Exploring Elafonissi Beach from Rethymno: A Practical Guide to a Stunning Crete Day Trip

If you’re dreaming of visiting one of Crete’s most famous beaches, the Elafonissi Pink Sand Beach Tour from Rethymno might just be your best bet. While I haven’t personally taken this exact trip, I’ve read plenty of reviews and gathered the details to help you decide if it’s right for your holiday plans.

What really catches our eye about this tour are the beautiful, unique scenery of Elafonissi’s pink sands and the convenience of a guided full-day experience. You get to relax on the beach without worrying about transportation or navigating Crete’s winding roads, and you’ll pass through some charming villages along the way.

The trip was amazing! The transport was very well organised with various stops where we had the chance to see interesting things, get local products and relax. Our guide Lazarus and the chauffeur Kostas made sure we are well informed and safe throughout the journey. The Elafonisi beach itself is absolutely awesome – most of the pink sand might be gone due to tourists but it is still like a piece of Paradise. Make sure to actually go to the islet of Elafonisi rather than stay on Crete side to enjoy to the fullest. Lovely sea and lagoon. We even had some live music in the bus on the way back and a stopover for delicious lunch. Wonderful experience all around, would repeat it with pleasure.

The trip was excellent, highly recommended for the guide and the driver. You have 4 hours at the beach, but it takes about 20 minutes to go down to it and then back up, so in reality, you have only 3 hours, which is too short for such a beach. An extra 2 hours on the beach would make it ideal; as it is, you feel like you have to leave just as you’ve arrived.

Lazarus&Dimitri made my day. Elafonissi is little paradise with pink sand. We enjoyed every moment. Food in little village elos was delicious, especialy I recomended goat tsigariastó (stew goat with vine and herbs). You need to see while there is still some pink sand.

A small downside? The beach can get crowded and hot—especially during peak season—so if you’re looking for quiet solitude or visiting in the height of summer, that’s something to consider.

If you enjoy scenic drives, cultural stops, and relaxing days at a gorgeous beach, this tour offers a practical and enjoyable way to tick it all off your Crete bucket list. It’s especially suitable for travelers who prefer having things organized for them but still want plenty of free time to soak up the sun.

From Rethymno/Kavros: Elafonissi Pink Sand Beach Tour - The Itinerary: What You Can Expect on This Day Trip

This tour combines scenic drives, cultural insights, and plenty of relaxing beach time. Starting early, you’ll be picked up from your hotel—coverage is quite extensive, from Rethymno city to nearby villages like Kavros, Platanias, and even Georgioupoli. If you’re staying in one of these areas, you’re likely to find the pickup straightforward and punctual.

The first stop is a traditional village called Elos. Here, you’ll have a chance to stretch your legs, and if you wish, enjoy a quick coffee or breakfast (cost not included). Many reviews appreciate this as a nice touch, as it breaks up the drive and helps you get a feel for authentic Crete. It’s a good moment to snap some photos of the rustic scenery and start getting excited about the day ahead.

Arrival at Elafonissi

Once you arrive at the beach, you’re given around 4 hours of free time. That might sound like a lot, but trust us, it’s just right for swimming, sunbathing, or exploring the pink sands. The beach’s soft white and pink sand is impressive and makes for some incredible photos. The water is crystal-clear and shallow, great for wading or floating around in comfort.

The trip was very nice, the tour guide, Anastasia was so helpful and nice, explaining us also tiny bits of Greece history. The beach is beautiful and the driver was also very good, considering we are usually car sick and the roads are tiny. Beautiful scenery, I would totally recommend!
Andrea
Best trip. Both the guide and the driver were professional. Everything went perfect❤️

Many travelers love how spectacular the shades of blue are—"a heaven on earth," as one reviewer put it. Keep in mind, the beach can be crowded, and sunbeds or shaded spots might be limited, especially in summer. Bringing your own umbrella or sunshade is a smart idea, as not all beds are available.

Food and Refreshments

While the tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off, food and drinks are not included. On the way back, there's a stop at Kaloudiana village, where you can explore, grab a snack, or have a drink (not included). We’ve seen comments praising the local tavernas and the relaxing village atmosphere, which can be an excellent way to unwind after a day at the beach.

End of the Day

After some leisure time, the bus heads back to Rethymno, with most travelers feeling the day was well-organized and smoothly executed. Many reviews mention the friendly guides and drivers making the journey enjoyable. One review even highlights how the driver managed mountain roads expertly, turning what could be a stressful drive into a fun part of the trip.
