Golden Circle & Snorkeling in Silfra From Reykjavík with Free Photos

Combine Iceland's Golden Circle with snorkeling between tectonic plates in Silfra. Includes guide, gear, photos & hot chocolate. 10 hours, $320.46.

5.0(571 reviews)From $320.46 per person

This tour checks two of Iceland’s biggest boxes in a single day—the iconic Golden Circle and the unforgettable experience of snorkeling in one of the world’s clearest bodies of water. We love how the operator, Troll Expeditions, has thoughtfully combined these experiences without making you feel rushed, and we’re impressed by the included amenities like professional photography and quality equipment that many competitors charge extra for.

The standout feature here is the snorkeling component. You’re not just visiting a famous geological site; you’re actually getting into the water between two tectonic plates in a drysuit, with certified dive guides ensuring your safety and comfort the entire time. It’s the kind of experience that stays with travelers long after they’ve returned home.

One consideration worth noting upfront: this tour requires a reasonable level of physical fitness and water comfort. You’ll need to be between 150-200 cm in height, weigh between 45-120 kilos, and be a comfortable swimmer. There are also medical requirements to review beforehand, so this isn’t an experience for everyone—but if you meet the criteria, it’s genuinely once-in-a-lifetime.

Great day with bucket list snorkel and waterfalls along golden circle and geyser. Also had an unplanned stop to pet / feed Icelandic ponies !.

This was a great small bus tour. The guide (Bjorn) was local and he entertained us with stories, and educated us about Iceland. He was great! We started off going to the waterfall. We had some time to get out of the bus and wonder around in the gift shop and 2 viewing areas. It was incredible! Next we stopped on the side of the road to see some Icelandic horses that were up against the fence and we got to pet them. Then we saw the geyser and stopped across the street for lunch. It was a perfect grab and go lunch that we could take along in the car. After that we went to go snorkel. It was cold, but not unbearable with the dry suit. We were in the water for around 40 mins I believe. It was so…

The Golden Circle tour portion was good, not great. Our "tour guide" was pretty much just a bus driver. Didn't tell us much about the destinations. Just drove us there, gave a little bit of advice on where to go, a tiny bit of background on what we were seeing and then dropped us off and told us to meet back at the bus at a certain time. Got to the snorkeling portion and that's where the craziness (fun?) started. Some advice: wear long johns underneath your clothes as you'll need to strip down in the back of a van to put on the dry and wet suits. The guides helped us get suited up (quite an ordeal) and then we waited a long time before it was our turn to snorkel the fissure. Was told…

This tour suits adventurous travelers who want to see Iceland’s most famous natural wonders while checking off a major bucket-list item in a single day. It works especially well for first-time visitors to Iceland who want to maximize their time and experience the country’s dramatic geology in a tangible way.

What You’re Actually Getting for $320.46

Golden Circle & Snorkeling in Silfra From Reykjavík with Free Photos - What Youre Actually Getting for $320.46

At roughly $320 per person, this represents solid value when you break down what’s included. You’re getting a full 10-hour day with professional transportation, a knowledgeable English-speaking guide, all snorkeling equipment and a drysuit (which typically rents separately for $50-80), certified dive instruction, professional photography with free digital downloads, and even hot chocolate and Icelandic chocolate afterward.

Many travelers booking Iceland tours separately pay $150-200 for the Golden Circle alone and another $150-200 for Silfra snorkeling. This tour bundles both experiences with the convenience of a single pickup and drop-off. You’re not paying extra for guides to accompany you through the snorkeling section—they’re included. The free GoPro photos are a nice touch that would otherwise cost extra through most tour operators.

The transportation logistics matter more than they might initially seem. Rather than coordinating your own rental car (which adds gas, potential road stress, and parking costs), you’re in a comfortable minibus with WiFi, and your driver handles all navigation. For travelers arriving jet-lagged or unfamiliar with Icelandic roads, this eliminates a significant source of travel stress.

