Wow! What a fantastic day! One of the best holiday day trips my husband and I have been on . Our guide Jorge was very knowledgable and informative. We had lots of stops and never felt rushed, the off roading in the forest was a great experience . Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend especially if Jorge is your guide!
We had an amazing day out with Jorge in his Landrover. He is such a nice guy and he has a great knowledge of the island, its history and culture. It was a really exhilarating tour with plenty of off road driving. We really loved it. Great fun!
Jorge was a very professional driver and new exactly how to drive his 4×4 making best use of it's capabilities. the was extremely knowledgeable filling us with fun facts about Madeira and some of the people who live here. it was clear the tour drivers share a great camaraderie no matter which company they are from. Our day was full of adventure from rollercoaster roads to magnificent views and scenery. The day just kept on giving. Highly recommended.
Two things we love about this trip? First, the way it combines spectacular panoramic views with a sense of adventure — thanks to the open-roof Jeep that lets you really soak in the scenery. Second, the personal touch the guide provides, especially with homemade poncha and cookies, which makes the whole day feel more authentic and cozy.
One thing to keep in mind? The tour involves some off-road driving over rugged terrain, which might be rougher than some travelers expect. If you’re prone to back issues or aren’t comfortable with bumpy rides, it’s worth considering.

The Start: Pickup and Setting Off
Most tours kick off with hotel or cruise dock pickup in Funchal, which is really convenient if you’re staying in the city or arriving by cruise. They ask you to be ready in the lobby about 30 minutes before your scheduled pickup time, so it’s a good idea to be punctual.
From there, you’ll hop into a small, open-roof Jeep that seats up to six, ensuring you’re not cramped and can enjoy the ride comfortably.
We a lovely day out with Jorge. Plenty of interesting stops so we were never in the keep for too long. Jeorge was very knowledgeable and adaptable to our requirements. We loved all of it but our favourites were the swimming pools at Porto Moniz and Fanal forest. Although we are hiring a car for the later part of our stay in Madeira, doing this trip was really helpful to get a sense of driving in Madeira and local tips. Being in the open top jeep allowed us to go off road and get to places we not have been able to access otherwise. Overall a great trip that we would definitely recommend. Thanks Jeorge !
I honestly couldn’t fault any of the experience. We were contacted the evening before confirming the time of pick up at our hotel and he arrived exactly on time. The guide was fab, great sense of humour and very knowledgable on our journey. We stopped at many places along the way to see the sights and take photos, and given ample time. We had a great little pit stop to watch a lady make Poncha and got to try it which was fab and soooo much nicer than the bottles stuff we got elsewhere. When we stopped at Porto moniz the guide before heading off to take some time out made sure we were all set with a light lunch as quickly as possible to give maximum time in the pools. The whole day was bril…
Incredible day, Jorge is an amazing, very helpful charismatic. He offered us an experience we will remember for long time! Will definitely book in the future with him!
Exploring Madeira’s Iconic Cliffs and Forests
One of the tour’s standout features is visiting Cabo Girao, one of the world’s highest sea cliffs. The panoramic views from there are breathtaking, especially with the ocean stretching endlessly below. This stop is great for photos and taking in the scale of Madeira’s rugged coastline.
Next, the route takes you to Seixal, a small village famed for its black sand beach and lush surroundings. Here, you’ll get more scenic vistas and the chance to snap some pictures of the coastline, as well as maybe dip your toes in the sand if you like.
Off-Road Adventures and Hidden Gems
What sets this tour apart is the off-road component. Your trusty Jeep will take you through less accessible terrain — forests, rocky paths, and hidden spots you wouldn’t reach by regular car. Several reviews mention the thrill of these off-road sections, with one saying it’s “not for the faint-hearted,” but most find it exciting and a highlight of the trip.
Jorge, the guide, is praised for his skilled driving and good humor, making these moments fun rather than nerve-wracking. He also stops along the way to prepare fresh Poncha, a local sugarcane spirit, right in the forest — a genuine, homemade experience that visitors seem to love.
More Great Tours NearbyThe Natural Pools of Porto Moniz
No trip to Madeira is complete without a stop at the famous Porto Moniz natural saltwater pools. This is usually the longest pause in the itinerary, giving you the chance to swim in the cool, mineral-rich waters or just relax on the rocks and enjoy the views.
Many reviewers talk about how the pools are like nature’s Jacuzzi, and it’s clear that this is a big highlight for visitors. The pools are well-known and have been a must-see for years, so be prepared to share the space with other visitors, especially in peak season.
The Enchanting Fanal Forest and Other Stops
Driving through Fanal Forest is another special moment. It’s often described as a “fairytale” setting, with tall laurel trees shrouded in mist. Visitors say it’s great for a walk and taking atmospheric photos — just remember to pack a jacket as it can get chilly and foggy.
The route also includes stops at Ponta do Sol, a picturesque coastal town, and other scenic view points, giving a well-rounded view of the island’s diverse landscapes.
Who the Tour Fits Best
This experience is ideal if you’re someone who wants more than just a bus tour — you want to experience Madeira’s terrain firsthand, with the added bonus of local flavors and expert storytelling. The small group format makes it intimate, and the off-road sections offer a real sense of adventure.
However, it’s not suited to travelers with back problems, pregnant women, or wheelchair users, as some parts involve bumpy driving and navigating uneven terrain. Also, if you’re not comfortable with outdoor elements or off-road driving, keep that in mind.
The Value of the Tour: Is It Worth It?

At $73 per person, this tour offers a solid mix of scenic vistas, cultural tastings, and adventure. The reviews highlight amazing driver skill, friendly guidance, and the ability to see many highlights in one day. The inclusive touches — like Poncha and homemade cookies — add to the experience’s authenticity and warmth.
The itinerary is well-paced, with enough time at each stop. The small group size generally means more personal attention and fewer crowds, which many travelers appreciate. Keep in mind that entry fees to certain attractions and lunch are optional, so you can tailor the day to your preferences and budget.
