If you’re planning a trip to the South of France and love good wine, a guided tour through the Côtes du Rhône sounds like a perfect pick. This particular experience, rated 4.8 out of 5 from dozens of reviews, offers a chance to taste some of the region’s best wines across three diverse wineries, including the iconic Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or just looking to enjoy a scenic day out, this tour promises a blend of excellent wines, gorgeous landscapes, and friendly local stories.
What we really appreciate about this experience is how it balances quality with intimacy—you’re in small groups, which means the guide can tailor the experience and share insights more naturally. Plus, the option for a picnic with local products during the warmer months makes the day even more memorable.
Arnaud was very knowledgeable and friendly. As we drove through the landscape, he described much of the natural features that distinguish different wine regions. As we approached each winery, he told us fascinating short histories of each and knew the proprietors very well.
Awesome knowledgeable and welcoming guide who also drove smoothly and safely throughout the tour. Fun small-group wine tastings at 3 locations made for a memorable experience.
The highlight of our tour was hands down Arnaud. He made the afternoon so enjoyable and educational. He was happy to have a laugh, and patient with us wanting to learn to pronounce a few French words. He never made us feel like we needed to rush. The amount of knowledge he has around wine is phenomenal. To top it all off, the three wineries he took us to offered uniqueness which just added to the experience. We can’t recommend this tour enough! Thank you Arnaud!!!
On the flip side, since the tour involves driving between wineries and walking at each stop, it’s worth considering the physical aspect if you have mobility issues or prefer a very relaxed pace.
This tour is best suited for curious travelers who want to learn about regional wines without the fuss of large, commercialized tastings. It’s also great for those who appreciate authentic family-run wineries and enjoy landscapes filled with vines stretching to the horizon.
Keep in mind, it’s not ideal if you’re pregnant or have heart problems, or if you’re traveling with oversized luggage, as the transport has some restrictions.