Starting Your Morning: Early Pickup and Silfra First

You’ll be picked up starting at 8:00 AM from your designated bus stop (the operator notes this carefully in their confirmation, since downtown Reykjavik has traffic restrictions that prevent stops at all hotel entrances). The company recommends being ready 30 minutes after the official start time, allowing for the logistics of collecting other travelers.

The tour company has structured the day by visiting Silfra first, which several travelers noted as smart planning. Getting the snorkeling done in the morning means you’re fresh and the water conditions are often optimal. One reviewer mentioned that “there is less of a wait during the morning tours,” suggesting that the timing of your group matters for managing crowds at the popular snorkeling site.

The minibus picked us up on time and was very clean and comfortable. Our guide, Jon, was very knowledgeable and shared information throughout the tour. I felt we had plenty of time at each of the beautiful sites. Our snorkeling tour at Silfra was the highlight for me, as I had been wanting to do this for years! Our guides Vicky and Cecilia went over and above t make sure everyone was fitted in our suits properly and comfortable in the cold water. It was amazing!

Snorkeling in the crystal clear water between tectonic plates is truly awesome! Our guide (Anna) was great…and so adept & proficient fitting & assisting us into our dry suits as well as guiding us through the Silfra Rift. Seeing the waterfalls & geysers was icing on the cake. Beautiful Iceland Fire & Ice!

This was an amazing experience! They came and picked me up right at my hotel and took us all to snorkeling first. You will be freezing but it is completely worth it! Lilian our snorkeling guide was so patient and made sure everyone stayed together and was having fun! For my fellow travelers with braids or locs you will probably be a little more uncomfortable in the wetsuit but it is manageable but don’t get too big of braids and you should be fine. The next stops in the golden circle was breathtaking. It snowed so we got to see the golden circle covered in snow and it was soo pretty. Definitely Instagram worthy photos available at each stop. Our driver was so dope and really patient with u…

Silfra: Snorkeling Between Continents

This is the centerpiece of the tour. You'll change into your drysuit (which does take some time and requires stripping down, so reviewers suggest wearing long underwear underneath your regular clothes), and then you're guided into the Silfra Fissure—the narrow crack in the earth where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.

One experienced traveler described it well: "We were in the water for around 40 mins I believe. It was so clear and beautiful. The guide is with you and helping every step of the way." The visibility in Silfra is genuinely exceptional, with water so clear you can see the rock formations below with remarkable detail. You won't see much marine life—don't expect fish—but the geological formations and the clarity of the water make it feel otherworldly.

The guides receive particular praise in reviews. One traveler noted: "Vicky and Cecilia went over and above to make sure everyone was fitted in our suits properly and comfortable in the cold water." Another mentioned their guide "was so patient and made sure everyone stayed together and was having fun!" The guides are PADI-certified dive masters, meaning they're trained professionals handling your safety, not just volunteers.

The water temperature is genuinely cold—around 2°C (36°F)—but the drysuit keeps you warm and dry. Multiple reviewers confirmed this works: "It was cold, but not unbearable with the dry suit." One traveler who was skeptical beforehand reported: "I wasn't cold at all." The key is proper suit fitting and the thermal layers underneath.

After snorkeling, you'll get hot chocolate and Icelandic chocolate bars to warm up, a small touch that travelers consistently mention and appreciate.

Thingvellir National Park: Geology and History Combined

After changing back into your regular clothes, you'll visit Thingvellir (also written as Þingvellir), a UNESCO World Heritage site that's significant for both geological and historical reasons. This is where the continental plates visibly split the landscape, creating dramatic fissures and valleys. It's also where Iceland's first parliament, the Althing, was established in 930 AD.

One reviewer captured the experience well: "We got to see another smaller waterfall, and walk around a beautiful area that had some nice views of the lake and the faults/tectonic plate splitting." You'll have time to explore on your own pace, which several travelers appreciated. Your guide will give you an overview before letting you wander, so you understand what you're looking at without feeling herded through the site.

