Awesome trip — both our guides were fantastic! Special thanks to Caroline for sharing so much history along the way and for driving us safely back. I hope I’ve spelled your name correctly — apologies if not! 🤗 If you’re in Iceland, I highly recommend this trip. The Katla ice cave was truly the cherry on top. Our guide, Bead, was amazing — he made sure we had fun throughout the entire hike!
Our tour guide was fantastic! We did the south coast and Katla ice cave. We started our tour with an amazing lady guide who was super funny and very informative, professional and helpful. We went to the waterfalls and the Black sand beach. We then swapped vehicle and tour guides and Fredrico took us in a modified vehicle over to Katla glacier. He was equally as funny, informative and very good at what he does. His driving was fantastic, it was such an experience! Information from Troll.is was superb, picked up at the bus stop on time and dropped off in the same place. We took a packed lunch and had it on the black sand beach which was a windy experience! Don’t worry about toilets, there ar…

Starting Out: Pickup and Journey
Your day begins with a hotel pickup from central Reykjavik, usually around 8:00 AM. The minibus is comfortable and modern, making the long drive more pleasant. During the journey, your guide will set the scene with stories about Iceland’s geology and volcanic activity, building up anticipation for the adventures ahead.
The drive from Reykjavik to the South Coast takes about two hours, giving you ample time to settle in and enjoy the scenery. It’s a good way to start soaking in Iceland’s changing landscape, from urban to rugged wilderness.
Waterfalls and Black Sand Beaches
One of the first stops is at Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall where you can walk behind the cascading water for a different perspective. Many reviewers comment positively on the place, noting how photogenic and powerful it is. You’ll have about 30 minutes here — enough time to snap some photos, stretch your legs, and take in the sight.
Next, the group heads to Skogafoss, another impressive waterfall with a wide cascade and a staircase leading to a panoramic view. With around 40 minutes here, you can explore the area, admire the spray, and appreciate the raw power of Iceland’s waterfalls. Several travelers mention how stunning these spots are — a highlight.
Tour guides were GREAT, the ice cave took my breath away, one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen in my life.
Awesome tour! The landscapes we were able to see were breathtaking. We visited the waterfalls, the black sand beach and Katla cave. Everywhere you look is a nature’s masterpiece. Our guide and driver was Daniel and he was so kind and gentle. To visit the Katla cave we changed transport to a big track with huge wheels. It was such a fun ride! I do not remember the name of the guide (we went on Dec 2, hope this help you identify him), he was super kind and helpful, took really good care of all of us and even volunteer to take some nice pictures of us inside the cave. We loved the tour!
Our trip was amazing! The guide Beda is the best of the best! He’s knowledgeable, passionate, brave and very nice person! He drove us to the cave and back and made our interesting trip unforgettable. I’ll definitely come back with my friends and colleagues 😊 Maria. December 2025.
From there, it’s a scenic drive to Vik, where Reynisfjara black sand beach awaits. The beach’s striking basalt columns and roaring Atlantic waves make it a must-see. You’ll have about 40 minutes for photos and a quick walk along the shore. Many reviews mention the winds and untamed beauty of this spot, so dress accordingly.
The Off-Road Adventure to Katla Ice Cave
After the beach, the journey continues by super-jeep, an experience in itself. The off-road ride into the wilderness lasts about 40 minutes and is a hit among thrill-seekers. The rugged tracks and huge wheels add a sense of adventure, and guides often share tales about the Katla volcano and its history of eruptions — a fascinating element that adds context to the ice cave visit.
This is where the experience gets unique. You’ll be equipped with gear and safety instructions before heading up the glacier. The walk involves about 20 minutes on sandy terrain and 10 minutes on the glacier itself — a gentle hike, but it’s important to follow your guide’s instructions carefully, especially when handling crampons.
More Great Tours NearbyExploring Katla Ice Cave
The highlight for many is the Katla Ice Cave, located inside the Kötlujökull glacier — an icefall of the larger Mýrdalsjökull glacier. The cave is a natural marvel, with swirling blue ice and intricate formations. The guided tour inside lasts about an hour, and you’ll have opportunities for photos, marveling at the icy sculptures, and learning about glacial processes from your guide.
The basalt cliffs into the ocean and the black sand beach were awesome to see. Our ice cave guide Oihane “Ane” was great! Her talk about glaciers and the ice cave cycles was very informative . She handled the 4wd like a pro! The scenic beauty was amazing.
Excellent day trip, beautiful waterfalls and amazing experience at the ice cave. We visited the black sand beach where there was time for lunch
Our guide Jim took us to all the waterfalls and black sand beach and told us lots of interesting information about the places and Iceland. They were all absolutely stunning. it’s a long journey to Vik but the scenery is out of this world. For the ice cave Frederico was our guide and he did a fantastic job of showing us the amazing Katla ice cave and explaining the surrounding glacier. I also really enjoyed the off road drive to the cave.
While some reviews mention that the walk to the cave can be challenging for those with limited mobility or older travelers, guides are attentive and helpful, ensuring everyone stays safe. The cave itself is relatively small, so don’t expect vast chambers — but its beauty is undeniable.
Returning via Reynisfjara and Heading Back
After the ice cave exploration, the tour moves on to Reynisfjara, giving you a final chance to admire Iceland’s black sand beaches and basalt formations. You’ll have around 40 minutes here, plenty of time for a quick walk and pictures.
The drive back to Reykjavik takes approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes, with a brief stop in Hvolsvöllur for a quick break. By the time you return, you’ve covered an incredible range of landscapes and experiences.
What Travelers Are Saying

