Getting a chance to fish in the Arctic waters near Tromsø is a unique experience that many travelers look forward to. Although I haven’t personally been on this exact trip, I’ve gathered plenty of insights from real reviews and detailed descriptions to give you a solid sense of what you can expect.

If you’re after an authentic, laid-back fishing trip with great scenery and friendly guides, this could be just what you’re looking for.

Two things I really like about this experience are the emphasis on local, family-run hospitality and the chance to taste your own fresh catch right on the boat. It’s not just about catching fish—it’s about savoring the moment and enjoying the Arctic wilderness. The only thing to keep in mind is that the tour doesn’t include hotel transfers, so you’ll need to plan your transportation to the meeting point.

What Makes This Tour Stand Out?

The main draw is fishing in the Arctic currents of Kvaløystraumen or Ryøyastraumen—two spots renowned for their abundance of fish, thanks to powerful water streams that attract smaller fish and plankton, setting the stage for bigger catches. The guides use echo sounders to find the best spots, so you’re not just aimlessly casting lines. It’s a well-organized trip that balances fun, education, and the chance to get your hands dirty.

A hallmark of this experience is the family-run atmosphere. Many reviews praise the crew’s friendliness and attentiveness. They’re passionate about fishing and eager to make sure everyone, regardless of experience level, has a good shot at catching fish. As one reviewer put it, “The crew were very welcoming and lovely to be on the boat with,” which sets a welcoming tone for first-timers or those wary of cold weather adventures.

The Itinerary and What to Expect

The trip begins at Polar Adventures’ office, conveniently located on the front pier in Tromsø. After a brief safety briefing, everyone dons insulated body suits provided by the company—perfect for staying warm in the Arctic chill. The boat, called Capella, then departs towards the chosen fishing areas.

The journey typically takes around 50 minutes to reach the fishing zones, giving you a chance to enjoy the scenic transfer. During the ride, hot drinks, cookies, and sometimes fish soup are offered, helping everyone stay warm and comfortable. The guides are excellent at changing spots to optimize your chances, and many reviews mention how they go out of their way to ensure everyone catches fish, sometimes even extending the trip if needed.

Although we didn't catch any fish, we enjoyed the delicious fish that our fellow passengers had caught. The captain's dog is sooooo cute!

Amazing charter, I had paulo take me out with a full boat, super easy locations in the Bay Area, the group caught about 20-30 fish within the couple of hours we had. A few of the Arctic cod went well over 100cm. Tea,coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits on the boat They filleted and prepared the fish we caught and cooked it on the boat for us to try. Paulo and the captain were very polite and enthusiastic about how many fish we were catching. They offered for all of us to take some fillets home which I cooked up and it was great Definitely recommend

Our guide Roger was great, answered all the questions and told us a lot about fishing and life in the Arctic. We went to multiple spots to improve our chances and everyone caught something. Some of the fish we caught has been prepared for lunch in a simple but delicious meal.

Once at the fishing spots, you’ll be given a fishing rod and tackle, and the guides will give a quick demonstration if needed. The main goal? To catch as many fish as possible—mainly cod and other Arctic species. Several reviews highlight how successful people are, even complete beginners. “Everyone caught loads of fish,” one reviewer shares, “and we learnt about the different types.”

The Fish and the Food

One of the real highlights is the ability to taste your catch right on the boat. After fishing, the crew prepares your fish, often cooking it fresh for you to sample. Many travelers loved this part—the thrill of catching a fish, then savoring its flavor moments later. The reviews mention delicious fish soup and pan-fried catches, which elevate the experience beyond just fishing.

The guides also serve refreshments—hot chocolate, coffee, tea, and snacks—throughout the trip. This thoughtful touch keeps everyone energized and warm, especially important in the Arctic environment.