Gullfoss: Iceland's Most Dramatic Waterfall

Next comes Gullfoss, one of Iceland's most powerful and beautiful waterfalls. The water drops in two stages—first about 11 meters, then another 21 meters—into a narrow canyon below, creating a spectacular display of raw power. On clear days, you'll often see a rainbow in the mist.

Several reviewers mentioned this stop specifically. One noted: "We started off going to the waterfall. We had some time to get out of the bus and wonder around in the gift shop and 2 viewing areas. It was incredible!" The site has viewing platforms at different levels, so you can experience the waterfall from multiple perspectives. There's also a gift shop and café if you need to grab lunch or snacks.

Geysir Geothermal Area: Watching Nature's Power

After Gullfoss, you'll visit the Haukadalur Geothermal Field, home to the famous Geysir hot spring. While the original Great Geysir erupts infrequently now, the area has Strokkur, a geyser that erupts reliably every 5-10 minutes, shooting hot water 30-40 meters into the air. It's genuinely thrilling to witness—the ground rumbles, the water builds up, and then suddenly it explodes skyward.

The geothermal area also features colorful hot springs, steaming vents, and pools of varying temperatures. The landscape looks almost alien, with bright mineral deposits and constantly rising steam. One traveler's guide "shared information throughout the tour" about these geological features, helping visitors understand what they were seeing.

This is also where several reviewers mentioned having lunch. One noted: "Then we saw the geyser and stopped across the street for lunch. It was a perfect grab and go lunch that we could take along in the car." Lunch isn't included in the tour price, so you'll want to budget for food here or bring your own.

Unexpected Bonuses Along the Way

Several reviewers mentioned unplanned stops that added character to the tour. One traveler noted: "Also had an unplanned stop to pet / feed Icelandic ponies!" Another mentioned their guide "went out of his way to show us hidden local treasures like rye bread cooking on the beach and a crack running through a shopping complex." These moments—when a knowledgeable local guide spots something interesting—are part of what makes small-group tours special. Your experience will depend partly on your specific guide, but the company clearly hires people who know Iceland well and want to share it.

The Guide Experience: What Sets This Tour Apart

Golden Circle & Snorkeling in Silfra From Reykjavík with Free Photos - The Guide Experience: What Sets This Tour Apart

The quality of guides emerges as one of the most consistent themes in reviews. Travelers mention guides by name—Björn, Jon, Lilian, Kevin, Vicky, Anna, Cecilia—and describe them as "knowledgeable," "funny," "patient," and "professional." One reviewer summed it up: "Our guide, Haymir was fantastic. He was so engaging and funny, while also incredibly informative."

For the snorkeling portion specifically, you're working with PADI-certified dive masters. These aren't casual guides; they're trained professionals who handle water safety protocols and have experience managing groups in a challenging environment. The reviews consistently praise their attentiveness: "the guides have their own cameras and share the photos with everyone afterwards" and they "attended to each person individually making sure we were all suited and geared up."

The bus driver/guide dynamic works well in this tour's favor. You're not separated from your main guide during snorkeling; instead, you get specialized guides for that portion while your driver/guide handles the Golden Circle section. This division of labor means each guide can focus on their area of expertise.

Practical Logistics: Timing, Group Size, and Transportation

Golden Circle & Snorkeling in Silfra From Reykjavík with Free Photos - Practical Logistics: Timing, Group Size, and Transportation

The tour runs approximately 10 hours total. You'll be picked up around 8:00 AM and returned by approximately 6:00-6:30 PM, depending on traffic and how long stops take. This is a full day, but not an exhausting one—you're mostly sitting in a minibus between stops.

The group size maxes out at 18 travelers, which is genuinely small by tour standards. This matters because it means you're not competing with 40 other people for space at viewpoints or waiting in enormous lines to snorkel. One reviewer specifically mentioned: "The tour size was perfect—about 12 people. It was big enough where it felt like a group tour, but small enough to befriend everyone in the group."

