If you’re planning a trip from Malaga or nearby Spanish coastlines to Gibraltar, chances are you’ve come across this popular full-day tour. While I haven’t personally taken it, based on a thorough look at reviews and the itinerary, it’s a trip that many find well worth their time—especially if you’re interested in iconic sights, friendly monkeys, and a taste of the British overseas territory.

What I love about this tour is how it combines a scenic journey with memorable stops like Saint Michael’s Caves and the famous apes reserve, all included in an accessible price. Plus, the fact that transportation is round-trip from Costa del Sol means you don’t have to worry about logistics.

On the flip side, some have noted that the day can feel quite long, with a significant amount of time spent on the bus. That’s a key point to consider if you prefer shorter travel times or are traveling with young kids.

Very. good tour. The tour guide was very professional and clear with his explanations. Very punctual too. However, the bus was not comfortable enough for such a long trip. The seats have not enough space for the legs for a tall person.

I would definitely recommend this tour. I almost didn’t do it after reading reviews complaining about the stops to collect other passengers but it didn’t take that long. Yes it’s an early start but worth the effort. Covi, the tour guide did a fantastic job as did the driver. We certainly appreciated the coffee stop on the way to Gibraltar especially as once we arrived we went straight on to the Rock tour. The Rock tour was definitely worth doing but more communication from the driver/guide would have been helpful as we didn’t always know how much time we had at some of the stops. Covi made sure that everything went smoothly to and from Gibraltar and that everyone on the bus enjoyed …

The bus ride from Malaga is long with many stops, but the tour of the Rock is excellent. Our local driver (and guide), Francis, was very kind and thoughtful, in addition to being amazing behind the wheel. Only negative feedback is that Ales, who ran the trip from Visitandgo, had us all wait 25 minutes for one family who did not show up at their morning pickup on time. They made their own way to the Gibraltar border, causing a further delay when Ales returned to meet them. Total time from pickup to return for those from Malaga was over 12 hours.

The Journey Begins: Pickup and Travel

From Costa del Sol: The Gibraltar classic Rock tour - The Journey Begins: Pickup and Travel

Starting with a pickup at designated points along the Costa del Sol, the tour’s main challenge is the long bus ride. Many reviews mention that the journey from Málaga to Gibraltar can take several hours, with some travelers saying they spent around 6 to 7 hours on the bus round-trip.

This is mostly because the coach makes stops to pick up and drop off passengers from nearby towns like Torremolinos and Fuengirola, essentially making it a shared ride with multiple groups.

St Michael Cave and finally going to a place I have heard about from my youth. The driver and tour guide were pleasant helpful and informative.

The good: the on coach guide was very good, the tour of Gibraltar was great. The bad: it was a 12 hour day, 6 hours of which were spent on the bus. Left at 7:15am, returning at 7:15pm. The reason was the coach went everywhere picking up and dropping off people. Would have chosen another company if we had known.

Juanjo was a good guide, friendly and attentive. He always was with a smile and patient. Driver was polite as well.

While some find the stops a bit lengthy, the ride itself offers a chance to relax and enjoy the scenery. The air-conditioned transport helps stay comfortable during what can be a lengthy day, as you’re likely to be on the road for about three hours each way.

The driver and guide, according to reviews, are often praised for their professionalism; one reviewer said Francis was kind, thoughtful, and a skilled driver, making the long ride more bearable.

Gibraltar’s Highlights: Landmarks and Sightseeing

Once in Gibraltar, the tour typically starts with a panoramic overview of the area, giving you views of the Punta de Europa and the Rock itself. The tour includes a visit to Saint Michael’s Caves, a stunning network of limestone caverns famous for their impressive formations. Many reviewers describe the caves as “stunning” and a highlight of the trip.

One said the scenery was “fantastic,” and the guide was “friendly and attentive,” making the visit more enjoyable.

The bus driver & guide were both excellent. Guide spoke 5 languages & was very knowledgeable about crossing the border both ways. Great sense of humor. What I asked prior was how long was bus trip- it totals 3 hours with 6 stops along the way just so everyone knows- arrival in Gibraltor about 10:30-(leave 7:15) leave from Gibraltor 3:15- arrive back in Malaga at 6:10. This information on website would be helpful. Bus comfortable but maybe not for people over 6 ft tall. Bus driver up the rock in Gibraltor knowledgeable & fun. Caves, monkeys, botanical gardens & views even on a foggy morning worth the 6 hours of travel time. Hope my review helps the tour operator or others about posting valua…

Next up is the apes reserve, home to Gibraltar’s iconic friendly monkeys. Tourists often love seeing these animals up close, and many reviews highlight the monkeys as a memorable part of the experience. Most sightings seem guaranteed, as they are commonly found along the bus route and around key spots.

You’ll also have free time to explore Gibraltar’s old town. This stroll through narrow streets is often appreciated for its charming vibe and tax-free shopping opportunities. Some reviewers mention that the town can feel small and quite touristy, with shops selling jewelry, perfumes, and souvenirs, but it’s also where you can grab a quick bite or pick up a souvenir.

Guided Commentary and Multilingual Support

One of the tour’s strengths, according to reviews, is the live commentary provided by guides who speak multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and French. Tourists find this helpful for understanding the history and significance of each landmark, especially when crossing the border and learning about local customs.

A reviewer mentioned that the guide spoke “5 languages,” demonstrating the tour’s effort to cater to diverse travelers.

He Gibraltar experience itself (We took the rock tour) was excellent. The bus from Malaga return was a milk run of 7 or 8 stops for pick ups which takes far too long, over 7 hours on the bus. On the return, nearly 4 hours with no bathroom stop was unacceptable. We knew what we signed up for, but, they need to change this offering as half our group originated in Malaga and paid the price with a 13 hour day. Yes there was an accident enroute, beyond everyone's control, however, there is no way they could ever do this trip in the promised 7 to 10 hours. My recommendation is offer a separate trip from Malaga only to Gibraltar, and, another from Costa del Sol for the others that can't come to …

Enjoyed just visiting Gibraltar -it was on our bucket list. The Rock experience with the apes and the cave tour. The music and lights worked well to convey a majestic experience. Impressed at the multi-language guide. Very helpful with all of the information needed to get through customs.

St. Michael's caves. Stunning. Fantastic scenery and a great tour guide. Very informative. Packed a lot of information and good humour into the tour.

The Verdict from Travelers: The Good and the Not-So-Good

Most reviews are positive about the experience itself. Many loved the scenery, the caves, and the guides. One reviewer called it a “great combination of excursion and free time,” which seems to be the overall vibe—there’s enough structured sightseeing paired with time to explore on your own.

However, a few travelers felt the day was overly long, with some citing the bus ride as the main drawback. For instance, someone mentioned that they spent over 7 hours on the bus, which can be tiring, especially if you’re not a fan of lengthy travel days. Another critical point was the lack of a bathroom stop during the return journey, which some found inconvenient.

Some reviews also mention that the tour can feel touristy or “a bit of a trap,” mainly due to the souvenir shops and the small size of Gibraltar’s town. It’s worth noting that the monkeys don’t have a sanctuary, and they tend to go where travelers pass, so sightings are generally guaranteed but not spectacularly wild.
