If you’re exploring Latvia and want a meaningful day trip that blends history, culture, and a dash of spirituality, this group day tour from Riga to the Hill of Crosses might just be what you’re after. We haven’t taken this exact trip ourselves, but after reading through loads of reviews and details, it’s clear that many travelers find it a compelling, well-organized experience.

What stands out? First, the small-group setting really appeals—only up to eight people—which helps keep the atmosphere intimate and allow for more personalized attention. Second, the comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle makes the long drive manageable, especially since the total duration is about five hours.

However, keep in mind that the drive is a bit lengthy, so if you’re not a fan of long road trips, that’s something to consider.

RECOMMEND! It was exactly as promised. A comfortable, small-group drive through the lush green countryside of Latvia and Lithuania; an interesting backgrounder and history lesson upon arrival; a solemn and sobering pilgrimage through the site to the monastery; a border stop for pictures; a slow drive through Jelgava with its Soviet style architecture and a stop at its ornate Orthodox Church with more historic commentary. We had a full day but not an exhausting one and there was still plenty of time for more sightseeing in Riga!

Starting Point and Duration

The tour kicks off at Latvieu Strlnieku Laukums 3 in Riga bright and early at 9:00 am. From there, you board a private minivan or business class 4WD—whichever option is chosen, the ride promises to be smooth and comfortable. The total trip lasts about five hours, which includes a few stops along the way.

The trip is designed to be straightforward: a relatively short drive to the border, a quick stop for photos if you wish, and then onward to the Hill of Crosses. The small group size means you’re not crammed in, and your guide can be attentive, offering live commentary throughout the journey.

Border Stop and Photos

One of the small but thoughtful touches is the optional photo stop at the Latvia-Lithuania border. This provides a chance to snap some shots and stretch your legs. Several reviews mention this as a highlight, especially since the border crossing is part of the experience—adding a bit of international flavor to your day.

Exploring the Hill of Crosses

The main event is the one-hour free time at the Hill of Crosses. Here, you’ll walk around a site packed with thousands of crosses, some simple, others elaborate, all left by pilgrims and visitors over decades.

The site itself is more of a mount than a hill, as one guide warned, but that doesn’t diminish its impact. Many travelers find it striking to see the sheer number of crosses—some are towering, some modest—and feel the weight of the stories and hopes behind each one. The site is free to explore at your own pace, so if you want to spend more time praying, taking photos, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, you’re free to do so.

It was very enjoyable. It’s quite a long drive in a minivan but it’s ok. Our tour guide Tomas was very friendly and informative. We also stopped at the border and one other stop to look at the cathedral- that was a nice extra. The hill is really a mount not a hill but out guide warned us. Well worth the trip.

Tomas was a friendly guide and was interesting to chat to. The group was small which was nice, and he included toilet/snack buying breaks on the trip and stopped off at the Latvia Lithuania border to take photos, as well as a cool surprise stop on the way home. At the hill of crosses, he explained a bit about it then let us walk around by ourselves for an hour. It was very moving and interesting. It was very convenient to visit from Riga (compared to from within Lithuania) and I still had the rest of the afternoon left once the tour ended. I met a couple of other travellers on the tour and we spent the rest of the day together 🙂 I am so glad i found this tour for such a good price.
