The Drive Along the Dalton Highway
The highlight of the trip is the journey along this iconic route, stretching over 800 miles. It’s a remote, rough road, so expect bumpy rides but with plenty of opportunities to take in the vast tundra, mountain views, and maybe even spot some local wildlife. Chasing the Northern Lights
Evening activities are all about catching the Aurora Borealis, which is practically a lottery win—not guaranteed but worth the effort. The guides actively scan the sky and pull over when there’s a chance to see the lights, as Jessica and Gavin did for their groups. Many guests rave about how hard guides work to find the lights, but weather and solar activity can still spoil the show. A reviewer from October 2024 admitted the northern lights didn’t show up that night, which reminds us to keep expectations flexible.
The trip was excellent. I was picked up at my hotel on time, greeted with a friendly smile and my excitement for the trip was fulfilled. Jessica, our tour guide was TOPS!!! She was so friendly, jovial, excited and just so knowledgeable about Alaska, The Arctic Circle, The Pipeline and anything else she had to offer. No matter what questions were asked Jessica provided such interesting answers. I learned so much from her. Her driving skills on the Dalton Highway were phenomenal. Myself, I would have been terrified driving. I felt safe and comfortable with Jessica as our tour guide. Jessica, would even pull over to look at the sky with the hope we would be able to see the Aurora. It didn’t h…
The guide was really skilled at driving along the world's most dangerous road (adalton highway) and really informative about everything. We got to see the best northern lights i have ever seen on this tour… the only improvement would be for guides to have access to 4×4 vehicles, as there was one point where going off road would have been great to chase the lights, but the 2 wheel drive that the company uses can't do that.
what I most liked was the timing and schedule of the tour, the selection of stops, the Commentry by Gavin, the guide and his commitment to deliver on the guests' expectations from the tour. Gavin was very knowledgeable about the area to include details about the Trans Alaska Pipeline, the flora and fauna of the region and shared interesting bits of information all along the way to keep the guests engaged. Gavin seemed determined to ensure that we all got to witness the Northern Lights and he made it happen. Lastly, Gavin was a very safe driver and the whole experience was smooth….
Return and Reflection
After a long day, you’ll head back to Fairbanks, often exhausted but full of stories and new knowledge about Alaska’s wilderness. The tour ends with a drop-off at your hotel, and many reviews mention feeling well cared for throughout the trip.
The Value and Practicalities

Price and What It Includes
At $330 per person, this tour offers a comprehensive experience that includes hotel pickup, snacks, hot beverages, and a special certificate. Considering the length of the trip, the remote destinations, and the personalized small-group setting, it’s reasonably priced. Many travelers comment that they felt it was good value for the experience, especially with knowledgeable guides who go the extra mile—like trying to spot the Aurora or explaining the region’s history.
Group Size and Transportation
Limited to just 8 participants, the small group size means more personalized attention and better chances to ask questions. The vehicle has been praised for its driving, even on tricky roads. Still, some reviews mention that the vehicle can be cramped, especially for taller or larger travelers, which is worth considering if you're sensitive to space.
Duration and Suitability
A full 14-hour day, so it’s best for those who enjoy long scenic drives and are comfortable sitting for extended periods. The trip isn’t suitable for children under 9, or for people with mobility or back problems. If you’re okay with a long day of adventure and don’t mind the road conditions, it’s a rewarding experience.
Weather and Northern Lights
The most unpredictable part? The Northern Lights. Guides do their best, but cloud cover or low solar activity can prevent sightings. That said, many guests appreciated the guides’ effort and still found the trip worthwhile for the scenery and learning.
What the Reviews Say

Guests consistently praise the guides, especially Jessica, Gavin, and Logan, for their friendliness, knowledge, and safety skills. Many mention how memorable the landscapes are, with some calling it an “outstanding” experience. The Aurora chase gets mixed reviews—some see spectacular displays, others don’t see much at all, which is a reminder to keep expectations realistic.
A recurring theme is the long ride—some found the van a bit cramped, but everyone agrees the stops and the scenery are worth it. Reviewers also appreciate the flexibility of the itinerary, which allows guides to make spontaneous stops to maximize photo opportunities or search for the lights.
The Bottom Line

This tour from Fairbanks is best suited for travelers who want to combine a scenic drive with a taste of Alaska’s wild side, and who appreciate a small-group experience with personalized attention. The guides’ deep knowledge and their efforts to see the Aurora make this trip stand out. The long hours might be challenging, but many guests find that the landscapes, the Arctic crossing, and the potential Northern Lights more than compensate.
If you’re after a well-organized, memorable adventure that offers both education and the thrill of the unknown, this could be a good pick. Just remember, the Aurora is never guaranteed, but the journey itself — with its stunning scenery and expert guides — often is.
