour is how it balances film fandom with a solid art experience. You’re not just walking through a museum — you’re exploring the film’s scenes with a guide who has a background in film studies, which means you’ll get insightful stories and behind-the-scenes tidbits. Plus, the tour includes Instagram-worthy moments and a few Ferris-themed goodies that add a fun touch.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that admission to the Art Institute isn’t included in the ticket price, so you’ll need to purchase your tickets separately. But if you’re prepared for that, and you love movies and art, this tour offers a unique perspective on both.

We had a fantastic time with Kelly seeing all the familiar art sites from the movie we know and love. Her breadth of knowledge about art and film was evident and she was so well prepared with video clips, quotes from various people involved with the movie, and efficient move through the building ending with the Chagall windows. Highly recommend for fans of the movie or newbies—a great quick move around the museum!

This was more than just pointing out pictures and sculptures that were in Ferris Bueller. Kelli really dove deep into explaining why John Hughs selected this museum and art for the scenes. Kelli took pictures for us and encouraged discussion among all of us. This was definitely a highlight and brought this museum to a whole new level. If you haven’t seen the film in a long time she even had the scenes and showed them to us to refresh our memories. I would highly recommend this tour. Save time afterwards to explore the rest of the museum.

This experience is best suited for film enthusiasts, art lovers, and fans of the movie who want a personal, in-depth look at the museum’s role in the film — and maybe even see a little Chicago magic along the way.

A Deep Dive into the Experience

The tour kicks off inside the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago, where your guide — a knowledgeable film expert — introduces you to the museum’s history and its cinematic significance. From there, you’ll navigate through three floors, stopping at specific galleries and artworks that played roles in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

What makes this tour worthwhile is the storytelling. As you walk, you’ll hear about why John Hughes, the film’s director, selected particular pieces of art for certain scenes. For example, your guide might explain how the placement of certain artworks in the frame was chosen to enhance the storytelling, giving a fresh appreciation for both the movie and the art on display.

You’ll visit 16 key art pieces, each connected to the film in some capacity — whether they appear directly in scenes or serve as visual nods. The tour’s pacing is just right; long enough to cover plenty but not so rushed that you miss the details. Expect to move in and out of galleries, with plenty of time for photos, especially since the tour highlights Instagram opportunities.

The small group size — capped at four travelers — enhances the experience, fostering conversations and allowing you to ask questions freely. Our review mentions that guides are passionate and well-informed, which makes a difference when you’re trying to connect film scenes with actual artworks.