Reviewers consistently praise the guides — from their storytelling skills to their attentiveness and helpfulness. One traveler shares, “Our guide Beda is the best of the best,” emphasizing how guides make or break the experience. Others highlight the scenery, calling the waterfalls, beach, and glacier “breathtaking” and “impressive.”
I loved the variety of everything we saw. Hiking to the cave was my favorite.
We had such a great day. Our guide Karina was so entertaining and kept us engaged the whole day. Each stop was so beautiful and perfectly timed. Stunning waterfalls and black sand beaches. However, we do wish we knew the ice cave was very small and you’re only able to go in a little bit. But otherwise it was an incredible day! Definitely, good value.
I was on a Tour guided by Björn, he explained the surroundings very well. The tour was entertaining and fun. Björn is a nice and knowledgeable guy, you can talk to him about many things. The ice cave tour was done by Martin and this one as well was educational, fun and well done. Martin as well is a cool and knowledgeable guy. Both tours started on time. I really enjoyed both trips and would recommend!
Several mention the value for money, feeling that the combination of sights, guided hikes, and the off-road adventure justifies the price. One reviewer notes, “The trip was amazing. The scenery is out of this world,” and another calls it “the highlight of their trip.”
Some caution that the long day can be tiring, especially if you’re not used to a packed schedule. The walk to the ice cave, while generally manageable, might be difficult for very young children or those with mobility challenges. However, guides are attentive and willing to assist where needed.
Practical Tips Based on Reviews
- Bring warm clothing and hiking shoes — essential for comfort and safety.
- Since the walk involves some sandy and icy terrain, hiking boots are mandatory, but rentals are available.
- Pack snacks and water, as the stops are timed to maximize sightseeing, not dining.
- Be prepared for the possibility of rougher road conditions during the off-road ride — it’s part of the adventure, but it can be bumpy.
- The small group size (around 12 people) helps keep the experience intimate and flexible.
Is This Tour Worth It?

Absolutely, if you’re after a comprehensive day of Icelandic highlights paired with some adventure. It’s a well-organized trip that balances scenic sightseeing, cultural insights, and a rare glimpse into an ice cave — a true bucket-list experience. The guides’ expertise and the variety of stops make it stand out.
However, keep in mind that it’s a fairly long day, and some parts involve walking on uneven terrain. If you’re looking for a relaxed sightseeing tour, this might feel a bit intensive. But if you’re eager to see Iceland’s diverse landscapes in one go, this trip offers excellent value for that kind of full-day adventure.
Visiting the Katla Ice Cave was one of the absolute highlights of my trip to Iceland. The landscape on the way there is breathtaking and the cave itself is truly mesmerizing. What made the experience even more unforgettable was our tour guide, Gabby. He was amazing—funny, incredibly knowledgeable, and genuinely cared about everyone's safety and experience from start to finish. Gabby’s insights about the ever-changing nature of the ice caves added a whole new layer of appreciation. It's wild to think that the cave you see today won’t be quite the same tomorrow. If you're visiting Iceland, this tour is an absolute must. You won't see anything else like it.
For a day that was 90% rain, our guide Branimir, made it upbeat and fun. He allowed plenty of time at each of the waterfalls and the black sand beach we visited on the way to Vik. The guide for the ice caves, Hawk, was also excellent and offered a lot of insight into the ice caves and the area. The pace was steady, but not grueling, to climb up and back down with plenty of time in the caves. Hawk also took some amazing photos of individuals in different parts of the cave.
Amazing sights! And we had a great time! The bus was comfortable, modern and clean.