Starting Point and Ease of Meeting Up

We loved both the variety of vineyards and wines on offer as well as the taste of them. Arnoud has curated a wonderful tour with some very friendly Domaines and in beautiful locations. The Domaines were beautiful, rich in heritage, locally and nationally important, but also felt very private just for us and not just churning through groups of people. His choice in Beaumes de Venise was especially beautiful and rooted in history. Arnoud was a very lovely host who is evidently passionate about not only wine but the region as a whole. As a local he was able to give us more understanding of what we were seeing, the environment and lay of the land, how the land and different microclimates affect …
excellent excursion to three boutique wineries in three appellation. The wines and hospitality were excellent, and our guide was very good. it's more than the wines though. it's an excursion into the countryside, through beautiful villages and seeing chateaus.
Arnoud was knowledgeable, affable and convivial. We was able to answer every question asked by the group. The vineyards we visited were lovely. Wonderful tour.
The Itinerary Breakdown
The tour typically visits three wineries, each with its own character. The sequence might vary (sometimes starting in Châteauneuf du Pape to finish in Beaumes de Venise), but the core stops are:
- Beaumes-de-Venise: Famous for its sweet Muscat de Beaumes de Venise, this winery offers a tasting lasting about 45 minutes. The Muscat here is a real treat, perfect as an aperitif or dessert wine.
Reviewers mention that the staff are friendly and helpful, making the tasting feel more like a visit from friends than a commercial stop.
- Gigondas: Known for producing some of the best reds in the Southern Rhône after Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Here, you’ll spend roughly an hour tasting robust, flavorful wines. The winery visits are often described as intimate, with small family-run estates that take pride in their craft.
One reviewer raved about the “outstanding wineries” and the guiding hand of Arnoud, the host.
- Châteauneuf-du-Pape: The star of the tour for many, this stop features tastings of its iconic red wines, as well as less-known whites.
Cathy★★★★★
Our tour guide was exceptional. He was pleasant and provided lots of pertinent information regarding the wine making area and the vineyards we were to visit. We were disappointed with our stop at the Chateauneuf du Pape winery. It is usually one of favourite wines but the tastings at that particular winery provided young wines for sampling. I would have preferred to pay slightly more for better samples to taste. The previous winery visited proved his best wines and we enjoyed those wines much more than the Chateauneuf de Pape wines.
Arnaldo★★★★★Arnaud, our guide, was very knowledgeable and friendly. The wineries visited were family run, the people running the tastings very informative and easy to understand. We also lucked out with an extremely fun group of 6! Arnaud served a delicious brunch of produce from around his town – all local cal delicacies were tasty.
Helen★★★★★The variety of vineyards and the great explanations of the area and wines as we drove through.
The guide will share the story behind this famous appellation, and you’ll get a chance to taste the wines in a setting that’s both historic and picturesque.
Visitors often highlight the quality of wines here and the educational aspect of learning about the region’s unique terroir.
The Picnic Experience
If your tour starts in the morning between April and October, you’ll enjoy a picnic featuring regional products like fresh eggs, tapenade, goat cheese, seasonal fruits, and local juices. Reviewers say this adds a lovely, convivial vibe—sharing local flavors amid vineyard views, which really rounds out the experience. It’s a good chance to relax and chat with your fellow travelers before the final stops.
More Great Tours NearbyWhat the Reviews Say
Multiple reviewers highlight the knowledge and friendliness of guides, describing Arnoud as “very knowledgeable” and “great with questions.” His ability to make the group comfortable and to go off-script—like taking an impromptu visit to a castle—really stands out.
Excellent tour! Arnoud was a great tour guide! Very knowledgeable about wine, the wineries, and the region. Also great with answering questions about other tours and what to do and where to go. He also brought local food from his village for the picnic at the second winery. It was longer than expected but I think that was all about him adapting to our questions and pace. He also took us to the castle in Chateauneuf de Pape and that was impromptu because we showed interest. All in all a great tour especially for the price! Merci beaucoup, Arnoud!
Arnold was an amazing guide, made us comfortable and showed us some outstanding wineries. Our favourite had to be the winery in Chateneuf du Pape a real star.
Arnaut was the best guide during 3 excellent wine makers, all of them with impressive wines from specific zones: Chateauneuf du pape, Gigondas and Beaumes de Venise. The choice was clever also by the fact the last winery has a hidden gem based on sweet wines, so everything was exclusive and special. I felt this trip was a private trip by the guide proximity, but the small group was super!!! Unforgettable trip!! 🙏🏻
The wineries themselves are described as varied, from family-run estates to more prominent producers, offering both diversity and intimacy. Guests mention the wines are “excellent” across the board, with some saying their favorites were the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, while others enjoyed the sweet Muscat or the reds from Gigondas.
Travelers particularly appreciate the value for money—a 3 to 5.5-hour tour with tastings, a picnic (when available), and local insights for just over $90. Considering the quality of wines and personalized experience, many feel they got more than what they paid for.
Transportation and Group Size
The mode of transport is a comfortable car, suitable for small groups (max 6 participants). This small group setup means you’ll get more personalized attention from the guide and a less rushed, more relaxed experience.

Who Should Consider This Tour?

If you enjoy learning about regional wines without the hassle of self-driving, this tour checks a lot of boxes. It’s ideal for wine lovers who want to taste a variety of wines from different wineries, especially if they’re interested in the South of France’s most famous appellations.
Amazing tour, visited 3 different Wineries, all with great explanations and a good variety of wine. Guide was extremely knowledgeable, would definitely recommend.
I like almost everything about this trip. the guide was excellent intelligent and well informed car was very comfortable we had an intimate group of five. I would have never thought I a half-day tour could pack so much into that amount of time my favourite was the Chateauneuf-du-Pape winery. I was surprised I didn't enjoy the wines in Gigondas more. but what I liked is that it was an introduction to flavor profiles not familiar to me. Beaumes de Venise winery was incredibly diverse and I believe produced mostly biological wines. this is a great trip provided by an incredible guide don't doubt the idea of going for a second it's wonderful!
Our guide was very friendly, polite and knowledgeable. His English was excellent. He provided a lot of interesting commentary about the area and the wines during the drive and seemed very happy to chat on the return drive. We saw three fantastic wineries and at each one, we encountered friendly and helpful staff. Also, the wine was generally excellent and we learned a lot!
It's also suitable for those who appreciate authentic family wineries over commercialized tasting rooms, and for travelers who love scenic views of vineyards. Keep in mind, if you're looking for a very relaxed, slow-paced day without much walking or driving, this tour might be a bit busy—though most reviews suggest it's well-paced and manageable.