The minibus itself gets consistent praise. Reviewers mention it being "very clean and comfortable" and note that "there were still empty seats in the bus which made the ride so peaceful!" The WiFi aboard is a practical touch—you can catch up on messages during driving segments.

What's Not Included (And Why It Matters)

Lunch is not included, though the tour structure gives you time to eat. You'll have time at Gullfoss (which has a café) and at the Geysir area (which also has food options). Budget roughly 2,000-3,000 ISK ($15-23) for a casual meal. Bringing your own snacks is also smart, especially if you have dietary preferences.

Optional branded merchandise is available—hats, gloves, and neck warmers with the Troll Expeditions logo—but these aren't necessary. You should bring your own warm layers and a windproof jacket. The drysuit is provided, but you're responsible for what you wear underneath it.

Pickup from Keflavík Airport or outside the greater capital area isn't available, so if you're staying in a remote location, you'll need to arrange alternative transportation to a pickup point.

Managing Expectations: What the Reviews Really Tell Us

Golden Circle & Snorkeling in Silfra From Reykjavík with Free Photos - Managing Expectations: What the Reviews Really Tell Us

The 4.9-star rating across 571 reviews is genuinely impressive, but the reviews themselves reveal more nuance than the overall number suggests. The overwhelming majority of travelers (541 out of 571 reviews are 5-star) found this tour exceptional. However, a handful of reviews note specific challenges worth understanding.

One reviewer who gave 4 stars mentioned: "The Golden Circle tour portion was good, not great. Our tour guide was pretty much just a bus driver." This suggests that if you're looking for deep historical and geological education, you might not get extensive narration at every stop—you'll have time to explore and ask questions, but it's not a lecture tour. The guide gives you context, then lets you experience it yourself.

Another 4-star review noted the photo quality: "The photos were...not good. Especially pictures of us in the water. I can't even identify myself in those." This is worth noting—the included photos are nice to have, but don't expect professional-quality portraits. They're action shots from underwater cameras, which by nature can be challenging to get perfect.

Several reviewers emphasized bringing a change of clothes: "wear long johns underneath your clothes as you'll need to strip down in the back of a van to put on the dry and wet suits." While the drysuit is designed to keep you dry, a few travelers experienced minor leakage, so having dry clothes available is smart planning.

One reviewer with a canceled flight had a poor experience with the cancellation policy: the company wouldn't reschedule their tour because they requested the change less than 24 hours before departure. This aligns with the stated policy—you get free cancellation up to 24 hours, but changes within that window aren't accepted. Plan accordingly if your travel dates are flexible.

The Value Proposition: Is This Worth Booking?

Golden Circle & Snorkeling in Silfra From Reykjavík with Free Photos - The Value Proposition: Is This Worth Booking?

If you're visiting Iceland for the first time and want to see the country's most famous natural attractions while checking off a major adventure activity, this tour delivers genuine value. You're getting professional guides, quality equipment, reliable transportation, and the chance to experience something legitimately unique—snorkeling between tectonic plates.

The $320 price point represents fair value compared to booking these experiences separately. You're paying for convenience (single pickup and drop-off), safety (certified guides and proper equipment), and the social element of a small group tour. You're also getting the photographs, which adds tangible value.

This isn't the cheapest option you'll find—some operators offer Golden Circle tours for $100-150—but you're paying for the addition of Silfra snorkeling, which alone typically costs $150-200 elsewhere. The inclusion of professional photography, hot chocolate, quality equipment, and small-group size justifies the price.

The tour works best for travelers who are physically fit, comfortable in water, and genuinely excited about the snorkeling component. If you're only interested in the Golden Circle and see snorkeling as a tacked-on extra, you might prefer a dedicated Golden Circle tour. But if Silfra snorkeling is something you've wanted to do, this tour is an efficient way to combine it with Iceland's most famous sites.
